"tradeoffs" Kalista Lissandra summoner 12

@OP I blame ghostcrawler. Correlation doesn't prove it's his fault but given how all the hypocritical bullshit works in favor of his favorite classes/champions it winks really suggestively.

Its also morello but he's always been shit at his job.

Does Morello even still balance? I haven't heard from or of him in a long time.

Yes, they had a video with him talking about the current balance a patch or two ago.

as if riot would've known to stay the fuck away from ghostcrawler after the balance debacle that was world of warcraft from wotlk up until his departure in mists.

Balance has never really been this game's strong suit. I don't know if it's worse than before because it has always been bad. It's definitely not trending to be better. If anything it's flatlined.

A lot of design decisions like not allowing hard counters, devaluing point and click, mana vs manaless, range vs melee are coming home to roost, and riot seems to have no answers.

MalzaharAnyLane7 votes

You forgot Flash. The fact that there's too many outs built in to basic good aggressive gameplay to prevent the game from ending in 15 minutes or less is what contributed heavily to the rest of what you mentioned.

Old Man Teeto5 votes

To be fair, games lasting between 30 and 40 minutes are much more enriching for both sides as they get to play their compositions instead of dying miserably the entire time.

The original mistake goes back to 2009. Riot decided to make a Dota-like game, but based on micro and plays instead of macro level strategy. Fine so far. And then they went and added 124 champions. The end result is like guns in CoD or Counter-Strike: there is no strategic reason to pick one over the other, so you just pick whatever is best and it is almost impossible to balance this.

What the new direction of the game needs is not 124 champions with 4 skills each, but 30 champions with 10 skills each. There's a reason Blizzard is intentionally limiting the hero pool in HotS.

There is little Riot can do at this point. They have two options:

  • Make LoL2 with a greatly reduced champion pool but more abilities per champion.
  • Make LoL2 with more emphasis on actual strategy (counterpicking, multiple metas, being okay with people getting owned with no counterplay due to decisions they made earlier).

They cannot solve the balance problem in LoL1 and it will haunt them, making them look worse and worse, until someone else does either of the above and steals their lunch.

Knight SoIaire 3 votes

or leaving loads of champions but taking stuff away from them this way each of them competes some specific set of tools that is harder to replicate we have tonns of skills and the main problem is that most of out top champions does everything their role can do

if we make champion's more unique by making them less owerloaded with diverse stuff we can return the strategic diversity of champion picks

Riots balance focus is what has me the most bewildered. There are a subset of highly picked champs that Riot for the most part doesnt touch. Then you get moves like the removal of DFG (which I dont feel strongly about one way or the other) followed by nerfs to to a champ like veiger who used to rely on it. Wut? Its so backwards.

The jungle progress has been similar. Oh look 3-4 junglers are dominating the jungle while most others struggle. So Riot makes the base jungle items themselves worse? Wut? While that might have a minor effect on those 3-4 power jungle picks it will hurt much more on junglers already struggling. Again, utterly backwards.

My biggest issue with Riot this season is the mess the jungle is in 3 months after the new jungle was released. That is far too long for the jungle to be in such a shitty state. Riot seems to finally have accepted that the drop in interest in jungling is not just that people are getting used to something new but rather that a majority of players dont want to be stuck jungling in the new jungle. Considering in solo que someone will get stuck with the jungle role, whether they like it or not, thats a huge problem. Add to that that the new jungle requires a much higher time/practice investment to get decent at, and its no wonder most people are like "forget this I just wont jungle".

Dear Riot, you cant make one role in your game 10 times more complicated than any other role. If matchmaking was always teambuilder style fine, you could get away with it. The reality however is the set up of your matchmaking/champ select means people who are not jungle mains need to be able to at least do ok in the new jungle without a 100 jungle games.

Retillin11 votes

All valid points. But what gets me the most is the "jungle rework".

They spent most of season 4 trying different jungle items (over all a good idea). Elder Lizard and Ancient Golem bounced back and forth as being the stronger every time they had their numbers tweaked. That's fine. The problem was that it was the same jungle champions that would just switch items. So Lee/Vi/Rengar/ect... would pick what ever one was stronger at the moment.

This CLEARLY showed that the issue was not the items or the jungle its self. It showed that jungle kits with assassin damage, sustain, and high mobility were the problem.

Fast forward to season 5 jungle. It's the same champions that are dominating (not counting NEW junglers or characters that are given a jungle boost like Nid).

Let's be honest, we on the boards are not as well trained in game balance. But if WE can see the issues then either:

  1. Riot is dumber than those on the boards/reddit/ect...
  2. Riot doesn't care about balance, they want flashy for the viewers.
  3. Riot would rather waste time and energy working around the issues instead of just tackling them (over loaded champions) head on.

