Correct me if I'm wrong, but Zyra was designed to go mid, and just got nerfed when she found too much success as a support. Kinda like what happened to Malzahar.

Mostly do to supports usually having high cc capabilities, shields and other things. Can still play Zyra mid, tahm top and etc.

Riot said they want to remove enchanter from mid lane because of their reliable defense needed as support they hard counter assasin and make the most interactive lane non interactif in mid lane. They pretty much already does that in bot lane but it look like want to keep it for bot lane only, I can't tell you more about their motivations.
