Why I Am Considering Quitting League

shyv··32 votes·3,409 views

As someone who has been playing league for 4 years now, I've seen a lot of changes in the time I've been playing. But none of them have bothered me as much as preseason changes this year. I'm not here to whine about it, just here to explain why I think these changes are bad for a strategic game like league

  1. vision changes - Riot wants to encourage vision control to be a team effort and not just the support's job. they noticed that the majority of players in low elo didn't make use of their trinket upgrades because they cost money, so in this season, trinket upgrades are free and automatic. which is good! encouraging players to use the trinket is great considering how useful they are. but then you fucked it all up and took away wards completely. why?!?! how is that going to encourage people to care more about vision control when there are no wards??? trinkets are NOT as useful or reliable as stealth wards. trinkets are only available every 180 seconds or something and vision wards are visible, so if the enemy jungler wants to camp the shit out of you, you can't even ward to defend yourself.

  2. promo helpers - honestly I think this was just to please the whiners who are stuck in "elo hell" (not a real thing) so they can climb the ladder and have a sense of progression without actually improving at all. I mean, seriously, if you need help to win your promos, you shouldn't be ranking up! the ranked system works exactly as it should right now, and if you're stuck in a rank after playing hundreds of games, it means you are exactly where you need to be.

  3. no more soloq - i have no idea how anyone at riot thought this was a good idea. ranked was supposed to be a test of skill, to see how you as an individual work with your team and overcome challenges. if you're playing with the same team every game, you're not learning. you need to learn how to synergize with every team you play with. and we already HAVE ranked 5s. your solo queue rank for this season is basically meaningless because it no longer reflects how good you are as a player, but how good your team is. i have no intention of getting higher than gold 5 with 0 lp for the free skin, because I know anyone can get the same rank now so long as they play enough.

this isn't the game I signed up for and I am reluctant to keep wasting my time and money on it. as much as i love fucking around in normal games with my friends, i don't see the fun in playing when there is ONLY normals and competitive playing has been completely ruined. i've lost interest in league already just because of a few changes to the vision and items, terrified to see what they will do in season 6. i'm done. lol

Losing solo queue is a much bigger deal than any balance changes or who is OP or not. The entire idea of having premades with significant (>50%) game impact play with solos is idiotic. At least with duos, you don't have >50% game impact in a single premade.

Kürama3 votes

If you have a full premade, you'll be matched with a full premade so the game impact because of this change doesn't really count.

Vistha Kai1 votes

Then a guy wants to play ranked, but his buddies don't, so he ends up playing in smaller premade team.

Then he loses the game for his team, because his MMR is very inflated, thanks to the idiotic changes to matchmaking system.

Kürama2 votes

Matchmaking is going to be adjusted to accommodate the Dynamic Queues so no MMR matchmaking imbalances. No worries.

Vistha Kai1 votes

Oh, I can't wait to see that happen.

Kürama1 votes

No idiotic changes are going to be made.

You'll still need to be of similar rank to your queue-buddies, and the system is designed so that groups will almost always play against similarly grouped opponents.

"Almost always". I cringed.

It's just as restriction system is nigh-perfect with so high accuracy you couldn't even fathom.

That's why I was restricted for over a year and then at one point restrictions just stopped, despite I haven't changed my attitude AT ALL.

Kürama1 votes

In regards to MMR, you'll always be matched with and against players around the same MMR. If you queue up with a full premade, you'll be matched against a full premade.

I miss my wards and mana pots.

shyv2 votes

removing mana pots was just an indirect nerf to zed and yasuo honestly.

Xrusa6 votes

Did you mean buff

shyv9 votes

yeah i havent slept in like 20 hours

Agilsan2 votes

It could also be a nerf because the mid laners they face can't spend money on the pots lol

Vistha Kai1 votes

Most of the time they get poked out of the lane before getting enough gold to buy anything worthwhile, though.

Left Hook Larry1 votes

If you're getting poked out by a Yasuo then i got bad news for you

You're bad LOL

Vistha Kai1 votes

If you are a mana-hungry mage aganist a competent Yasuo there are three outcomes. Simplified version:

  1. He is passive and gets shit on.
  2. He is aggressive and shits on you.
  3. He is aggressive, but gets shit on, because your jungler camps him.
Left Hook Larry1 votes

You can ALWAYS outplay an aggressive Yasuo. Tell me an example of this mage that gets auto shit on by an aggressive Yasuo. Anivia? THe champ with 2 lives and one combo does half his health? Lux? THe mage that can farm from her tower with ease? Who are these champs?

Vistha Kai2 votes

Lux? Farming with spells? From under tower? You misspelled Xerath.

Honestly, though. If you think that having a spell costing 130 mana is a reliable farming tool in the preseason that forces mana champions to conserve mana like crazy, you must not actually be playing this game.

Not to mention that Yasuo greatly out-everythings Lux can do in the matchup.

