How many champions should I play?

First of all, thank you. This is a request I have never seen a request for. Most people tend to ask how to play a champion, what items are strong or what order to clear the jungle. But I have a different problem, stemming further out in perspective.

There are actually five parts to this question, and I want the community opinions.

1: How many champions should I play on a regular basis, "main" so to speak.

2: What is a good balance to know a lot about many champions, but still get focused practice on a select few.

3: How many roles should I play, and should I regularly practice a champion or two for every role.

4: Should I play champions I am more familiar with over counter-picking.

5: Should I have a primary champion to dedicate multiple rune/mastery pages to.

Discuss. Thank you.

  1. You should only really main one champion, however you should be familiar/comfortable with somewhere between 6 and 8. This allows you to be flexible and reduces the chances of losing all of your picks to bans or teammates. Your main is someone that you are so comfortable on you can play them against any matchup effectively.

  2. Basically you should know what every champion can do. You should play them in bots or normals one or two times to see what they struggle with. There is more than enough youtube footage to assist you with the basics of every champion. But learning their weaknesses often means having to feel those vulnerabilities for yourself. On your main champs it's important to learn to adapt to unfavorable or even favorable matchups. This can only be done through repetition.

  3. To climb you only need to know two roles. Playing other roles will give you important experience, but I personally feel it shouldn't be a priority.

  4. Yes

  5. Try to find a class of champions that all perform well with your multiple rune pages. Failing that yes, try to have pages dedicated to different matchups and situations for your main.