Truthfully I don't know what one I wish it to be out of the 3.

The games balance has been shit and getting worse since tencent bought out riot games

Major Sparkles16 votes

Tencent bought out Riot 4 years ago. So you're saying that for the 2 and a half years before Tencent got involved, balance was perfect? Pfft

Oleandervine5 votes

I'd say balance has been pretty terrible lately, especially since the Shurima Event. That event was half-assed and rushed, and we're still waiting on things that happened because of it. Azir was bugged for weeks since his release, and Cassiopeia is still a steaming pile of numbers meant to pacify people into believe she's been balanced well. Ever since Kalista came out, things have been steadily going downhill, especially with the continually nerfed jungle and the completely uncalled for nerfs everywhere else. What really kills me is that a lot of these nerfs are spun as buffs, while the characters who actually need nerfs are given slaps on the wrist and called balanced.

I just hate how complex and nuanced the game has become. The vision game has become especially convoluted. It's like there's a constant war between vision and denial and it's just annoying. It feels like it stifles a lot of the action the game used to have considering there's just so much vision.

Plus...I don't like the champions that are popular right now...every champ seems to have mobility. If you don't have mobility then you're toast. There are hardly teamfights anymore. It's just a bunch of highly mobile champs running around trying poke and get picks, hardly ever committing fully because they really don't have to. Then they introduce champions like Kalista that just exacerbate the problem.

All in all I'm not too happy with the game in its current state. I'm hoping it will get better, but I feel like now that they've introduced all these elements it's hard to get rid of them.

Also I hate that LoL got GC...I mean really...WoW was first and foremost a PvE game, and PvP was always an afterthought. WoW PvP was and still is horrible...why would they get the man that created THAT to work on League...which is a pure PvP game? Makes no sense. Yes WoW was successful, but it's PvP wasn't.

I think the balance has been, "okay." However, with the introduction of Kalista it's really opened up an interesting dialog about mobility creep. Should dashes be capable of traveling through walls, should they be affected by slows, what does x champion sacrifice for mobility (nothing btw)?

More generally I feel like Riot has been trying to introduce/change too many things at once and has left the community confused with the direction League is going. I mean what's up with these Kassadin and Veigar changes? What's up with the DFG removal? What's up with the removal of point and click abilities on long standing champs? So many questions, so few answers.

Hopefully the smoke will clear and we'll have a more exciting environment to kill each other in then before.

Champions often do give up something for mobility. Kalista doesn't have Graves burst, Ashe utility, deathball contribution like MF, etc. Comparing her to other ADCs there are certainly things they have that she doesn't. She could still be overpowered, mind you, let's just not feed this idea that mobility is simply tacked on - Kalista would be nothing without her passive.

Envy Sin10 votes

Kalista does have graves burst. She needs a few autos in you to do it.

Who plays Ashe in ranked anymore? But even so Kali has walking wards. Which are better then hawk shot, A perma slow if done correctly/minions are around, And a knock up on her ult, Failing to see what she's losing.

Kuroi864 votes

Kalista does have graves burst. She needs a few autos in you to do it.

That's not burst though. Graves can unleash a hellstorm of damage from the edge of a team fight in a second and a half flat. Kalista needs four or five autos before she can deal Graves level of damage to a single champ, not even counting the fact that Graves deals AoE damage. Kalista gives up any real innate steroid and her biggest damage and CC are both tied to her oathsworn. Kalista is good, but situational, Graves can be useful in a lot more situations due to his damage and survivability.

Yandere Carry6 votes

graves burst counters kalista..... kalista is by far more than a "situational" pickup. She is highly mobile with insane damage potential and objective control

Narasimha7 votes

Kalista does have graves burst. She needs a few autos in you to do it.

Just to jump in, by its own definition, that is not burst damage. That is sustained damage followed by an ability to finish off. Otherwise, ALL ADCs could be said to have burst damage.

i said back in season 1 they needed to remove flash from going over walls but now with the direction they have taken this games its way past the point of it not being able to go through walls. What riot needs to do now is remove flash from being used by champions with already mobility moves in their kit. Lock the summoner spells out from those champions and force them to have to play safer like the none mobile champions that are forced into the only escape being a 300 second c/d and not 20 seconds. 2 types of dashes on a champion creates to much safe play for that champion with no risk factor involved besides getting cc'd from 100%-0.

Celeste Benal3 votes

Remove Flash.

