Unpopular Opinion: The Boards/Community SUCKS at champ design
So before Illaoi came out, Idk how many of you remember, but there was clamoring on the boards about there being too much cc in the game. There were threads coming out about how it'd be great to get some more cc lacking tanky dudes like Garen. I'm not saying "Riot made Illaoi solely because of the boards", but I am saying that on-the-boards whining about cc preluded Illaoi's release. Turns out that splitting a tanky champ's power budget between damage dealt and cc serves as a decent balancing point, and without it Illaoi teeters on just doing way too much damage or not doing enough to be useful. When she was decently strong everyone hated her because she'd tentacle slap your life away, so now she's been nerfed to being more of an afterthought on the rift.
So we get to the point where mages in bot lane were getting to an all time high, right? And people were saying shit like "I WISH SUPPORTS WOULD DO NO DAMAGE LIKE JANNA", "SUPPORTS SHOULD HAVE THEIR OWN STAT THAT DOESN'T GIVE DAMAGE", and "REAL SUPPORTS DO 50 DAMAGE TOPS" and crap like that. And I made threads stating that if Riot were to make a support that has no damage potential, they're going to be garbage because others have damage AND enough utility to exist in bot lane. In other words,
assuming we aren't making a Janna 2.0 where
the champ is so doubled down into defense that it's
ridiculous, making a champ that only provides utility with no damage potential would be horrible for that champ.
Regardless, since I have no idea what I'M saying, the QQ continues and Riot eventually releases Rakan. Rakan is a support with basically 0 damage dealing potential, so where he would actually hurt people, Rakan just "moves around people". He replaces pain with dashes while sporting 2 forms of multi-target/aoe hard cc, a heal (although unreliable), and a poking spell. The result?

He gets his lunch money stolen and sand kicked in his face in a ton of lanes, but he can't do anything about it. Later on, he scales into doing things, but there's supports out there that are already pretty good late game without suffering THIS BAD early on. This is basically repeating what we did with Taric, but no one gives a damn because it's the support role and supports don't get to be ANYTHING in this game apparently.
So lemme spell this out one more time: Unless we want supports that get clean outclassed by mages in the bot lane, or supports that are as annoying to people as Lulu is right now, or Soraka was before her nerf spree, denying supports of any damage dealing potential IS A BAD FUCKING IDEA.
