How does Riot look at Zed and go
"Thats nice, he's nice, he's in a really good spot right now."
I just don't get it.

Because he kills champions like Nidalee

I was jungle actually, and i also had a feeding annie (mid) that game, if you check her score you'd see that as well.
But I've been playing this game since season two and Zed is by far one of the champs i don't understand, along side a few others, even lcs players and caster both talk about how zed is "one of the safest picks since he can beat about anyone" which seems odd to me. Does there really need to be a champ that "can beat just about anyone"?

Winrates.
Disclaimer: I hate zed.
He is only good in the laning phase.
I think they should Gragas him. Reduced damage on his Q against minions. Now he has to walk up to CS. He's always laned like a mage, except with an easily refunded resource (energy >mana). But he can pop people like an assassin. Think about Akali. Weak as fuck pre 6 because she has no wave clear, but she can turn it on once she gets her ult. Same could be applied if Zed had to walk up to CS instead of passively farming at range until he can 100-0 you with his ult. It also makes it harder for him to split push. I don't have a problem with Zed killing you with his ult and a full round of abilities and AA's and then getting to return to his clone, which I think most people have a problem with. It's his incredible safety he has pre 6, when he should have to pay for such a strong ultimate.
