After watching Shen's spotlight, there is something I have to ask.

Why do they recommend AD items on a champion with no AD scalings? This has always bugged me with Shen (Especially that AD and attack speed work better than some AP with his tank) since he doesn't have any AD scalings in his abilities, thus none of his abilities (except the health based ones) benefit off of that.

Riot: Is there are a reason why you don't give him AD scalings?

The suggested items were titanic hydra (50 ad) and Steraks Gage (25% base ad, and another 25% when shield pops).

Titanic hydra may give 50 ad, but its passive scales off of the maximum health of the user and it provides split push potential. It also boosts hp5 and doesn't have lifesteal (because you're right, tanks don't build a lot of ad to make lifesteal worth it). So, Titanic is a great tank item. If you are confused about the 50 ad, don't be; attack damage is good on all champions, because there is no cost on auto attacking. Its also essential to get some ad or ap on a champion that is going to split push, because without one of these, its really hard to take towers.

Steraks Gage amplifies base ad, or the ad that is gained through level ups but not through runes or items. This makes Steraks a phenomenal pickup on a tank because they have higher base auto attack damage and usually higher ad growth per level, making that 25% boost more effective on them than on other champion types. Secondly, the shield Steraks provides is based off the maximum health of the user making it, again better on tanks that invest more in health. See a theme yet? Finally, shields scales off resistances that the user has, so a shield for 30% of the users max health plus the resistances from other items/ abilities makes it an even better item for tanks looking to absorb damage.

Basically, the only items they suggested that shen build with attack damage are both heavily oriented towards tank champions.

I see. Thanks. Honestly it just bothers me that his AP scalings don't seem to be put to much use. His ult has 135% AP scaling after all, so just one AP item would make it better (though it already is awesome).

masterdragon4811 votes

I would very strongly consider picking up abyssal scepter on him. Also, he has 2 ap ratios; one on his ulti (which you mentioned is already very good) and one on his Q which, in an ideal situation, is nearly always up and is doing % max health damage. I don't think he needs better scaling with ap than that.

He also has health ratios (great on a tank) on his passive shield and his taunt. To be honest, new shen is going to scale so much better than the old shen did.

Rylais is also good

GET FROZEN MALLET

<3masterdtagon481

masterdragon4812 votes

No, I actually don't see that. Rylais doesn't give any resistances, nor does it make his only offensive ap scaling much stronger because its not reducing mres and the difference in ap from abyssal to Rylais isn't going to make up that difference. He also has no way to apply the slow at range and since his Q is an on-hit effect, it may not even proc Rylais. So if you are looking for perma slow, I would argue you're better off getting frozen mallet for more health and more consistent slowing.

TNHA Baritone3 votes

i should delete my ignorant post LOL

elon wątroba1 votes

I think that Chogath e procs rylai and it's on-hit as well.

masterdragon4811 votes

You're right, so you could get the slow from Rylais on Shen's Q; but I don't think that the other things Rylais gives makes it worth picking up; there are better items. Also with Rylais you are dependent on being able to cast to maintain the slow; frozen mallet is far less limiting.

Ralanr1 votes

I do live abyssal scepter on him.

I hope we get more varied MR itemization. It feels limited sometimes.

masterdragon4811 votes

It needs to be somewhat limited. If its too extensive, burst mages get shut out of the game. Its happened before, when Aegis (thats still an item) was too cost effective, when force of nature was an item, etc. There are a lot of mres items in the game, but they need to be balanced very carefully.

item 3060 is the best item for making use of his AP ratio especially vs AP top laners since they have serious trouble clearing the minion.

That super minion is OP XD.

Only Items I can see right now for his scalings could be item 3146 item 3157 item 3001 item 3060 item 3116 and holy shit, this item is still here item 3056

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

It honestly depends on the kind of tank. Amumu and Sejuani, who are both "burst tanks" can actually use their scaling for massive AoE damage. Others like Volibear and Shen are more single-target focused and rely on autoattacks for a lot of their damage.

Meaning that you can go Rylais then tank on shen, but what does that provide? It gives an extra 100 on his ult, which lategame will have 850 base. It gives 6% max health on his next 3 autos? On a squishy with 2000 HP, its 120 damage. On a tank with 4000 HP, its 240. A Titanic's 50 AD does 150 to your target and then the AoE in a cone. If youre fighting a squishy or have the cone hit at least 1 other target, and your DPS is increased more by Titanic than RoA. And Titanic allows you to splitpush better/faster.

