Why don't we get assists when actually assisting in a kill?

Its like... you can not hit somebody for 10 seconds, even after taking 50% of their health, but leave or die and then someone get the kill, suddenly you don't get any assists. Why is that?! Its not even an exaggeration. I was playing Hecarim just today and I was fighting a Heimerdinger, ran at him at max E damage and got him to like 50% health before dying, then Xin Zhao goes and chases him down. About 10 seconds before he reaches him and finishes him off... no assist. None. Literally, 50% or more health taken by me and because of a 10 second difference I didn't even get an assist.

Riot, fix this shit.

Pretty sure the assist timer is 5 seconds

5 Seconds? Wow. So even if I take 90% of their health... if I wait 5 seconds and a teammate comes and secures the kill... then I haven't helped. logic.

Yeah. It's kind of bs sometimes.

From the wiki:

An Assist is the action of helping an allied champion kill someone. You can either score an assist by hitting (without killing) the champion in the last 10 seconds before their death, or by contributing passively during this period of time.

10 seconds is basically an eternity in a fight. If it took 10 more seconds to finish someone off, then you didn't do enough for it.

Um, no. Unless you're Garen with Warmog's, you can't regenerate any damage I just dealt to you. I assisted in that kill. Had I not helped the person in question might not have even died. In fact, in my example of me playing Hecarim and a Xin Zhao cleaning up, Xin almost died to Heimerdinger(he was at about 300 health when he killed him), so had I not taken that extra 50%-ish health from Donger he'd have gotten away with a double kill. Hence, me assisting.

You can make an argument for anything in the game being "assisting", from placing the ward that spotted the low health enemy recalling to a teammate showing themselves on the opposite side of the map luring your lane opponent into a false sense of security. Even dying earlier to an enemy could technically be counted as "assisting" because you got them to spend their cooldowns and mana.

At some point in time you have to mark an engage as concluded, and that's what the 10 seconds is for. You didn't do enough to kill Heimer, and your engagement with him was long over by the time anything meaningful happened to him. At that point, it doesn't matter if he took that damage from minion agro or from jungle monsters, it's a separate fight between a low health Heimerdinger and a Xin Zhao.

Still makes no sense. I assisted, period. Even if they don't count other things that piss me off like baiting an enemy under tower to their death or whatever, I'm fine with that, but when I take most of their health down(or heck, even just a small percentage like 10% or 20%), then with the current system being essentially that where you just deal damage you assist or shield or heal someone dealing damage, then I have assisted and just because its been 10 seconds it shouldn't just completely skip over my assistance. When they regenerate all the health I just dealt, or its been a full minute, then I'll accept no assist on them. But 10 seconds? Hell no.
