"What are you guys' thoughts on Sona's current state as a whole?"

I haven't made a Sona-related thread in a long time. There was a time where I used to make these big, page long essays like once every few months, complaining about the champion, and I'd drop them on here. Eventually, though, I realized that I wasn't going to be taken seriously so I said "fuck it" and stopped talking about her. She's still my favorite champion, but she's a whole can of worms that's been festering since a rework from a long time ago that no one wants to really put the backbone that's required to deal with because it'd require them going through a horde of Sona fans that probably wouldn't appreciate any changes to anything about any individual thing about her...much like what happened to the Karma project (and with that said, I hope I never see someone complain about Karma's kit again).

However, I've had a shower thought or two about this for a while now: Sona's position in this game is absolutely lop-sided. We're at a point where we have to ask if this is acceptable or not.

Like, we're at a point where Sona's scaling is so strong, but her ability to support others is so weak, that when people play this game at the highest tier of play, utilizing champions to the best of their abilities...she's a bot lane carry. It's something I've said for ages, now. How is it that, during the coin + Ardent meta, Sona was useless (0 W : 1 L for the entirety of worlds. In comparison, Janna and Lulu had almost 100% presence). It was literally a meta where the marksman took Relic Shield and the support took gold gen runes and both sides would try to get Censer in like 9 minutes. Even in a meta where Sona was supposed to have gold shoveled into her bank account by the person she was supporting, she was still totally useless. Why? Cause her kit doesn't support in modern day League. When I talked to people on the Sona mains channel, they said "Don't worry, Chip, it's just not her meta." I was like "There's no other meta where she'd be spoon fed gold like this as the support. If this isn't her meta, then there IS NO META."

Well, I was wrong, but in the weirdest way possible. Turns out you just gotta give her even more gold and even more protection, and that's accomplished by making her the bot lane carry.

Sona's whole kit just doesn't support other people. It literally drags teams to the finish line behind the safety of near perma-shielding once she lands items...almost like the polar opposite of a damage carry (a healing/shielding hyper carry). At this point, we gotta ask ourselves if Sona's a support or a carry pick. As it stands, we can look at her two ways:

  • A carry that can't farm because she has no wave clear, so fix that and solidify her role as a carry.

  • A team-wide support that can't peel anyone or enable any real plays without flash and/or ult, so FINALLY put some backbone into fixing that because this has been a problem for years and no one's cared since.

There's the possibility where I'm wrong about all this and every adores the fact that Sona's a bot lane hyper carry enchanter that shield/heals her way to victory while 1-shotting anyone that gets in 550 range of her that we happen to play as a support because we're not used to the idea of an enchanter being a better bot lane carry than most of the bot lane cast, but this is me earnestly asking the community if that's the case or not.

Shout out to Daedric Etwhal for the thread title, btw.

Sona is OP. Her win rate is insane but Riot's new balancing philosophy sucks.

She's been like this for ages. This isn't "new" at all.

Well she is picked a lot in pro and not even with taric. I guess riot will do something now.

(anyone saw patric's sona in LEC? xD that shit is so fucked up)

I say nerf that bitch to the ground. One of the champs with the least skill required.

1 Skillshot every 2 minutes + aoe mindless heals+shields+speedups.

Its always funny to me to see assassins dive the Sona first every time once she turns on.

And yet whenever they balance her, they gut her early game and reinforce her late game instead of doing the exact opposite.

Like look at her E, 10% MS at all ranks. It's pathetic. Late game though? Ridiculous amounts of teamwide spammable ms due to the AP scaling.

Almost every support is balanced behind the thought that they scale linearly while being extra good early. Sona? Pathetic early with ridiculous scaling.

Dead Anime Dad8 votes

Uninteractive, needs special balancing in Aram otherwise she's a free win. She should probably be reworked so someone playing her isn't the same as putting a brick on your key board. So it's not so great.

Unbelievably OP why else would she have -15% damage -18% healing -18% shielding and + 15% damage taken on aram.

You know there's more to the topic than "She's op" or "She's op just look at ARAM", right?

In fact, I don't even think I made a single statement asking if anyone thought she was "strong or weak" in this entire thread. Specifically, I was talking about the nature of her interactions in game as a hyper scaling shield dispenser and whether people like that game play or not.

They calling her OP because of her win rate and Sona/Taric thing. They don’t even know about her having a low pick rate and most people who playing her are her main or OTP.