Kitten of Evil8 votes

Remove Flash? RIP Brand Anivia Ashe (I could list more but I stopped at the second letter of the alphabet)

In the age of mobility creep, flash is essential for anyone who doesn't have mobility. Sure, it gives mobile champions even more, but it is the last thread keeping immobile champions in the game. Well, except immobile artillery like Xerath and Lux, who usually don't need a clutch escape.

Major Sparkles1 votes

See I totally disagree with you here. Flash is perfectly fine imo. Teleports/blinks SHOULD pass through walls but dashes should not. It thematically doesn't make sense for someone like Gragas to gut thrust himself through a wall.

I think it always feels really bad at the beginning of the season, but it certainly seems to be especially bad this year lol

Mandang03 votes

I think S3 was the worst (league of cleavers, league of warmogs, league of assassins), but it's pretty disappointing that the last one in that list has remained true since then. If Riot continues to actually nerf champions instead of kneejerk retracting anything significant (see Lee Sin/Kass for all of S3), then maybe they'll get this game turned around.

Personally, I'd love to see immobile champs be viable again, and it's a pipedream that we'll ever see sustained damage casters back in play...

Auz the Ripper9 votes

Well, in S3 it was almost always a whole class of champions at any one time that were dominating, so you at least had some choice

Now it's just about 10 individual broken champions Choose one or die

Marinaras Trench1 votes

I hate when people say this. Most champions are quite viable. They may not be overplayed, but hop in a game as one of these. If you play them right you can have a good bit of success only a couple is it really almost impossible to do well as. (Yes you can, but you have a huge disadvantage) Urgot Taric Anivia Sejuani Shen Skarner Yorick Zac Yeah tbh thats it. Every other champion is at least somewhat viable

Nameless Voice8 votes

You've got it the wrong way around. The problem isn't a small group of champions that it's almost impossible to do well with, the problem is that ~70% of the champion pool are balanced against each other, but the small set of "top picks" completely outshine them.

It's not an issue of "most champions are viable, but a few are too weak to play seriously" - it's an issue of "most champions would be viable if they weren't overshadowed by a small set of picks that are much stronger."

qetzel3 votes

Didn't somebody mkae exactly the same thread last patch?

MalzaharAnyLane47 votes

Someone makes this thread every patch.

The difference is, every single time they have a point. That's the sad part.

There are numerous players who are relatively immune to the balance churn but there are way more players who are extremely sensitive to it in the middle MMR's.

Kitten of Evil1 votes

It makes you want to pick up a champ who is basically immune from Riot's grasp and will probably never be changed -- someone like Anivia, or Caitlyn, or Malzahar.

BowMaster9301 votes

Ironically, I main two of those and have considered picking up the third. Play the off-meta champs cause no one will expect it!Anivia Malzahar Evelynn Poppy

Kitten of Evil6 votes

Don't get too comfortable with Poppy, they're reworking her.

Chromatic Eagle2 votes

I wouldn't say it's bad, but they're having a hard time explaining their changes while making contradictory decisions.

Old Man Teeto2 votes

Their decision to make assassin play viable back at the end of Season 2 was the worst balancing mistake they ever made.

Killer X 122 votes

So it'd be a better balancing decision to make an entire class type not viable for play? lol

Old Man Teeto2 votes

Many of the champions we now label as Assassin were played before "assassin's" were really around.

Le-Blanc, Kassadin, and Ahri were all played during season 2. In much healthier formats.

Killing a target with no reactive time is bad game play for both sides.

Them working like such, makes more champions unviable than ever before.

Krys Star2 votes

I wonder if it has something to do with Riot picking up Ghostcrawler. He was, after all, the butcher of balancing in World of Warcraft.

68854078_DEL2 votes

What I would like to see is more champ diversity. It's painful to look at same 15-20 picks in LCS each patch until they nerf some and buff others in next patch. I also find if funny how something is not played until it's picked in LCS and then it's played everywhere. Zilean for example, until Faker picked it and carried the game, everyone was just laughing at the champ probably,. After that he was picked or banned in every game until he got nerfed.

jv21blU7oD4 votes

You're not gonna see pick diversity with how Riot are introducing and balancing champions according to roles instead of balancing them as individual characters and focusing on what each of them can do uniquely that nobody else can.

What's the point of releasing Vel'Koz that's just another backline control mage for example? What exactly does he bring that no one else in his role does that is actually a meaningful and unique mechanic only to him? No having a knockup instead of a straight up stun is not "unique" it's hard cc like many others in his role already have it's just a slightly different take on it. Literally everything he has someone else has but just in slight differentials to how damage instances from spells work or how the cc stuff procs. The whole thing seemed more about introducing a tentacle monster to the league than actually trying to introduce something unique gameplay wise.
