Are *Your* Supports..ahem..."Allowed" to, y'know, SUPPORT?

Way back when I stopped playing ranked entirely, I had more time to notice little things here and there and ponder on them. One of these things was that in almost every game I play now is that unless I'm grossly overpowered to the point where me dying is basically because I tanked turrets too long or I get caught out in a 1v4 or 1v5 situation via jungle-warding, if I need to back for health/mana or get a desperately needed upgrade, on my way back down, THAT is precisely the time the ADC (sometimes with jungler help) decide to commit to engaging the enemy and I can't even get in fast enough to even heal/buff/ANYTHING to anyone to get assist gold.

Alternatively, if they find this to have been a very poor choice and are running away to live, instead of running to where I can help 'em, nope, going to run through the unwarded sections of the jungle instead of where I have all 3 of my wards strategically placed or to mid-lane where that Zed (random example) is pushing the turret with a full minion wave at the helm.

ADC: "gg, ff @20, troll supp" Jungler: "yah, gg, fck him" Mid: "rak, plz uninstall" Top: "gawd, every game some fcktard has to troll"

..................seriously?

Why does it seem like the only so-called "support" happening is the circle-jerking of blindly agreeing on whatever the harasser is saying even if it would be clear as day that they are bald-faced liars if people would pay attention to things for more than 0.0000000000172 of a single second.

I apologize for the slight snark in my implied tone here. Perhaps I should not have stayed up all night (what? I couldn't sleep, my back is killing me) but I just can't seem to find teams that let me actually contribute in any meaningful way (on purpose, anyway, strangest of inconsistent luck sometimes falls on me, though).

So, whether you're that Zyra that dies setting up perfect Penta-Potential only for her coward teammates to not follow up, that Taric who ults only for everyone around him to port back to base immediately after while there's a tower RIPE for the picking, completely uncontested., or even if you are one of the other roles who might have some keen insight and advice, I'd like to hear from y'all and see where people tend to stand on this issue.

We have moved past being ward bots (even though we could do more than that BEFORE.......) and I'm so tired of people demand I be a PvP hero or take a dump all over me because I can't magically transform THEM into one.

Mute, report post-game for verbal harassment, and move on. The average LoL player is a drooling imbecile, and you can't let that get you down.

People don't look at the mini map. This is usually what happens.

I had very similar experiences when forced to support.

I've learned the following:

  • When you're going to go back and shop, say so in the chat, and ping a warning a couple times. Typically your ADC is less likely to go full Rambo with pings and a message in the chat window. Don't use a single ping, do it 2-3 times, people sometimes ignore a single ping, but 2-3 is much harder to ignore as it becomes jarring.

  • Watch the minimap for your jungler, there's few things more frustrating for a jungler, than to come gank only to have the lane not follow up. So if you're not on the brink of death, wait to see if the jungler really wants the gank or not, and maybe ping them back if you really need to back desperately. There's no reason not to participate in a gank and get more gold to back with if that's a possibility.

  • You're teammates are typically dumb, you probably misplayed something, they probably misplayed something, the thought process of everyone is flawed, and thus it's everyone's fault. The above is almost always true because either you or your teammates or both screwed something up, and until people learn personal responsibility, it's always going to be someone else's fault.

If you backed when maybe you could have had a gank, that's your fault, if they went in even though you were nowhere near position, that's their fault, but the point is, it's both of your faults for different reasons. To them, you made a mistake, to your mid and top laner, they probably have no idea what's going on and are just agreeing with the majority as is typical in human nature. To you, they made a mistake, but again, mid and top don't usually know what happened, so they'll go with the majority. Unless, they and/or you take responsibility for the mistake, there's just going to be a massive argument and it'll be detrimental to the team as a whole. This leads me to my final point.

  • You're better off taking the entire blame for something that you're not entirely to blame for, than trying to argue it. Just fall on the sword and apologize, don't take a stab at the mistake of the other person/people, just take responsibility for your own actions. Usually this will defuse the situation, and prevent a huge fight that discourages you from playing, and angers other people. This won't always work, because sometimes, people are just going to rage for the sake of raging and the hell with everyone else, but don't join them in it and typically you'll only have that one person that's a problem. The rest of you can pull together and win it, which will sometimes bring that one person back into line and they'll chill out after they burn that fire down to ashes or they realize they're being stupid.

I certainly do own up to my mistakes. To a fault, really. And being the stereotype Canadian, I know all too well of apologizing when in reality I have jack squat to apologize for.

I do attempt to communicate without it being confrontational as my annoyance lies within my thought process far, FAR more than what I actually express via chat or my in-game actions. Well, until they insist on treating me like their slave. I will defend my position when it's clear they just want to try and gain free reign by anonymous internet bullying and play the "I'm going to continue being a complete jackass and try to throw attention away from my inexcusable behaviour by flaming you when it's clear you're being a decent human being" game.

Ignoring people via mute or whatever? That is the equivalent of a doctor prescribing medication to take care of the SYMPTOMS of a health issue instead of addressing the actual problem. It does nothing long-term, and the short-term effects rapidly diminish in value and in some cases actually do more harm because you don't know exactly what all the various interactions are and choosing to turn a blind eye to it is opening yourself up to far worse if your aggressor(s) are truly determined to make your life difficult.

Yeah that's the unfortunate thing as some people are just going to rage regardless of anything you do just because that's what they do.
