What kind of compensation will Kassadin get?

As is common knowledge now, Kassadin's Riftwalk range gets drastically reduced in the upcoming 5.4 patch, from 700 to 450 units. Some League players out there even go so far as to suggest renaming it to Riftstep or Riftcrawl, in light of the drastically reduced range.

However, for me, this is basically Riot finally giving in to the notion that a Blink with two/thirds again the range of Flash on a really short CD might be the source of all his problems, and that it could not be retained at the range it has. So, finally, after almost a year of experimentation, they gave in and finally chopped it down to a more reasonable range - which is a little more than Flash range.

However, this means there will be a decent-sized gap in his power budget. And, instead of bitching about it, how about we think about how to fill this gap? Might be that one of the Rioters of the Balance Team sees an idea in here they might not have thought about...

My personal ideas (not all of them, just ideas):

  • Return AP ratio to Riftwalk
  • Reduce Riftwalk stack duration somewhat
  • Reduce W's cooldown, possibly with levels, so you can include a Sheen item in your build path
  • Allow casting of E for half damage if not fully stacked
  • Crazy idea: Have the later ranks in Riftwalk reduce the cooldowns on his basic abilities (i.e. Rank 2 reduces Q/W CD by 2 seconds, Rank 3 by 4 seconds)

Do you have any further ideas for unconventional compensations (unconventional = not straight-up buffing existing base damages or ratios)?

And has anybody used item 3146 on Kassadin before? Both his Q and W active are counted as single-target abilities, after all...

I'm going to have to be a good Kass player, and can't dick ride the freelo train

Damn good observation OP. Upboated :^)

His compensation will be hes actually playable and not permabanned.

SpongebobIsLife16 votes

he isn't even permabanned.

Thefriendlyorc9 votes

Nidalee does his job from level 3 on and has range/heal. He didnt deserve this.

Major Sparkles1 votes

Except nid has to land a skillshot to 0-100 you.

Reazale3 votes

Yeah , kass doesnt need to land a skill shot , he just needs u to be at 50% hp or less, have an ally close or be 6 kills ahead.

Lol I literally haven't seen a Kassadin 100-0 someone in like a year.

He hasn't been permabanned for like half a year

His compensation for being less mobile than kalista/nidalee/etc is being melee with short ranged spells and having less utility.

I've personally always thought it was kind of strange that Kassadin's E has a cooldown and needs stacks. I'm no expert on Kassadin or anything, but what about bumping the cooldown to like 10-12 seconds (so it isn't spammable), and removing the need to get stacks on it? It just becomes a regular conic skillshot, which could give his weak laning phase a bit of a buff since his post-6 isn't as powerful?

Kitten of Evil1 votes

I never understood that either.

MakersF1 votes

Man, is that a nerf to lategame kassa!

Since midgame, if kassa is actually fighting the stacks are easily met, since you have 10 people near you using skills

MrBuffington1 votes

Good point, maybe have the cooldown reduce per rank of his E, back to the current CD

Maybe adding something like "Any damage blocked by Null Sphere's shield and reduced by Kassadin's passive is added to the next Riftwalk (max 200/300/400) or something like that. Give him a play pattern where you have to be careful about deciding to hit him with magic damage.

The other option is to only make it longer ranged when going towards an enemy champion and just gut its escape potential.

Zirzon3 votes

Does his R have a slight cast time? Thought I saw that somewhere. If so, they could remove it. (not that just this would be enough, obviously)

Fasmodey3 votes

They nerfed him because probably we will get Kassadin VU in next pbe cycle. It's like Sona nerfs. If this happen call me. Also we will get next champion too soon.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

yes there is an incoming Kass vu, they've already admitted to this.

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Well then, I'll watch for tomorrow's PBE update even more eagerly.

SpongebobIsLife1 votes

yea if they go through with this nerf, which I think they are, then I think they are gonna have to nerf nidalee really soon.

Reazale1 votes

There might be no Kass left to VU after this nerf xD

Chaotic Reks3 votes

compensation? they're gonna make his q a skillshot and they're gonna put a 0.75 second delay on his e

Decaedeus3 votes

Personally, I want Riftwalk range to scale with level: 450/550/650. This way, Kassadin's lane-bully powerspike at 6 is toned down slightly, but he still retains his core fantasy in the late-game as a tanky, mobile bruiser who thrives in spread-out teamfights.

