rank doesn't seem to mean a whole lot. i've crushed diamonds and gotten rekt by bronzes, i've had to carry plats and i've been carried by silvers.

If you're in the same game without being premade, theres a pretty good chance that you're all comparable skill. It's not terribly uncommon to see gold/plat/diamond 5's in silver/gold/plat 4 games since getting demoted tiers is hard, but having your mmr fall that far is a very real possibility, and people tend to forget that MMR is the actual thing that measures skill, not your rank.
