Who actually does well into Irelia?

Mighty Mortein··1 votes·912 views

I've been getting into toplane as a jungle/support main and I've seen a fair amount of Irelias, which is probably the most annoying champion to lane against. Innate mana and HP sustain, and a stun/slow. I get she's supposed to be lower than you to stun you, but I've been stunned a lot when clearly she has more HP than me. Plus the new triforce on her is annoying. So I really question. Who actually can kill or at least trade fairly with her in top? :/

EDIT: Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. I'll definitely try to learn some of the champions you suggested like Mordekaiser or Maokai and maybe even Pantheon. I actually have played Panth and Maokai in jungle a few times, and I enjoy their kits. So seriously, when I get top in a norms or maybe even ranked, I'll try them :)

Akali is SO HOT4 votes

Matchups that are always really hard or impossible to win for Irelia are: Darius Illaoi Mordekaiser Nasus Pantheon Renekton Volibear Irelia has an edge on Nasus early but once he gets Sheen and some Q stacks all he has to do is press W and Q and he wins every trade. If you really just wanna shit on her then go Panth because he has no way to lose the lane unless he afks.

WoonStruck2 votes

Volibear destroys her.

A decently played Fiora will wreck her.

Pretty much everything else is 50/50 or in her favor that I can currently think of.

A well played Cass might do some damage to her. However, you'd have to play her in a long lane, which can be a struggle, esp if you aren't blue side.

New triforce isn't really doing much but padding her early game with 15 AD from runes instead of 29% attack speed. Some people run 9 AD 15% AS.

She was always that strong after TF.

She has no mana sustain in any way, shape, or form. Q does not sustain mana.

Her E cannot stun you if her HP is higher than yours. You're dropping acid if you think otherwise.

Teémò2 votes

Akali Amumu Teemo akali can just keep dashing if she tries to stun to get away. Teemo can just flat out deny the empowered stun. and amumu can do 2 things. He can proxy like singed with his E or use his abilities to deny her from farming. If she tries to engage to get a minion u push out the wave and shes in front of ur minions otherwise just keep last hitting

It's a really old tactic, but it's still very strong + counter jungle possibilities well proxying

She may be really good at killing minnions undertower, but you'd outscale her

I feel you have the Akali match up all wrong. Basic misconception about Akali is that she somehow has no cool down on her dashes like yasuo and just dash to victory. Unfortunately she actually has a 3 second cool down for rank 1 I seconds for rank 2 and a 1 for rank 3. Irelia ends up being a huge lane counter to Akali for that specific fact. A good Akali can still win the match but it's a massive pain in the ass and if the irelia bought a pink you lost. The only way for Akali to beat irelia 1v1 is to get shroud down before irelia hits the stun. Then you end up surviving because she can't auto to proc her sheen and ends up dying to the sheer burst you have coming out of the stun.

Teemo doesn't exactly work in the way you describe. Irelia E will still stun Teemo despite her being blinded because it's a point and click ability not an auto attack modifier. The way you use his blind is before the stun to deny her sheen procs.

As for amumu. Once you have a decent health pool and a few tank items you should easily win the 1v1. She however will have the edge early. The way to win would be through one or 2 good ganks. Then she will be far enough behind that you win.

EndlessSorcerer2 votes

I've always like picking Nasus into her. While she has a bit more early pressure, she can't harass you well under your tower or break a freeze easily (since by the time she has her ultimate, you can just tank the wave and sustain through it) which means you can freely stack your Q.

Wither is a very useful ganking tool since Irelia's only mobility spell requires an enemy be in her escape route. If she is near your tower (where you should be holding the wave) and you Wither her when your jungler comes, you can easily kill her.

Once you have about 200 stacks, some defensive stats and Sheen (i.e. 10-13 minutes into the game), Irelia can't fight you anymore. Wither cripples her DPS and your Q will hit her for about a quarter of her health.

The only really worry is her roaming for kills, but you can just shove down top-lane towers every time she tries.

Fizz Fiora Darius Malphite Volibear Jax Olaf i guess these from my experience

WoonStruck3 votes

Irelia crushes Olaf.

Jax is 40/60 Irelia's favor. Mostly due to how insanely hard she spikes at TF compared to him. If you play it poorly, you're in for a really bad time as Irelia though.

