How do I learn adc?

shyv··2 votes·627 views

I fucking suck. How do I start learning without getting my ass kicked?

I want to learn Vayne because she's the most fun adc imo but I keep getting destroyed in lane. Last game we had a couple of tryhards playing irelia and rengar bot lane just to get the level 2 cheese and wreck me in laning phase. We won but I'm still salty and I keep getting these teams whenever I try to play adc and i just...... want....... to learn........ please...................

Quick tips:

  1. Finger exercises. Seriously, without practice you will get cramps from your right clicking. This is normal.

  2. Click the lantern! Or, in simpler terms, know how supports (if you're bot laning) work and how to use their kits as well as your own. Keep in mind that they are not your butler, they're there to invest in your late-game (or sometimes mid-game) carry potential, but they can and will likely leave lane at some point to either help teammates or take care of objectives via vision. Do not be alarmed, remember that you're two people on the same time, not a singular unit. And if you're having troubles with warding, that leads to my next tip:

  3. WARD. Seriously, this is not the support's job. Buy a pink ward every once in awhile. Spam blue ward like nobody's business when you're level nine. Don't last hit the ward when the support uses sweepers. DOn't just ward river bush, occasionally make an effort for some more useful wards if you can, which is infinitely easier if you use blue trinket (seriously, use that shit).

  4. Play support every once in awhile. Believe me, it helps. Playing both roles helps you get better at both of 'em.

  5. Make sure your last-hitting mechanics are up to par.

  6. Make sure to pick the right ADC's for the job! Seriously, Vayne's not too terribly useful if you have no way to get enemies in your aa range without blowing up, either through godlike mechanics (which, er, you're learning so that's off the table. No offense, none of us start out as Faker) or a frontline and support. Like, yeah, if you pick Vayne into Leona+Graves when your support chose Sona, you're going to have a bad time. Picking Sivir when the support chose Morgana? Now that's more like it.

  7. Don't rely on counters. Pick what you're good at, and focus on what you're good at. When the meta stabilizes a bit (we're kind of snowballey right now), it'll be a bit easier. Vayne can't usually win lane against Graves, so remember you don't have to win lane to win that match-up. Sometimes winning the game is just about surviving the laning phase, not winning it, as many people here can attest.

Oh, and one last thing:

  1. If you build glass cannon, anyone can blow you up. The key to dealing damage as an ADC is not dying. You are sustained damage, go in with the mindset that you can out-damage anyone after three seconds, but the key to winning is surviving those three seconds. Be wary of assassins, don't get in melee range of tanks, abuse your range, and utterly annihilate the competition.

ok this is all super useful! considering i main support i would say my warding and knowledge of supports is pretty good lol but i definitely don't use blue trinket enough. i like wards too much and i hate pinks so i've been staying with yellow trinket until like level 11.. i would say my last hitting is pretty good and i practice in custom games about once or twice a week but i find it harder to last hit as adc because one wrong move can put you in the middle of 2 people's burst if the enemy support is like, morgana or blitz or something whereas in top or mid if you fuck up you dont take as much damage all at once.

you're right about most of this, only thing that's different is that im trying to transition from supp to adc so i need to learn how to be babysat instead of doing the babysitting lol.

you're right about most of this, only thing that's different is that im trying to transition from supp to adc so i need to learn how to be babysat instead of doing the babysitting lol.

Don't.

Think of you as a partner with the support, rather than someone being babysat. You need to be independent when the situation calls for it, as well as the support. There is a thing called over-dependency, and trust me you do not want that.

shyv1 votes

well as support im pretty much babysitting every game lmfao

IcyPepper2 votes

Oh no I don't mean don't know how to babysit, but rather don't, er, try to get babysat?

Just trust me on this, I've played ADC as a support main. Obviously you're going to have to let your support pull your hand along the way (because let's be real, they set up plays more often than an ADC even could), but like don't be dead weight either. Be a big ADC, ward and stuff, let your support roam if you can handle it. That kind of thing. Ya know?

shyv1 votes

good advice. no i know that as an adc i shouldn't be expecting to be babysat, i just mean that i'm used to setting up plays and taking all the damage, so i need to learn to .. not babysit?

