Someone told me Flash is mandatory.

Now, one of two statements are true. Either everyone has been fed garbage and are unnecessarily shoehorning themselves into a narrow way of thinking, using Flash to bail them out of every mistake instead of learning to use everything the game has to offer... or League is poorly designed. If the game is designed to support Flash as a mandatory spell - and I'm inclined to believe this, given the new Hexflash situation - something is wrong.

Games are about having fun. Part of having fun means trying all kinds of things and finding builds no one else has discovered. If Flash is mandatory, that's a choice that's decided for you by the game, which negates fun factor. A further question could be asked: if Flash is mandatory, why not bake it into every player's kit like Recall? Give everyone two summoners plus a slightly tweaked Flash.

Personally, I enjoy the tense moments where you've made a mistake and now you have to try and salvage it. Flash seems pointless to me, as a competitive person. It feels like a newbie crutch. "Oops, that was a dumb decision. No problem, Flash over the wall and you're gone! Let's pretend that didn't happen." I feel like it's much more engaging to have to measure every decision you make when you think about going in. To have to watch the jungle and be aware of potential ganks.

Flash can be used proactively, sure. It can be used for early dives, to set up great skillshot chains, and so on. For players who like to do that, and are good at it, Flash is a great choice. But the operative word is choice, and that's precisely what it should be.

I get shredded for running Cleanse, and to be fair, the reason I'm getting ripped for a mediocre lifetime KDA all the time is probably because I'm the sole player in the game who literally never takes Flash. But look, I own that. I'm a mediocre player, so my KDA is mediocre. I have no problem with that, and no one else should either. If you're low Bronze, whatever, someone has to be there. That doesn't mean you have to be ready to Flash out of every mistake. How can you learn from mistakes you have a do-over for?

But let's take Cleanse. No one ever runs that. Ever. Obviously, because Flash is decided and there are many other arguably more useful spells. But when you really look at it, Cleanse is more useful overall. It can negate easy Ignite kills, blow off CC for both offensive and defensive purposes, keep you rolling when a slow would make it impossible for you to safely initiate... It's extremely useful, and not just in the early game. Flash seems to become less potent later on when everyone's more mobile and you can get dropped with one well-placed Nidalee spear or Gangplank ult. Cleanse, however, stays as useful at 40 minutes as it was in the first minute.

So which is it, Riot? Is Flash really mandatory, or are people just misled by popular opinion? If it's the former, that's on you. Make some changes. If it's the latter, people need to start really digging into their games and thinking laterally. They'll have a lot more fun.

Flash isn't mandatory, per se.

But the Spell is so much stronger than the alternative in 99% of the cases as opposed to the other mobility spell (Unless you're a certain centaur or so). True, you can forego it but that means that you're handicaping yourself to only having the Champion's innate mobility. You are assuming that you don't need Flash to bail you out of mistakes, but you WILL make mistakes.

Flash is mandatory in some matchups. A lot of the game is unfortunately balanced around champions having access to flash.

Wow that is a wall of text. I think flash is useful, but it has a 5 min cooldown. The key is to take something that isn't flash and playing as if flash is on cooldown.

Flash is mandatory and it has been due to difficulty balancing immobile champions. It's not poor design, but rather 'okay' design that's difficult to turn into great design. Immobile champions need the mobility to compete with mobile champions, mobile champions value the extra effective range as they tend to be short ranged.

Your entire point about cleanse being useful is rendered moot by the fact a decent player always predicts an ignite, nidalee spear, gangplank ult, or CC before it is cast and simply flashes out of range. The advantages cleanse give aren't enough to make it worth taking over flash, but I do admit there are a few minor upsides.

or League is poorly designed.

What you’re looking at when you look at Flash today is a heavily nerfed version of Flash. In earlier seasons, it was quite obvious that Flash was the best summoner spell by far. Eventually Riot just gave up and “accepted” the fact Flash is the most powerful summoner spell in the game and that it will almost always be mandatory, and thus a whole lot of the game, champions and the map itself, is balanced around the use of Flash. Sure there are some champions that would prefer other spells like Shaco, Singed, and Hecarim (personally I take Ghost. instead of Flash on Trundle and Yorick) but one is undeniably handicapping themselves and the team if they don’t take Flash on most other champions. Flash is the only spell that has equally powerful offensive and defensive uses.

League can be well designed around a necessary summoner spell.

Sure, if it's baked into the kit as a feature. But it's not a feature. It's an option. If you've made a game where a specific optional choice is mandatory, you've done something wrong.

Something wrong. As in one single thing. Honestly not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

You don't get more "grand scheme" than runes in League. They affect every champion in every game. There is a single rune that requires a summoner spell, and guess which one it requires? I could fire off at least five interesting and meaningful Inspiration runes that would be useful regardless of what summoner spells you're equipped with right off the top of my head. Yet Riot took up a slot with a rune you need Flash to use. That's looking like poor game design affecting the macro scale to me.

That's why I don't play most of those champions. Sejuani can get out of tough spots just fine and long as you use her Q wisely, though, and Braum can make good use of his W to bail when he needs to. The rest of these champions don't really align with my playstyle.

I'm gonna go play Sejuani without Flash now.