Give him more AD scalings then youll see him turn into a bruiser. His 1v1 damage and tower pushing will be that much better. Not sure if thats a good idea on a champion with a global "join/save your team" ult.

I would assume for his Basic Attacks.

Earl Eulrich3 votes

he still has an 1.0 ad scaling on auto-attacks and not much more to do...though you might be better of investing in coffee to keep him awake on his slow pursuit of his former glory.

Little Stick Man2 votes

I never understood this either, kind of like warwick and why he only has AP sclaings?

Silents4292 votes

Why do they recommend AD items on a champion with no AD scalings?

Because auto attacks on a champion with enhanced auto attacks.

Titanic works as a tank item too.

BattleBalladeer2 votes

Anyone else wondering why they said in the video that he is still viable in the river?

Didn't they wreck River Shen by changing his sustain abilities?

In game Shen is a beefy, energy-based tank who can take up roles in solo lanes, the river, and the jungle.

At least they made a reference to it.

Ralanr1 votes

Dear god...what the fuck? That's basically everything I like about a jungler...

BattleBalladeer1 votes

No its the River Shen I'm worried about, not jungle Shen. Have you ever seen the playstyle? Its like being a jungler but you never use jungle creeps. Just the river creeps and enemy players.

The original idea revolved around the idea that shen's passive and q could fully heal him off of the scuttlers and then he can immediately gank, return to scuttler, and then gank again.

Also as a rule River Shen may only bring Ignite and Exhaust.

Ralanr1 votes

Hence why I'm liking that. The thing I hate the most about jungling is the need to go after jungle creeps.

BattleBalladeer1 votes

Oh I misread that. Awesome. I'm just hoping its still possible.

If tanks had AD scaling they would be broken as fuck?

Sion and Poppy are tanks with AD scalings. Now while I've heard people complain about Poppy, Sion is pretty damn balanced.

Dominick Destine3 votes

Sion isn't "balanced", he sucks.

Ralanr9 votes

Doesn't really disprove the earlier point though.

Scarabking1 votes

http://champion.gg/champion/Sion 52% winrate sucks i guess. :/ damn you have to shitstomp ppl to be good in this guy's book.

Cowgirl Ed1 votes

I dont know mate, riot games is smoking some weird shit these last years

Beuhlakor1 votes

Poppy is far from "balanced". She is borderline OP and there is a reason why you see her a lot at high elo and professional scene.

Ralanr1 votes

I guess only OP champions are played in high Elo.

he deals a lot of physical damage, and scales well with items like triforce and steraks despite the ap scaling on some of his abilities.

his passive deals physical damage. and he scales somewhat with attack speed.

triforce sheen proc on top of his passive actually deals quite some burst. his health scaling also makes him synergize well with titanic hydra.

overall, he works better as an ad bruiser than ap.

HandheldBrandon1 votes

His Passive deals no damage and is a shield.

His Q does magic damage.

The reason trinity forced worked well on old shen was because he could proc it alot and it allowed him to stick on top of his opponents even better than he already could.

Also Old shen his passive did magic damage not physical damage.

DELDE1151 votes

You think Shen is the only one?

Ralanr1 votes

I know he isn't. It's actually why I didn't play tanks in the past because I disliked AP items and all the tanks had AP scalings.

They have AP scalings so that AP isn't totally wasted on them if they build a hybrid item like abyssal, but they aren't supposed to scale well with offensive stats or else they'll start building like assassins instead of tanks.

The AD items recommended on Shen are things like Titanic Hydra that actually makes hp more powerful on him or Sterakk's which gives Shen a ton of tankiness when he's in trouble while also providing some nice base damage. He doesn't need AD ratios on his abilities to like these items because he still has auto attacks (also sterakk's wouldn't really benefit most abilities with AD ratios anyways)

Melledoneus1 votes

The real question is...

Are we running Flash-ignite on Shen now? Every clip of Shen dueling someone, he ignited them.

Baron of Bread1 votes

TP isn't needed on Shen since he can assist allies with his ult instead. TP can still be a nice option of course.

Melledoneus1 votes

Meh. I suppose I'll play Shen more aggressively now.

Scoroct1 votes

he does way more damage with his new kit, so its definitely more viable than before I think.

Sasogwa1 votes

If he has no AD scalings, AD builds will be garbage. People are just going to realize he's better as a tank and start building him like one (full tank, or slightly magic damage tank)

Because Riot provided stats are garbage and shouldn't be followed.

Riot also states that Mordekaiser is an ADC, that Katarina is harder to play than LeeSin, and that Sona Akali have the same AP power levels.

Don't follow the champion spotlight.