Seriously if Sona mains abandon her or her popular would be as high as thresh, then her win rate would drop below 50%

Sona counters Yuumi because Sona keeps up with Yuumi's early game and outscales the shit out of Yuumi later. You literally are spreading false information.

To think ANYONE out-shields Sona is actually mind boggling. Sona shields five people and heals two every four seconds at 45% cdr. Who's out-sustaining her?

If you're talking about 50 minute games, maybe.

In actual games it is how I said, I'm not "spreading false information". Sona just doesn't have to land her Qs, that's her actual advantage.

Anyway, just check by yourself, whenever you're gonna face a competent Yuumi. In real games, not hypothetical neverending ones.

Are you joking? I do this all the time. You don't need 50 minutes to get enough points in W to out-shield Yuumi. Rank 1 W out-shields almost everyone in the game since it shields more people. The only person that can even attempt to compete is Lux since she ALSO has an aoe shield. Sona's abilities are lower cd, effect more people, and scale harder off of stats. She also has a stun instead of a delayed root.

Actually do some math and tell me who's out-sustaining Sona. I'm waiting.

I just looked up sona and she's the 46th most popular champ in the game. None of the sites I looked at had her in the top 10 most popular supports.

Also, according to op.gg she only really gets a good winrate if games go after 25 minutes. Before then she's only got a 46% win rate.

And they dont even play against her for year :D just bandwagon, pros pulls cheese strat and now she is hot garbage utteraly broken hypercarry despite constant nerfing of support. Ofc players opt for full damage sona, same as other supports if support build is almost unviable. Whole supporting degraded to "more damage" or "cc bot", there is something broken in supporting and people blindly asking for nerfs should know that they can get rid of sona but her place will take something more obnoxious and they will cry is for example velkoz become staple supp.

Overtuned and has a boring kit that isn't very fun to play as, with, or against. Riot should shift her power by giving her (weaker versions of) the abilities she could unlock during the Onslaught minigame. She should play songs by using her abilities in specific orders which activate her special abilities. Like QWE activates a different effect than EQW.

Onslaught Sona was dope as hell, do hope that if they revisit her, they go back to that for ideas.

Hemulen Magi1 votes

Yeah, it could be sweet and make her a lot more interesting. Here's the basic concept:

(P) Composer Sona's Q, W, and E all have a shared cooldown which starts at 6 seconds. The second, third, and fourth rank-ups in each of Q, W, or E reduces this shared cooldown by 0.5 seconds. Repeating the same ability in a row will grant the 'repetitive' debuff. Each stack of 'repetitive' will multiplicatively diminish effects from further repeated casts of that ability by 35% and increase its mana cost by 35%, stacking up to 5 times. Casting a different ability will remove all stacks of 'repetitive'.

Playing certain sequences of abilities will activate bonus effects [causing a distinct audio snippet to play]. Pausing for more than 5 between ability casts will cancel the sequence. R counts as a wildcard which can replace any other note to complete any of the sequences below.

E Q Q Boisterous Sona's next basic attack deals AOE magic damage

Q W W Clutch Grants a shield to the last ally healed by Aria of Perseverance

W E W Benediction Aria of Perseverance heals one extra ally.

Q W E Rouse Empowers Nearby Allies to Deal Bonus Damage

W W Q E W W Lullaby of the Oasis [similar to Arabesque by Debussy] Aria of Perseverance pulses for several seconds, healing nearby allies and restoring a very small amount of mana.

E W E Q E E Rise of the Typhoon [inspring song like Ride of the Valkyries] Song of Celerity lasts bonus time, deflects some damage from incoming ranged attacks, and grants Tenacity to Sona.

Q Q E W Q Q Ode to Destruction [dramatic song like O Fortuna] Hymn of Valor pulses, dealing damage over time in an area of effect surrounding Sona.

Note: You can chain together sequences to achieve multiple effects like (Q [W W) {R E W} W] (Clutch) [Lullaby of the Oasis] {Benediction}

Edit: Decided to make a separate thread for this because I like the concept. https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/skin-champion-concepts/0KlpvWJT-sona-rework-concept-based-on-odyssey-onslaught-augment-effects

Sona right now is some kind of hyper carry without wave clear instead of a true support.

Support usually have a very strong kit with less scaling so they can protect their carrier without depend on items, Sona is the opposite of that. Her base stats and kits have low numbers so you have to stack AP on her to make them effective, therefore she need protection (or abandon objects, carriers) until her power online, otherwise she would die with them.

