Bring League of Linux to life

Good evening, Riot Games and Linux Gamers!

We the Linux community hardly struggle with the lack of your game on the operating system we use. While you can support Windows as it's one mainstream OS, you also decided to add Mac support. Mac OS is based off UNIX, which is the base of Linux. I don't see why wouldn't you release a Linux version of the game when you don't want WINE to be supported. At least a 64-bit version? I know, 32-bit users will struggle but nowadays there are good and cheap 64-bit CPUs for like $20 to $30 which can do the trick to play League of Legends.

I mean Riot Games, look at yourselves. You are the most played game, right? Yeah, it's right, not Fortnite yet, don't worry. We will exclude Tetris and Super Mario, for the reasons that nobody almost plays there, except if we get nostalgic. However, these both are available for Linux. That's okay, they were originally made for Linux, but then made for Mac and Windows as well.

Apart of this, let's make you sound fun to your fellow community, how does that sound?

To me this sounds as fun as to do it. Starting off with Dota 2. I want you to open up this link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/570/Dota_2/

Did you have a look at the page? You haven't? Okay, then please go and check Supported Operating systems. What do I see here? Isn't that Linux? Weren't Valve the company you were fighting against? Seems they won this one. ;)

Thumbs up for you Riot Games!

That's not enough? Want some more? There you have it.

By saying League and Linux... hmmm.. the first thing that comes to mind is something with a more unique gameplay. Even Dunkey baited many of us with a thumbnail of League of Legends. Correct, that's Rocket League: https://store.steampowered.com/app/252950/Rocket_League/

What do I see again? Linux support.

You are doing great, Riot Games! Lolz!

Let's give you more pain! BRING DA PAIN!

Okay, the pain has come. Now comes the trouble.

RUSH B CYKA BLYAT IDI NAHUY! https://store.steampowered.com/app/730/CounterStrike_Global_Offensive/

Like okay, not even similar to League, yet played almost as much as League of Legends. It's like... 3rd place worldwide? The biggest Steam game.

Top Played Games Ranking, FYI

  1. League of Legends [no support, even for WINE]
  2. Fortnite [supports WINE]
  3. Counter Strike: Global Offensive [native Linux support]
  4. Overwatch [supports WINE, but it's a bit harder to setup and it's a bit choppy]
  5. Dota 2 [native Linux support]
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops II [supports WINE, but the game is heavier itself]
  7. Garry's Mod (surprise, yep, it's a very well-known and played game) [Another surprise - native Linux support]
  8. Warframe (among the free to play games, this one is a top of the tops) [only Windows, but has WINE support, which works very well, tested myself]
  9. Minecraft (didn't expect this one coming?) [native Linux support, though it's written in Java Shitcode® for every OS, but the Linux ver can run on both Win and Mac as well]
  10. PUBG (kinda debatable if it's 10th or 9th, but IDC, I don't play this shit) [Windows only, supports WINE]

I am tired of making this list larger. Also, just to mention, Linux can look 50 times better than Windows.

Windows 10: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fa/Windows_10_1803.png Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE): https://i.imgur.com/R8Hz1NB.jpg [my laptop, yeah, don't watch the 32 GB RAM, Riot Games, you don't even have that much money to spend on just supporting Linux]

Also, in Windows, the default screenshot thing is Prnt Scr as well as in Linux, but there you can only capture the entire screen and you need to go to Paint and cut it there. But Linux on the other side has a built in system tool, that can even upload to imgur like I did. On Windows, I need to download their tool or use ShareX. Another reason why I won't install Windows again.

Also, Linux is free of any things like... paid licenses. And wait a minute, could you ask your technicians and programmers what OS do your server machines use? That's correct - a server edition of Linux, could be either Debian or Ubuntu. CentOS is dead, but can be that too.

If you use Windows Server, then I'd kindly ask you to change to Debian Server 9.0 if you respect yourselves and your company at least a little, as well as us - your community, which gave you all the money you have now. Wasn't the description of League of Legends that it's a community-made game, that we decide what happens, did that ever happen? No, not at all! Riot Games - just counting money and are mean to release some miserable $50,000 to implement Linux native support. But you earn over $100,000,000 per month, and I am being a realist.

Also, again change to Debian Server 9.0 if you are not on it, the lags and the disconnect issues will stop. Bugs maybe not, but just hire more and new programmers. If you are already on Linux, then just change programmers, they are your problem.

Listen, as much as I like your game and don't want to leave it, but you are being mean and you don't even allow us WINE support, my laptop would handle it perfectly, then I have no other choice than saying: Bye, I am done with League of Legends, because Riot Games ruined my dreams.

Best of luck in life, Riot Games

I'm all for Linux getting its own version, but did you just say Tetris and Mario were made for Linux and then ported?

Mario is a console franchise and Tetris was on Mac+PC before Linux was even made…

linux is the future.

in a few years ARM and RISC will be back as respected industry work horses.

even microsoft is preparing for this.

I honestly thought Riot announced better Linux support time ago. But since i recently changed Windows to Linux again i feel the lack of working LoL client.

Riot show other game companies that u care about Linux users! There are hundreds of us and there will be more if u will make native client.

Sry for my Elnglish, cheers from EU ;)

Offcourse I voted for a linux version, but some love to a wine version would be a good start.

Now I have to play on a medicore mba, while my desktop with linuxmint is wishing for games.