Left Hook Larry1 votes

I play a lot of lux and it's honestly not that difficult. Especially after 7min when you get ur blue

Vistha Kai1 votes

You must've faced really bad Yasuo players and were really lucky with your junglers, if anything.

what about garen? that nerf was huge on him

The point about vision was sound, but the rest was "ehhh, now he's just whining because he feels above it all."

im not trying to sound like an elitist asshole i just don't think people should be rewarded for not improving. if you want to climb ranked, get better lol

The promo helper thing is only for Bronze5- Gold1 if I remember correctly. So if there is an 'elo hell' it won't go anywhere--if anything it'll go to Gold and plat. Riot used the promo helper to help people who keep getting demoted after ranking up; calling it ranked anxiety or something rather. So if you go from Silver 2 to Silver 1, and then back to Silver 2, if you are meant to be in silver 1 you will climb back to it (right?), ultimately helping people that get frustrated from trying to ply as a team and getting trolled or being held back by a teammate, which happens often in bronze/silver/gold elo. The kicker is that it doesn't help you in your series to get into silver/gold. Just your promo's into a new division.

However, I do agree with you, to an extent. Someone could get on a 10 winning streak and climb a division or two real quick with the new free win system. Once I got into Gold5 I climbed really fast to Gold4 because I was on a hot streak and I had a free win in my promos, but the ranked system still works. I was getting wrecked in the division up because I wasn't ready for it, so I fell back down to Gold5. I felt like it was over whelming at first because I wasn't on par with the players I was playing against and with. I wasn't on par with their CSing ability, their shot calling, the way they played the game after lanning phase and team fights just threw me a new one because in silver it was basically you get fed in lane and go and wreck every other lane pushing it out, or you solo carry the game by making them focus you by split pushing. I wasn't ready for the change, so I got demoted. However I liked it a lot, not because I can say I got to G4 and such, but it gave me incentive to play better.

I think Riot's intentions with this new system was to help people who are stuck in bronze, silver or gold elo to climb and get better at the game. Ultimately, if you are meant to be in Silver 5 you are going to be there because your game mechanics are at Silver 5 play level. The free win in your promos won't change a damn thing. To be honest, all it will do is help people who actually don't belong in silver/gold, but get held behind by their teammates. In lower elo, our games are decided by basically who afks/quits/rages first, so it gets very frustrating when you are trying to improve, but can't help but get stomped becasue its a 4v5, they're fed, or someone just doesn't group when its 40 minutes in--at our elo, your elo/lp can be fcked up for just one person on your team that basically just says: "fuck it, im done with this game. On too the next one, guys." You said it yourself : ' the ranked system works exactly as it should right now, and if you're stuck in a rank after playing hundreds of games, it means you are exactly where you need to be.' That hasn't changed.

The new champion select doesnt reward you for not getting better. It kills me everytime I see someone saying that the new champ select is going to ruin ranked games; you CAN STILL QUEUE UP SOLO. Why is that hard to understand?

TheDiff2 votes

Plus, you will get qued with the same type of players. You qued by yourself? Well at most you might find a duo. Riot already stated that they were going to place trios against another trio and the same goes for 4man and 5 man premade teams.

Dirty Roleplayer4 votes

Quit then. You don't need forum sympathy.

JohnTheLibrarian3 votes

Also missing wards. Promo helpers are probably a good thing considering the inconsistency of the matchmaking system as a whole anyway. Might be best if the new ranked was a separate queue, however I wouldn't jump the gun before its even released.

My thoughts.

shyv1 votes

yeah i guess i'm too quick to judge before it's released, but i really want ranked to stay the way it is. i don't want people in bronze suddenly climbing up to 1500 elo just because they play a lot and riot didn't want to hurt their feelings by not helping them.

JohnTheLibrarian2 votes

True, however some things to think about.

  1. People not being able to queue up with a huge elo change is still a thing. (golds still can't queue up with bronzies)

  2. friends who play together are likely similar in elo

  3. currently duoing up with friend raises the MMR of the other team. So a 4 man party of bronze 5s would likely get matched up in ranked games with bronze 3s+ if i understand it correctly. This is because they expect you to do better with known people

This along with known people reducing toxicity will hopefully even out the process while also adding more enjoyment to the process. Thats their hope anyway.

Meanie403 votes

The current way the DuoQ "penalty" works is by adding about 25 to your team's MMR, or about half a division.

So you're about right that a team of 5 solo bronze 2 players would be matched with a party of 4 and a solo all bronze 4 if this penalty is for each additional person beyond the first in your party.

However, that's just hypothetical, as the system would be much more likely to find a team of 4 to match against that team of 4 than it would be to put them against 5 solos, from what has been said about it.

(I used bronze 2/4 instead of 3/5 because there's an incredibly wide elo/MMR range in bronze 5, due to it being the very bottom of the ladder.)

JohnTheLibrarian1 votes

Thank you! I didn't know exact stats, this was really helpful!

I dislike these vision changes, and these extremely snowball games. 8/10 games are stomps. I don't know why they keep adding items like devourer and rageblade to the game. Be non existent in the game for 1st half to win?

