What does it take to get placed in plat1?

I was d4 last season, went 7/3 and got placed in plat4 while my friend who was d3 last season went 2/8 and also got placed in plat 4. Is placements just rank roulette where its completely random where you get dropped?

Prolly gotta be closer to diamond 1+ to get plat 1 I'd assume.

More like placements don't do anything. Pretty much see challengers, masters get placed in plat 1 since their mmr is that high in the first place and that being the highest you can get for some reason. Riot might as well start everyone one division lower instead of forcing 10 useless games on you.