Being a Sona main, I’m not a fan of her weak early game because We will spend most of our time here and mid game is when the game usually end.

Would be nice if Riot could switch some of her end game power to her early game. I’m still salty about The rune reforged update, when Riot nerf Sona Q because it synergy well with Aery, then nerf Aery without revert her Q nerf, I was like “wtf the damage is laughable how could they nerf it even more?”

My god you hit the nail on the head so damn hard i've got splinters and we don't even live in the same country.

I'm a 900k Sona mastery silver/gold casual player. I've played her basically since i started league in the beginning of S3 for her simplicity and musical theme, and ever since her rework, i've gradually changed from trying to get that oneshot combo to just stacking every little bit of AP, CDR and mana i can just so that i can become an utterly unstoppable buff machine.

By the way, something i want to point out, a lot of people find her healing outrageous, but her AP-scaled E is absolutely bonkers and a large part of the reason she's so strong late, even though it's overlooked. It starts from a measly 11-14%, but adds 6% for every 100 AP. That's 50% bonus MS permanently on all her team at 600 AP, which isn't even the true late game.

That said; I love that carry-the-team playstyle, but i do think her early game is too painful and would rather see her obscene endgame brought back in line a bit to give her a somewhat more consistent, solid early game.

Personally my favorite part of her kit is in choosing the right power cord. So, I'm infavor of lowering her healling, shilding, and auras. Maybe they could turn her q into some sort of auto reset csing tool like talia q instead of that auto targeting garbage.

Feel Apathy1 votes

I don't like her.

U can't really play her as a carry in soloQ and apparently it's a big deal in the LCS.

A support that needs too much gold just won't work in this game.

Sona has been a hypercarry ever since her rework. She can also be a support while doing this; the fact she's not specifically focused on the laning phase doesn't mean she's not a support. I don't know how you can call her a "healing/shielding carry" and at the same time say "her ability to support others is nonexistent". That's just a straight up contradiction. But there is arguably a problem when the point of supports going botlane is that they're meant to help someone who is weak early but scales well. So if both of you are like that, then you're basically giving up lane for an amazing lategame.

Whether this is a problem is debatable, though. For example, you could see her paired with lane bullies where the two cover each other's weaknesses. If the ADC can keep lane priority without as much support, but they have a relatively weak lategame, they don't need a strong support early and Sona makes up for their lategame handily. Personally, I like her as a hypercarry support; it's a unique niche, and it'd be a shame for it to go away in its entirety. But it also often feels like she has very little impact early on. However, she's a bit like Caitlyn where, if she's too strong, she completely takes over. If Sona's early game isn't garbage, she's a total monster, so it's a question of how to reign in her lategame and buff her early. To me, it seems her Ult's passive is the biggest issue in that regard; as long as that stays, you can't safely nerf her lategame just through values alone.

Hmmm.. what you think of as a problem here I'm totally ok with.

ChargeItDownMid1 votes

I think riot is doing a good job with their current formula and philosophy. Sona's winrate, despite a low banrate and pick rate, is probably too high and eventually, she will need a nerf. However, if you adjust for pick and banrate, sona's solo queue stats aren't as impressive as someone like mordekaiser and lux who are only a little lower on winrate but much higher on pick and ban rates.

Intuitively, I feel that sona is someone who should probably be addressed in the future and may be getting to the point of needing changes but isn't necessarily a top priority and I feel that riot's formulas capture that extremely well.

hhaavviikk1 votes

my biggest problem with sona is that she is boring, Q, W and E are all autotargetted, no skill or thought involved in using them, come mid and late game you might as well have a bit setup to press all 3 of those buttons every 2-3 seconds and you're good to go. same problem I have with udyr, must mash your face on the QWER and job well done, it's just so boring, it's why I always dodge in ARAM if I get Udyr or Sona

Daedric Etwahl1 votes

I do think that, while Sona's current states are pretty lopsided, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with one support out of like 30 playing more for the later game rather than the early. Still, lately her game has become super lopsided more than usual.

I wouldn't mind at all if Riot took some of her lategame power and injected it to her early, while still leaving her lategame power higher, if that makes sense.

Daddy Ants1 votes

As a 700k Sona myself I think she's pretty OP and could do with a small nerf.

I do think there are champions who should be higher priority for nerfs than Sona though - Jinx Lux Sivir in particular.

Nerf Sona -> Nami becomes the new Sona -> Nami gets nerfed -> Janna takes over

Everyone knows how fun it is to play a Bruiser/Assassin or low range Mage/Marksman when Janna is meta.