I'm actually really sad cuz this is the only game I love to play [zombie-nunu-bummed]

shyv3 votes

yeah i think league is gonna start dying out in the next couple years if they don't stop messing everything up. wish it didn't though, been one of my favourite games since 2012 and now everything is different and it's never actually FUN

Krigjer3 votes

I've been playing three years and seen a lot of changes as well. The juggernaut update and Mordekaiser rework was the snowball, but I could adapt and live through it. The vision changes might be the avalanche.

My problem with the vision changes is that I'm not in the LCS or higher ELO. The entire team doesn't share the burden of warding. I still have to remind people to place wards, even though their trinket is completely free now. Before, I could buy wards and keep river warded myself (as support main). Now I have to depend on my adc to help me keep the area warded, and I can count how many times I've had an adc help me ward ON ONE HAND since preseason started. No, I'm not joking.

Previously I would buy a sight ward and gold gen item, and depending on how our lane went, I'd buy ap/mana regen/tank stats and more sight wards or a straight up sightstone. Other supports wouldn't bring a sightward to lane, which was their choice. I feel forced to rush sightstone first now or be screwed on vision.

I feel like Riot is forcing me to play the way they think I should. I mean, really? The nerf to sightstone ward duration AND how many charges you get?

I could put up with it all if they just gave us sight wards back.

Spacesuit Spiff1 votes

Get ahead in lane and pink the spot you can defend, yellow the other. Lack of vision before first back can suck but i feel it adds to the game overall.

I initially hated the vision changes, but then i realized it was actually more interesting to operate on less wards instead of just getting as many as you want for 250g

I hate pinks. They're only useful if you 1) pink a spot that isn't going to see much traffic, just so it doesn't get destroyed, or 2) are ahead and can defend it no matter what. I'm done buying pinks and watching it get destroyed 30 seconds later because no one will help me defend it.

And the new system isn't interesting, it's frustrating to me. Opinions will be opinions.

shyv2 votes

the nerf to sightstone is fucking me up too. so used to having 4 wards every time i back and now i only get 3 which is only enough to cover tribush, river bush and dragon when i'm support and those are all really important places to ward. but what if i need another ward. i Can not.

Just Blame Jenny3 votes

At first, I wasn't too fond about the absence of stealth wards -- but it wasn't that painful. I mean, it did make it much harder if I got behind as a support (i.e. I can't get much ward coverage on first back if sightstone is still out of my price range), and all but guaranteed I had to get a sightstone as my first item regardless. (Where previously, if ahead, I might buy something like a sheen to push an early game advantage, and buy a couple stealth wards to tide us over until my next back.)

Then I tried jungling. Well, that was a different experience.

I can get pinks. That's great, if a little limited. If I want to ward further? I've three options:

  1. Keep the yellow trinket to ward, foregoing a scanner. This option sucks because it makes it much harder to maintain vision control. Any halfway competent enemy laner is going to see me coming from a mile away, basically no matter what I do. Sure, I could coordinate with my team to circumvent this a little, but that's super hard to do in solo queue.
  2. Pick up the scanner, take tracker's knife as my jungle item. This seems to work okay, but makes me feel restricted, and diminishes my gank/dueling potential.
  3. Pick up a sightstone. Workable on some junglers, but sets a lot of them behind, forcing me to rely on others to carry. Often not viable in solo queue.

Sorry you feel this way.

This is the worst preseason in 6 years. There hasn't been a single change that has progressed the game, instead all the changes of this preseason basically undid every balance decision made over the last 2 and a half years and we are back to the state the game was in back in season 3, its super snowbally, champion and strategic diversity have been severely limited, the mastery changes offer basically no meaningful decisions or trade offs, and the game play is highly unsatisfying and unenjoyable.

After 6 seasons I'm about ready to quit for the second time. Riot has made it clear they are incapable of making quality decision when it comes to the state of the game and the community and have eschewed ethics for increased profits. Its a shame you feel like letting the game go, but I certainly don't blame you. Its in the worst state its ever been in.

yeah i don't think the other people get it, the ones that haven't been playing for as long as us. i've invested so much time into this game, i really did enjoy it before everything started changing. but it's just not fun anymore. and i know i'm not the only one that feels this way, but i also know riot doesn't give a shit about the players, so it's not like me making this post changes anything lol

You either except reality as it is and deal with it the way it is or move on. Such is life mate. Truth sucks sometimes.

well i'm planning on playing until i see how the preseason works out. if it's as shitty as it sounds, i quit, i'll move on with my life and it won't bother me. but if it doesn't suck as much then i'll probably just deal with it?

  1. Agreed vision sucks hard now.
  2. Disagree promohelper wont ruin ranked if you suck you get demoted anyway.
  3. Agreed why does soloq needs 5 man premades O.O like wtf.
FioraWillCarry2 votes

I actually like the idea of premades in ranked. Its far too difficult to to climb soloing in ranked. I've always believed climbing would be easier and more fun if you could stack a team of people you trust not to constantly feed double kills to Vayne bot lane.

Have you tried the new ranked yet? I mean, it is very possible that it sucks just as much as you fear... But have you actually experienced it yet?

nope, i don't play ranked in preseason. i'm just saying if all these changes stay in the new season i'm done playing.
