Support should be a class, not a position
because simply put, 20% of the player base doesn't want to play the support class, and as long as it is a position we are going to have stupid long queue times.
buffing supports until they become overpowered might work, but what is more likely to happen:
- the support role will be inundated with players who want to win at any cost, but would incidentally enjoy playing another role more than support, so enjoyment for these players goes down.
- a lot of support bans
- the game becomes worse, because now you have a role that is overpowered simply to encourage people to play it, leaving everyone not playing that role frustrated by the interaction, so enjoyment for everyone else goes down.
- people stop playing as frequently because the the enjoyment went down for everyone.
The answer isn't to "maek supports maor better". The answer is to wake up and smell the coffee. Support should be a class, not a position on the map. That means there should be 5 gold sources instead of four.
As long as every role except support needs substantial gold to cooperate with the team and there are only four income sources (3 lanes and a jungle), then support will be a position on the map rather than a class of champions.
Two options:
- Its either 5 gold sources and supports require the same amount of gold as everyone else
- or a choice between long queue times or a loss of enjoyment (which could result in long queue times anyway)
I don't know what the fifth income source would have to look like, and obviously it shouldn't exclusively target support champions, but it should be mutually exclusive with the other gold income sources otherwise people will stack them.
Maybe an item that prevents you from damaging minions and monsters but constantly generates gold and allows you to pick up bags of gold around the map, so you trade objective power for strong map presence. People would likely want to play a strong ganker in that role, so you'd have to provide incentive for sticking around in a specific lane in order to skew the power back towards supporty style champions who make less impact when showing up all of a sudden, but more impact over time. Something like making the bags spawn after being near an allied champion for 30 seconds (but not the same one twice in a row).
What this does is gives room for people who want to play support type champions to play them, and the remaining people who just don't want to play support but would like to play a strong ganker or skirmisher to play that. Besides it shakes up this boring ass meta game that you've been stuck on for six years.
In other words, you have to create yourself out of this mess, number tweaking won't do it.