Drunk Rummate2 votes

his compensation is lower mana costs, and since his R scales on base cost that means subsequent riftwalks cost less as well.

Junkο11 votes

He will still not be able to cast more than like 4 riftwalks in a row, while Nidalee, Vayne, Kalista, etc... can spam their mobility

Kitten of Evil4 votes

Riot Sotere was on another thread and pointed out -- Kalista's mobility may or may not be unhealthy, but at least it requires her to do something to trigger it. She has to attack enemies. Same with Vayne, whose Tumble has a very long cooldown if it isn't used to attack. Kassadin's mobility is unconditional, so is more likely to be a problem.

Of course, Nidalee's is even MORE unconditional (not even requiring mana cost), so no arguments there.

Reazale1 votes

A passive, a Q and a W (one of the 2 nidalee has). Kass takes his ult slot, a big chunk of mana if casted more than 3 times in 20secs and another big chunk of dmg from his ult and his other skills (this one is balance wise) for that "inconditional" mobility.

Kitten of Evil1 votes

Unconditional merely refers to conditions that allow you to use it. He can use his to dive in, get out, roam, for essentially any purpose and regardless of who or what is around him. That is the kind of unconditional mobility Sotere was talking about, in contrast to other forms which require attacking, or hitting a target. Mobility skills which are more conditional are less likely to be a problem for the health of the game.

I think it's hard to dispute that logic. Unconditional mobility is, in general, more problematic than conditional mobility.

MakersF1 votes

So a mobility that has a 100% uptime if any target is in attack range or if you have Q off CD is more conditional than kassadin's one? I can hardly believe that mate, they are basically the same in every real life situation

PL554 votes

It's not compensation, it's logical. With a nerfed ultimate, he should be getting lower mana costs for it.

KaisadiIIa3 votes

That mana reduction is pointless.

Condottiero2 votes

Give Kassadin his silence back since now his damage and mobility are both sub-par.

Raid Boss Morde1 votes

I don't think they will, considering it was a point-and-click silence.

Reazale1 votes

they could put it on his W , or a blind on it, its not like there arent examples of that.

Juggernaut Jesus2 votes

Riot's idea of compensation is taking away things. Compensation for less damage due to DFG removal? More damage removal!

IcyPepper2 votes

Veigar Oh you...

SEKAI2 votes

Look at what Veigar and Morde get for their "compensation", I am pretty sure Kassadin has also rightfully got his too.

If you get what I mean here...

brad2 votes

"compensation buffs"

u sure u want kassadin to get "compensation" like fizz and veigar?

insaiyanbacca1 votes

well considering his ult will almost be a joke now yes please

Auryiel2 votes

Maybe make his base damages not absolutely laughable?

His damage is disgustingly low

ForgiveColour1 votes

i think his shield should turn into a riven shield but scale off 0.5ap and last 2 seconds, and make his w cd back to 6 seconds

Blake Molly1 votes

I liked Kassadin.

Poorly Dressed1 votes

As i have stated somewhere else - they want him to be the 2015 Olaf :( Meanwhile LeBlanc is hyper mobile and bursts people into oblivion even without DFG :(

MakersF1 votes

Increase range for every stack, up to 700 again

Blainezy1 votes

Kassadin needs no compensation. The rift walk Range made him ridiculous. That much of a range reduction was a bit much , I think 550 would have been good, but he's in a pretty good spot balance wise now.

Hassi1 votes

Barely any CC - Force Pulse Slow duration isnt enough. No time for autos. Lackluster Damage - total 500 (210% AP) + (6% Max Mana) OPOPOP PBE nerf - Crippled him severly. You might aswell get mobis and walk. Now Akali Diana Zed AhriLeblanc and Talon laugh if kass tries to escape in lane.

jjookkeerr1 votes

maybe his E having a 0,75 delay

Fasmodey1 votes

What did I say?

If anything I have no fucking clue why they removed the mana return when landing on a champion. Rewarding him for using it offensively rather than as an escape. I think they should bring that back.

I'm also a little sad I can't really use Nashor's on him since his last rework. The one where his W had a .3 ratio and he converted magic damage to attack speed. That was great. Not everyone did this, but I did.