If I was going to nerf Sona, I'd hit her with nerfs directed at making Sona Taric / Sona Pyke significantly weaker without impacting her proper playstyle as Support Sona.

I'd rather have Sona be the best Support in the game than something like Lux Nami Janna Lulu . At least if you hook/stun a Sona she will die.

Sona Taric / Sona Pyke is oppressive and unfun to play against, Direct any nerfs towards hitting those play styles.

Her power chords are ridiculous. The Q does half the health of an adc by level 3 or so, and there's little you can do about it if your lane can't punish her. When she gets high AP in the lategame people don't appreciate how much work she's doing, there's just a lot going on... She needs to be focused because yeah she turns into the carry but it isn't as in your face as other carries. I kind dig that unique nature though.

IDK what I'd do with her, she's fine but the amount early game damage does feel a bit out of place.

Honestly if both laners are helpless to do anything vs Sona then they either got counterpicked/counterpicked themselves or they don't know how to play vs Sona.

When she walks up to poke that's when you fight back, don't let her get the poke for free, because once she hits you with Q-Staccato she has literally no more damage, that's when you want to hit her, she can barely defend herself at that point.

Just pick Draven Nautilus or any aggressive lane into her and watch how much harder it gets for Sona.

Also, as it is, poke is all Sona has for lane phase, it's what keeps her interactive because if she wants real damage she has to Power Chord. If you take away her ability to poke then she has nothing.

Yes, thank you for the tip and I agree 100%, you should be able to punish Sona for it - But yeah if you're counterpicked or your picks don't support it, like say our lane is like this:

Janna + Caitlyn and their lane is like: Sona + Draven

Then you're not going to really be able to do anything about it, barring jungle ganks or large misplays. Well, even in that lane there's still some wiggle room for Cait+Janna. Both of them have the range to return some poke on Sona, and can help harass Draven together, as Sona can't do a whole lot to sustain her botlaner. Plus Janna can deter Draven from snowballing with her strong disengage. Still, it is playing on the backfoot, especially since Sona historically does well into other Enchantresses, but there are ways around her.

Sona is very strong mid/late. I have nearly 60% winrate with her in plat. All I do is survive early game and poke, get my Athenes and maybe ardent then the game becomes a joke lol. I just stay near my team and spam heal them to full and perma shield them etc (her W is literally a spammable version of Locket). It's insane. Also Sona is really safe after Seraphs with infinite movement speed spam, literally nothing can stop Sona's spam if she has all that cheap utility going on.

So I am sona main from Euw, And i';ll be honest, Considering to what she used to be she's kinda weak rn! I started playing sona as DJ sona skin came out and a few weeks prior to that, after around 1 month or two of playing as her i found my "one shot build" Basically it worked like this: I rushed tear and was patient at laning phase took second Q at lvl 3 for harder harrass which would surprise most of the ppl and get easy first blood. Then the fun starts, cause with the advantage of first blood we harras enemies pretty hard, and just collect kills taking em from my adc without a single care. And Long story short, by 30 min you can one shot anything that does not have any sort of magical resistance, and when i say one shot i mean 3rd passive+ Q + AA WITHOUT ULTIMATE and its pure one shot 100% to 0% she was nerfed quite a bit and its a bit harder and u cant really one shot anymore, but she's still incredibly powerful, I read the post saying she's not supportive that is really wrong, with enough AP u can compensate not having exhaust with your W which would have 3 sec cd, if someone wanted, A strong slow, add to that u get mob speed boost and super heal with shields. Her mov speed gets so crazy i no longer require boots to catch up/escape.

I'll tell you this sona even tho she's crazy strong rn SHE USED TO BE EVEN STRONGER. my biggest game was 4v5 where our midlaner left, so i still had supp item and went to midlane, WE won the game really hard with me taking them on 1v5 ( even had pentakill that game) enemy simply could not touch me, i would one shot the adc, stun their team and charge my passive again to one shot their second carry, all while healing all the damage they inflict and kitting their melee.

My suggestion would be to rebalance her or just rework her, her W is weak early consumed to much mana, her E is practically only used to get to lane faster and avoid ganks, her Q is just for her to have some extra damage. her true nature lies in that passive, either sona needs to deal more dmg with Q and less with passive, or she needs to have dmg in other aspects of her kit, putting damage in one ability and to conpesate that make her insane with passive is wrong. EVEN THO I love this playstyle now that its out in the open i have to admit she could use a rework