Darius is in Irelia's favor lvl 4/5, 7, 9 if she isn't letting herself get denied too hard. This match-up is a razor's edge; can go either way.

Fizz was in Irelia's favor last time I checked as well.

Malphite is a farm lane. He can't do much to her, she can't do much to him. Malphite has much more to lose, and its much easier for him to lose it, though. Any farm lane for Irelia is already a winning lane.

Fiora? I guess you could call it a skill match-up. Fiora just rapes Irelia Early if she knows what shes doing. Irelias E is telegraphed enough that it will get reposte. After that she will lose the trade so bad that she will not want to do that again. Its pretty much a Fiora free farm and Irelia gets denied. If Irelia tries to farm her vitals get slapped up.

thats the 1v1. The only hope Irelia wins this lane is jungler intervention.

Edit: Nm i was just venting from a loss from fiora on my smurf earlier this week. Lvl 3 tower dive from Vi snowballed Fiora.

You can go toe to toe with fiora if you use Armor quints and yellows and start Cloth4.

well as an Irelia you can use your Q to dodge Fiora damage and you have built in sustain with w and true damage went active and your e provides a slow/stun based on hp. so if you are safe early for the 1st 3-4 lvls then it becomes a more even lane. then thing with Fiora isnt to try to 1 vs 1 her just dont let her get an early kill and snowball. also Irelia scales much better late game and is better in a team fight. so there are pros and cons to the match up and over all game aspect. but if we are talking lvl 1-3 and trying to all in and fight then your right Fiora wins.

Kuronok21 votes

LOL since when Irelia's E is telegraphed? It's very fast and you barely have any time reposte it. Lest not forget about ping here as well since it makes it much harder for Fiora.

It's not easy at all to reposte Irelia's E, it's not impossible by any means, but it's not easy.

The information you are giving does not apply to anyone on the boards that would be interested, basically.

I'm not discrediting it in masters. I'm discrediting it for people looking for Irelia counters. Pretty much the only true counters are Volibear and Poppy so far.

Other high level Irelia players don't have the same opinions as him, so I wouldn't consider his listed hard match-ups all as hard match-ups. And again, a hard match-up can easily be a 50-50 to ICU. Its a match-up that can easily go either way, and the higher you get, the more players worry about consistency, hence 'hard'.

ICU doesn't believe there is a true counter to Irelia even. Watch his stream if you don't believe me.

And ICU playing Irelia more than say, Hauntzer, doesn't mean that only ICU's opinions of Irelia's match-ups matter.

well in theory if you are a better play then your opponent then there are no counters. right? but based on kits, items, power spikes, champ design ect there are counters. you can be come a god on a single champ and know how to face all of them . and for someone who is main of a champ who is on the highest level of competitive play to say when i face the people on my skill level who are jsut as good as me so skill is as close to equal as possible ( which is why there is rank/mmr) that these champs are hard for my champ. there for based on thousand of games from that player through the meta changes, patches, buffs, nerfs items ect would truly know how to play that champ and all its match ups. now lets take this to lower elos say gold and lower the champs are still the same champs and the skill match up from gold 5 to gold 5 or bronze 1 to bronze 1 are similar and equal that is why they are same rank. then rules from master main of said champ would still apply. and it comes down to power spikes of champs with levels, items.

just as any other 2 random champs facing each other. lets take a bot lane adc match up for example Caitlyn is a strong early adc lane bully with poke and range and Vayne is a weak early adc that can be abused in lane due to lack of range. ideally early Caitlyn counters Vayne but as the game progresses to mid game that advantage starts to tilt the other way where Caitlyn falls of mid and Vayne with levels and core items starts to spike.... come late game both champs being full build a cait is strong in poking /siege. and vayne is great at 1 vs 1 and dueling. so if a cait and vayne face off late both being full build and both players would be of equal skill the vayne would win due to her kit and champ design. yes? so all champs have pro and cons and power spikes due to levels and/ or items.

WoonStruck2 votes

The same rules apply, yes, but players don't understand how to utilize the tools they're given to nearly the same degree.