I'd say Vayne is a terrible choice for a new ADC. She's way too difficult for someone who doesn't understand the role.

Learn how to kite (I'm sure there are YouTube tutorials to help)

Learn how to abuse the brush in bot fights. If the bushes aren't warded you can dip in and out of them so the enemy ADC can't target you for autos

Learn what ADCs go with what Supports and what supports will ruin you.

Taric + Draven is a pretty great combo, but Morgana + Draven is way better if the enemy support is a Thresh/Blitzcrank. (Spell shield the Hook)

Counter picking isn't super relevant bot lane. As long as your support is efficient with your ADC, it's basically a skill matchup (unless you're actually hard countered on rare occasion - like Vayne is hard countered by Draven)

As a final note, is recommend you drop Vayne for an easier ADC. MF, Jinx and Ashe are decent starting points.

If you're really set on playing Vayne, have a friend play Blitzcrank. Amazing combo :p

well, it's not that i'm completely new to adc. i do know how to adc. i have like, the most basic understanding of how not to feed my ass off in laning phase. but my adc is at a bronze level and i want to get to plat so u understand my concern.

i'm pretty decent at jinx i guess, because she's super easy. but also super boring. i guess i am set on learning vayne just because laning as her doesn't make me want to uninstall.

as a support main i'm well aware of my matchups with adcs though, so that does help

thanks for the tips

Okay then play Jinx. You might find her boring now but once you're good at Jinx life is fun and easy. She has an amazing lane phase and late game and power spikes so hard. She's just fun in general. Learn her first, then learn others.

If you can't win using Jinx maybe take a break from learning ADC. Or put in some time and learn Draven over Vayne.

shyv1 votes

i am good at jinx. i dont want to play her. lol

z14GaKI7TO1 votes

....fuck adc just keep playing Leona lmao match history thuggin.

shyv1 votes

LMAO yeah i have a ridiculous win rate with her. but i figure eventually i'm gonna have to play adc and not suck

You learn by not not learning.

You play a bunch of games. Really, you should've easily bullied them out of lane early.

Bot lane soloQ rule #1: Always protect yourself. Don't let assumptions about your ally kill you, including the assumption that what they're doing is a good idea.

Anyways, adcs basic job is to clean up teamfights and push towers, their slot in the team is about their ability to take objectives more than some essential teamfight role. You often try to be behind teammates and let others initiate stuff. Their bread and butter for fighting is kiting, where you move between auto attack cooldowns. Reposition yourself to dodge skillshots and just reduce enemy damage.

I can't say I know much about Vayne, only thing I've read is never move forward with tumble unless you're 100% sure you'll win whatever fight you're starting. That goes for most mobile champions really.

shyv1 votes

yeah ive followed a lot of stupid plays by my support........... helps that i main support though because i can see what they're doing and be like "hmm i know that's not going to work" and ping them to stop

Play ranked as people use more normal picks there rather than in normals. It also may help if you're using a relatively low elo account. If you just get behind really fast and then just get zoned out of doing anything, you won't get much better.

You can also practice csing in just a custom game by yourself, and that does help.

shyv1 votes

i have a smurf that's almost level 30 and i kind of want to get it into low bronze so i can practice more but i also don't want to throw my ranked games and be a dick to everyone else playing, u know? like i don't want to intentionally feed to get into bronze i just want a bronze account.

Kaeblen1 votes

low bronze has a lot of people who are very angry at the fact that they can't climb out of bronze. I would never go there intentionally, but if you are, I suggest muting ALL players at the beginning of EVERY game. It will make the experience much more enjoyable.

shyv1 votes

i was bronze 3 in like 2013 and i dont remember it being that bad actually

level 2 powerspike aka push your lane

I learned by playing Twitch . I suggest this because he has essentially zero unique tools, and is required to excel solely by mastering the fundamental skills common to all adc champions. If you can become even a passably good Twitch, you will find all other ADC champions far easier to master.

a second suggestion is just using 5 minute custom games for cs practice. it'll help you get started.

my third item is one piece of advice I got from YouTube videos: play ADC like you are a complete coward. never face check brush. never go ANYWHERE alone. never venture into un-warded territory. picking your fights is a skill that will come with time, but NEVER walk into a potential ambush, even if you think you have backup. (the third suggestion is questionable, and should be taken with a grain of salt. allies may lose patience with you if you take this too far.)

shyv1 votes

that's actually really helpful bc i main top and support and i play tanks in both roles so im used to being invincible lol. no more facechecking. got it.

