In his original story he saved his parents and his home, but in the new one he loses them and kinda becomes like Batman. Moody and dark is the opposite of who Zac is.
It doesn't really fit his character, the nice guy vigilante who embodies the trope of "Don't judge a book by its cover"

I agree. Plus it's trite. How many League champions have lost everyone they love and become the hero after the fact (or the villain)? Too many to count. It's becoming a bit overused.
Agreed, they essentially just took his old lore and slapped edginess on it by killing off his parents. I think we have enough stories like that in LOL as is, and if anything it detracts from his character by throwing him onto the pile with all the other mopy edge lords when he was already unique as an upbeat Zaunite.
This is just my opinion, but if you read the lore, it doesn't look anymore original than that. It's all the Spiderman "With great power comes responsibility" and he is now a good guy cause of that.
Now, the built to destroy but has feelings thing is great, it's the best part, it's what makes Zac, Zac (Despite how cheesy the last sentence is "Originally built to destroy, he now protects the innocent and the helpless")
The point is, and this is the same point i argue with the new Leona, is that people are not just "good" for the sake of story. Things happen to push people towards a goal, or a certain aspect of their life. Why would Zac care about life, if he hasn't experienced the horror of death? All he ever was taught was the "Spiderman" lesson, but Peter Parker had to go through the death of his Uncle to realize what that meant.
(and yeah, my parents are dead thing is whatever, but I've seen plenty of "dead parent" characters in DnD that aren't complete edgelords, and have expanded into great characters)
The thing with dead parents is that, sometimes it's done because "Oh, whoa is me," and sometimes it's done, so they character can be alone.
While having a family is fine, Zac's situation would have made his parents a focal point for conflict.
In fact, if they didn't put it in his background, we could have very well read the tragedy occur as it's on color text. His parents never left Zaun which means they were constantly under threat of Takeda.
But despite the dead parent thing, Zac's overall character has not changed in the least. In fact, all they really did was flesh out the background and changed up what happened to the scientists that adopted him.
I will say, I think I would prefer we not do the dead parents thing. Must that always be motivation? Still, this isn't the WORST thing I've ever read, and I like Zac as a character a lot, so I'm not too down about it.
I actually think living parents could have been an interesting thing for Zac (kinda like superman's adoptive parents sort-of-deal) but eh, I'll allow it, I guess.
So MANY champs' origin stories are dead parents tho, I hope we can like, chill on that for a bit.
Riot is starting to become Disney-esque in their adoration of killing moms, only Riot likes to keep it gender-equal and kill both your parents!
While it's certainly better written than his old lore (you genuinely could've summed up his original lore in 4 sentences and lost nothing.) I really feel throwing in tragedy for the sake of it wasn't really necessary at all. As several others in this thread have stated the tragedy just seems thrown in arbitrarily because every Champion has to have tragedy in their lore these days. Zac standing a mile out from the crowd as the "everything can work out if you try" hero is what endeared me to him. Now we have a "things don't work out but try anyway" hero and it's most definitely not the same. He does not need to be Bat-Goo-Man.
So I've heard Janna's story is fine.
Guess for every good story there are two stories that turn their protagonist's personality upside-down.
