I never understood this: why can't you drink potions/elixirs while silenced?

I can understand not using equipment actives (I imagine it plays into the fantasy wherein there's a magic keyword or something that activates the armor/weapon/whatever) but you can't pop a cork on a bottle and chug it?

Cause I think there's some magical barrier that covers your mouth from doing such a thing. That being the case, i can only imagine this:

A silence effect does not literally plug your mouth/throat, though. If that were the case, you'd have a loss of air which would then lead to staggering for a breath until it ended which would also mean you got a slow effect on you and that's ridiculous.
