When you use Irelia's ultimate in a team fight for healing, it basically gives you nothing.
I had an Irelia round recently where I was able to land multiple Champion hits with Transcendent Blades with one ult (i.e. more than 10 total hits), and I had a Spirit Visage. Despite all that, I only healed about 250-ish total. Wow, what a gyp. And this was in late-game too.
In fact, this lackluster healing happens all the time with Irelia's ult. You fire it into an entire team, with multiple hits, and what do you get out of it? Zilch healing. Why? Because of ARMOR.
Since Irelia heals 25% of whatever damage Transcendent Blades deals vs Champions, it frequently gets reduced massively by base armor values, to say nothing of enemies who stack armor. You'd be lucky to heal anything above 300 health with a level 3 ult.
"Just use it on minions!"
That is the abuse case, and just makes Irelia obnoxious in lane. She already has good lane sustain with Hiten Style; why should she have good minion-based sustain on a powerful wave-clear tool and bad sustain vs Champions with that same tool?
"Stop using it for sustain in fights; it's only meant for Sheen procs."
If that was the case, why did it have that heal to begin with?
I'd like to propose two changes to Irelia's ultimate.
- Remove the healing from minions entirely.
- Change the healing vs Champions to a flat heal.
This removes the obnoxious lane-sustain her ult gives, and only preserves it as a lane-clearing weapon. At the same time, making it heal flat amounts vs Champions makes it so armored opponents don't weaken Irelia's combat heal. The maximum potential heal value could be reduced as a result, but at least the consistency in team fights would drastically go up.
I can accept Irelia's ult dealing crappy damage, but not having crappy healing in team fights.