You don't need to crack windows. You can literally just download it from the microsoft website, never activate it and keep using it forever. Just like WinRAR lmao

Hurry up Riot. I want to start playing again, but waiting on a Linux compiled version.

momokrono2/5/2019, 8:39:45 PM2 votes

it's true that we linux users are a small piece of the cake, but i honestly think that a lot of players are now playing on windows just because there's not a native client. If and when it will be released that same piece of the cake will become waaay bigger. Also i think that supporting only one distro is more than enough, because the community will work to make a version for each flavour, drastically reducing riot's work. And I don't understand why every time there's some windows fanboy telling us to change os, we are happy with our choice, and this is all that matters. If you're happy with yours I'm happy for you, but leave us in peace. hashtag imwaitingforalinuxversionsinceseason3

I am a Linux user too. I'm using an HP laptop, on which i had Windows 7 and it could run League Of Legends, but it was slow and laggy. I am using Lubuntu (it's exactly like Linux, based on Ubuntu,a lighter version) on this laptop for 2 or 3 months and I am trying to get used to it. The problem is that LoL doesn't support Linux and "PlayOnLinux" is quite unreliable. I play League of Legends from season 4 and I really love this game, playing with friends and alone sometimes. If you look at the votes, there are 27 votes on the first option, which is for Riot Games to make League of Legends Linux accessible. I can't understand why so many people believe it shouldn't happen, because the majority of "Linux Players" isn't big. Not everyone can afford an amazing PC to use Windows 10.

Although I'm not good enough at the game to be a decent streamer, I am still a content creator. I've made a discord bot which uses the riot api to help out and encourage of the Corki mains discord server to play the game more, and have made plenty of websites and media as part of my projects.

I develop my software on a linux PC I deploy my software onto linux servers I'd like to go back to playing League of Legends on my Linux PC

OP said something about Linux letting you make it look better than windows. I agree, and heres my contribution to the LoL-linux eyecandy ;) https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dvtate/dvtate.github.io/master/dls/gnome-shell-screenshot-FAXKMZ.png

Why would Riot bend over backwards to support Linux when Linux's playerbase is a marginal percentage?

RXT KostWarCZE3/1/2019, 9:26:38 PM1 votes

I dunno how sane is porting league of legends on linux..

  • afaik the game is written in C++ so porting it should not be a problem
  • Launcher works on wine no problem so that part can be WINEed in the worst case scenario.
  • I suppose that anti-cheat is a problem, if league of legends would be ported to linux there would probably be more scripters, bot-nets to generate smurf accounts or something SHTF that disables server-side since linux has more options that can be abused.. In theory making it OSS ? Assuming that it's written in C++ there should be a lots of developers contributing to it and make it more effective.

What about wine-specific improvements?

  • Gallium9 that based on my test results makes the game run more effective.
  • like using dgvoodoo to get DXVK on directx9 application? (not verified)

Current wine vs native performance is ~120% for wine (based on my test results) and no microfreezes (that are present on some windows systems due telemetry, etc..) will that be sacrificed?

I have always used Ubuntu(linux) as my main OS. Because of my studies i had to switch to windows at some point because of the lacks of compatibility from some software. But right now if it wasn't for lol i would switch to linux in a blink of an eye on my personal desktop (because my work station is, of course, linux based). I used to play lol on linux before playing it on windows and i can say that it suffers from input lag, some bugs(some unresponsive keys for example) and at the time some driver compatibility issues. I WOULD LOVE to get a linux version of lol. Please make it real! [sg-soraka]

Misinformed OS-bashing won't magically make it financially worthwhile to support LoL on an OS that very few people use, and even fewer for gaming.

albertstephan8/2/2019, 1:09:44 AM1 votes

Mac is not Linux,is a derivative of BSD,just for you to know. I know LOL use DirectX But I am shure if they invest a little bit in Linux they can make an amazing native support, and that can help them on the long run. Riot can make special Linux Distro for their championship, they can come and support the OS as every big company does right now. Maybe they will realize that Belder is becoming SO BIG,than even Epic games and Ubisoft supports them. Blender works AMAZING with Linux. The sad story of Riot games is that they have a children fanbase (compared with Dota2) and these children don't know how to install Linux, even thou Ubuntu is the easiest OS to install on the planet right now.5 minutes and I am on the web.

Well I doubt that after 10 years, they will even try. But I am one of those guys who has to keep using windows because league doesn't work on linux. So upvoted for you my friend. Sucks that after so many years they still don't give a damn about the Linux community.

A patch was found for wine to get League running again, just to let you know. It's probably officially released soon..

Here is also a description how to get it working for now.

I am a Windows 10 user, I think a fair few people are looking to leave Microsoft behind since Windows 10 was released, random restarts (updates), data mining etc. League is one of only a handful of software keeping a windows install on my machine. I think there may be a lot of Windows users in this position in the coming years, probably they just haven't been 'motivated' enough by windows to force a move yet. +1 for a linux version.

ridderhoff7/26/2018, 3:16:35 AM1 votes

Using dota2 as an example is unfair. Valve uses tools so that their software is built to be cross platform whereas riot builds everything in-house (afaik). I think riot making a native Linux client is completely manageable even if the actual "League of Legends.exe" game gets run via wine. Honestly I don't really care if riot makes a custom client I just want be able to play League next week when I start college and the only computer I'll have is my Linux laptop.
