A tale of love and sorrow.

Totally unrelated to LoL, but perhaps some young men could learn from my life mistakes, as I presume many of us gamers share similar personalities.

Today I am a 28year old living alone. Historically I was never outgoing, but I was always able to snag the girl I pursued. 6years ago I messaged a girl on facebook that I have never met before. That girl is now my ex-fiance and my daughters mother. Anywho, boys and girls , meaningful relationships are made through time and experience together as friends. Meeting girls over social media is always opting to choose a relationship with an expiration date, because you lack the initial bonds of friendship and social experiences together. When I met her, I had everything going for me, I was actually a pretty nice catch. I was a good guy, I was a Sergeant in the National Guard, and I had a career outside of the military. This woman broke me down into nothing over the course of 4-5 years. It started with the first time she cheated. And btw, cheaters always cheat. She cheated ruthlessly on everyone before me, and she cheats on her now fiance on a daily basis. Anyways, after the first time she cheated, or atleast got caught cheating, it made me lose trust in her, for forever. But, I stayed because she was pregnant, and quite frankly ridiculously attractive. Still the stress generated from not trusting her whittled me away. I had chronic migraines, would miss days at work. And then It got worse, I realized she was having affairs around my work schedule, which she currently does to her new fiance as well...this caused me to quit my job so she couldn't go behind my back while I'm at work. I didn't re-enlist with the guard. I was no longer self sufficient and now dependent on her. Also, the reason I stayed through all of this, was a few reasons. One, I loved her, two we had a daughter together, and three, that daughter is severely disabled having both autism and down syndrome. I love my daughter, but she will be a 4year old for the entirety of her life, and this will make mine and her mothers life difficult for forever. I felt like we had to work things out, I know, as a man I had no choice. I am no longer a catch. I gave up my career, I now work a 15/hr job just scraping by, and I have the baggage of a child that will be a child for forever. I am completely undesirable aside from physical and sexual attractions, but those don't matter as much as having somone to bond with. I had to make it work. I had to try, and I did try. Its hard to say if it was worth it. This woman gave red flags from the moment I met her, but I was thinking with my wiener and now here I am. Alone, likely forever. As of a week ago I discovered my baggage, isnt actually mine. My 5year old daughter is in fact, somone else's. I have sacrificed my life taking care of somone else's child. I do love her and I won't stop being her father, but no matter if I have forgiven her mother for the past. These things haunt me everyday of my life. I have gone through periods where I thought suicide was the best option. But id never actually go through with it. Life goes on, I still have purpose no matter how unhappy I am. Don't be like me lads, don't think with your wiener. Go ahead and hookup with that pretty girl that you know for a fact is a bunch of scandalous bad news...but don't tie yourself down to her. You'll only regret it in the end.

See you on the rift.

Also don't kick yourself. Its not because of you. People who cheat are perpetually unhappy with themselves and need to seek recognition and validation through other people. It doesnt matter how perfect you are, their insecurities will always push them to cheat until they finally learn to love themselves rather than needing the love of everyone around them inorder feel good about themselves.

Everyone has baggage. Some has more than others.

The thing is, it depends on what you do with those bags.

Some light theirs up. Some abandon them. Some take care of them. Some completely switch bags.

The question is: How will you take care of your bags?

  1. Your daughter isn't yours. Therefore, not your responsibility.

-What would you like to do?

  1. Your ex cheated on you, but is now someone else's problem. Therefore, also not your responsibility.

-What would you like to do?

For 1), you can either A) Bounce or B) Stay. A) means the little girl loses out on any potential chance at happiness in her life, but you are free financially and emotionally from someone that is dependent on you. B) You are bogged down with responsibility and extreme patience and undying love to a very dependent child that does not biologically belong to you. However, you lose out on the unspeakable joy that only a parent knows with having a child.

For 2), you can either A) Harbor bitterness and negativity for your ex until the day you die or B) Let it go and focus your energy elsewhere. A) means you'll continue physical and emotional stresses for as long as you live, destroying your chance at happiness B) Accept that you made a stupid mistake, but you're only 28 yo and still have a whole left of life ahead of you to create things that you've always dreamed of.

Life doesn't stop when you turn 21, 30. 50, or even 90yo. Life only stops when you take your last breath (whether it is physically or emotionally).

Some people choose to take the easy way out (e.g. drugs, alcohol, suicide, etc) because they don't want to face the unknown, whether it may be good or bad in the future (no one knows).

Some people choose the hard way and fight tooth and nail back (e.g. never giving up, despite multiple detours, twists, and even setbacks) for a life that they know they want and deserve (they know it will happen, despite the future not yet unfolding).

When you set yourself up for failure, you'll fail (e.g. negative thoughts, staying at a job you hate until you retire, etc).

When you set yourself up for success, you'll succeed (e.g. positive thoughts, changing small things in your life into positive ones until you are running towards a bright future).

Ask yourself: What would you like to do?

I fear what I want is a combination of stupid, impossible, and pointless.

What I really want is for my ex to grow up and come back home so we can be a family again. But what's the point without trust. I probably should have put it in there somewhere that the person she cheats with everyday is me...which pretty effectively keeps me some kind of attached to her. I have contemplated walking away from everything since I am positive its the only way I can move on from her. But I don't want to be that "deadbeat dad" stereotype. I know its what's best for me, but its not what's best for my daughter or her mom.

Some words of wisdom for you: You can't change others; only yourself.

When you ex decides to change, she will do so. However, how long it takes is up to her. The sad thing is, most people won't change at all. And it doesn't sound like she is going to any time soon.

What you are left with is A) Are you willing to tolerate the emotional/physical stress that comes with waiting, despite knowing that she may never change? or B) Change your own thought patterns into more healthier ones and move on.

If you choose A), you've made your bed and now you must sleep in it.

If you choose B), set healthy boundaries and respect for yourself. That means, stop cheating with her and move on. You don't necessarily have to remove yourself from your daughter's life. You just need stop feeding into the BS of her terrible actions.

As for the whole 'deadbeat dad' stereotype, how are you one, when you aren't even your daughter's biological dad? If anything, you're probably a sucker who got roped into taking care of another man's kid for free.

Also, is there no other way to be a dad to your daughter, while also keeping your ex at a friendly arm's length outside of continuing to cheat with her and going through cycles of abuse?

Part of growing up and having a healthy life involves taking care of yourself. Since no one else is watching for you, it's up to yourself to make decisions that would improve your quality of life. Sometimes it's okay to make selfish choices to preserve your own sanity and health.

eh I was there for everything. I thought I was the one who got her pregnant. Made it home from deployment 20minutes before she pooped out Felicity. was there for all the health complications and disability concerns. was there for her open heart surgery when she was 6months old. ive taken her to school everyday since she started preschool 2years ago. everyone and her, know me as her father, biological or not. If I were to walk away, I would be perceived as a deadbeat. no one cares about DNA nowadays, women can do no wrong and expectations of men are to always take the moral highground.

It is a tough choice. Do whats best for me, and have a chance at a new life. or Do whats best for everyone else. It is a noble cause atleast...