I would in no way say that Irelia counters gnar, teemo, vlad, etc below gold. Just like gnar, teemo, and vlad get dumpstered between gold and diamond 2. Above that, players understand potential and trading stance much better, and are able to punish the fact that irelia is melee early on hard enough to set her back, and know that she can basically kill any one of them after 2 TF components if they stand by a low minion.

Shen is decent. Maokai actually isn't bad either. I honestly usually just pick a stronger team fighter and then play the to come out even and win team fights since I'm a better team fighter.

Kuronok21 votes

Irelia can't do shit against Illaoi.

In the first levels Irelia can try to get a kill and snowball the lane, but as Illaoi there is no need to risk yourself in this stage so you just have to play safe even if it means lose some CS.

After level 6 if Irelia ever try to engage, you just E her then ult. She'll either die or burn her flash (don't let she bait your ult with her Q). As Illaoi gets her first item Irelia will 100% die every time she engages and you pull her spirit and ult.

GenghisEmo1 votes

If you good with Susan, you can farm under tower for days.

Malzahar top lane for early bully pressure with range and then the late game you kite her. Malz that busted he is everywhere (not op per se now, but ppl still struggle so much i still think he is a must ban in low elo).

Vlad top another ranged mage that can kite-ish, sustain as much, and turn in around well.

Gnar to an extent for early pressure, but hard to use in that the bar needs to be managed well.

Jax, a low skill cap carry, with great, great split push pressure, but Irelia is super freaking strong this is not really a counter, but can help instagib other priority picks and to an extent can force wins in low elo.

Illaoi since people still struggle with her in low elo. So it is a great bully and the changes to her have been really great on her. She sustains great. Just do not get caught out 1v3. Don't get me wrong your ult can still save you, but you are a sitting duck w/o it.

And Darius is a hrd counter.

They say Poppy, but after nerfs i havent faced an irelia as her (might still work, im sure it will XD).

Renekton early game i boss. Helps out a lot.

Panth early game strong as f. But falls off. But if you got a hell of a lead, you can exert your pressure much better.

Volibear in early game you sustain well and deal damage. But after nerfs, he falls off a bit more than before. However, he is still a "lower skill" based pick which if what you want in low elo.

Not many, considering that she's basically the best top laner in the game at the moment.

Mordekaiser stomps Irelia in lane like he does basically all melee match-ups, but if you get camped you're probably going to feed.

Also, don't listen to that nerd who said Fiora wrecks Irelia. It is at best a skill match up. If the Irelia doesn't telegraph her stun Fiora is going to lose.

Swiftstrike41 votes

Nasus plays really well into Irelia as long as you do not die early. Irelia is an attack speed based champion and Nasus' wither is an attack speed slow.

If you examine a common early item for him item 3110, you will easily be able to kill Irelia with just this a couple hundred stacks and not even sheen (if you are new to Nasus). FH also slows attack speed by 15%.

A seasoned Nasus can build a couple armor items, sheen, and kill her with 100 or so stacks if her ult is down.

The problem will be if you die early. If you die early and she freezes the wave you will have a lot of problems as Nasus and will have to play the remainder of the game catching up.

Captain Aishi1 votes

before the W nerfs AP Xin Zhao used to obliterate irelia, because she would never have the burst to outright kill you, and when she dropped you low, couldn't stun you so you'd auto her to heal back enough that she didn't have the DPS to kill you during the stun as you turned the fight around, at pretty much any point in the game X(

tanky toplane warwick used to work decently well due to the playstyle being relatively similar

DunkinNoobs1 votes

The only champions that really have the edge against Irelia are those with even bigger balls of stats than her since her fighting pattern basically has 0 counterplay. Think champs that have naturally high damage and build tanky. Volibear Nasus Malphite Poppy Illaoi. Beyond that, you just lose. She has too much sustain for pure tanks to handle and too much burst and CC for squishy champions to handle.

From the look at match-up data, classifying winrate shifts of 3% or more compared to average as doing well:

More than 250 analysed match-ups, so probably less pure mains involved: Darius Pantheon Illaoi Singed Sion

Less than 250 match-ups, indicating that these champion are low pickrate and thus probably used more by experienced players: Mordekaiser Quinn Zac (although he is less played top on this patch, he was doing well against Irelia a few patches ago).