You just have to practice, really. I'm in the same position as you. Support main, recently dipping into other roles:

  1. Work on your CS by practicing in bot matches. Seriously, if you primarily play support, your CSing is probably mediocre. Mine was godawful when I transitioned. It's still subpar, but I'm getting there, in large part due to tons of practice.

  2. Don't play Vayne. Really, I get it. I love her kit too. But don't play Vayne. Caitlyn would be my go to if you're learning. Very easy. Ashe is another good one, since her w provides some pretty braindead harass, allowing you to focus on other things.

  3. You're going to suck, you're going to feed, teammates are going to flame you and hate you. Sorry. That's just unavoidable. It helps to have a good, patient support to back you up, so try queueing with a friend if you've any that are good in the role. If not, well, you'll just have to grin and bear it. Try muting everyone at the beginning of a match if you don't have a particularly thick skin.

  4. If you're absolutely getting stomped on, it can help to make a smurf just to practice. Not only are you likely to face easier opponents whilst you're still learning, but adopting a "fake" alias can help relieve some of the pressure, I find. I mean, it's not really you. It's just some smurf, right?

Lmao i'm good at every role except adc i do know how to cs. i just really wanna learn adc i know it's gonna be important if i wanna get to high elo i can't assume that i'm never gonna have to adc? and i know vayne is a hypercarry late game and she's also the only fun adc imo so idk. i used to be able to play cait before the rework now im too lazy to learn how anything works. sigh. everything is changing. im so tired. goodnight.

Just Blame Jenny1 votes

Fair enough. You've got point one covered then.

Truthfully, 4/5 roles is probably good enough to climb a long ways. Especially since it seems the new draft mode will allow you to main two roles without ever having to play anything else, if you don't want to.

z14GaKI7TO1 votes

You'd be surprised how many high gold games I've been in where my entire team admits they can't ADC. The role is a bit more popular now though so it might be fine not knowing ADC well.

shyv1 votes

honestly i forgot about the new ranked mode. im assuming i'll be fine even if i do suck at it i might not have to learn it.

Good ADC will know how to:

  • stutter step - Basically means that you click or attack move a target to shoot a projectile, then click somewhere on terrain in quick succession. It gets harder the more attack speed you have.
  • when to attack move (default bind is "A") - It's a keybind which makes you attack closest enemy target in sight and range without needing to click the target directly. It helps to maintain your champions max range. And you don't move forward with your champion if you fail to click on target to attack them. In some situations it's not good to attack move though (good example is near brushes and team fights where attack moving can sometimes mess up targets you're attacking, wards between targets and vice versa, but it comes down to preference).
  • OVERALL POSITIONING - This is most important. Be with your team and don't leave your support even when he's a dick sometimes. This meta is harsh for split pushing ADC's since people play mobile champions with good damage and ratios (Rengar, Ahri, Lee Sin, Zed, Riven, Yasuo). And ADC's especially early on are very vulnerable to ganks. You can't afford to get picked off by them because you're the "damage" and your team needs you.
  • TEAM FIGHT POSITIONING - This is also important and defining of a good ADC. You will never want to be front line since you're the TARGET. Don't even dare to poke when enemies have good engage champions like Malphite or Leona. They will get you and CC you til you're dead. Stay in back line and attack anyone who's in your range. Sometimes there is no room to switch to enemy squishies because their team has supreme amounts of CC and disruptive force to annoy the hell out of you. Attack who you see and switch to squishies whenever you can. The key is to deal most damage and not DIE!

Sry if you knew these already. After all i'm practicing my english skillz.

shyv1 votes

i would say my overall mechanics are decent, but positioning is definitely an issue. i main tanky champs mostly so i always wanna dive their backline lol

also your english is really good [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]
