Rod of Ages should upgrade at max stacks and level 18 to a new item

darkdill··162 votes·9,809 views

When you hit level 18, RoA's passive basically becomes worthless. Let's change that, shall we?

I say that when RoA is fully upgraded and you hit level 18, it transforms into a new item I'll call "Scepter of Eternity". Scepter of Eternity would give you 10-20 more AP and change the passive to restore your health and mana over time on kill/assist (does not stack).

Good idea or bad idea?

I'd do it differently. I'd make it so that after it's fully stacked, a kill/assist restored 2% of max health and mana (partly to be consistent with the +200). This would be pretty similar to the Catalyst passive and is only a very small situational buff.

kanacho11 votes

Yeah, I think giving % recovery over time would be a good idea. Also if you get multiple kills and assists within the duration, all it would do is reset the restoration duration instead of stacking (that could prove to be too strong).

I agree with the % health but not with the %mana gain only becuase all ap mages build athens anyways and would put RoA+Athens as permanent blue buff

Most AP Mids don't even build RoA.

They would after such buff

I main mid Morgana a lot and I always build RoA, an update on it would be really nice.

have it regen it over the span of say 4-6 seconds and have it reset the regen time should you get another kill/assist in the time frame, essentially giving u a burst of regen in a team fight to help you live after you remove their carry

Does RoA REALLY need to be stronger than it already is? Tank AP are already strong. Ryze, Maokai and Gragas (plus others) really don't need any buffs.

FantasySniper7 votes

These champs are problems anyways. Ryze specifically is getting stalked by the nerf bat as we speak.

clickhead2 votes

His win rate is one of the lowest since the Q nerf; Ryze is now a very situational pick.

OyddAWqJ5r2 votes

It really doesn't. This is more of a way to make use of a passive that is worthless at level 18. I'd say it's fine as is but if not then RoA can have it's own "XP bar" that acts as a way to proc the passive past level 18.

But more AP or any stats at all on it are definitely not needed.

Yandere Carry1 votes

ryze is a bullshit champ that gains damage by building pure tank and has no skillshots. He is the problem not RoA. I would like to specifically point out that RYZE being op is why banshee's veil got nerfed. Which did nothing but screw over more mr items.

Gragas isn't op.

Maokai isn't op.

RoA isn't some god item.

That sounds quite good, it would solidify some AP champions as splitpushers as well, win a duel, earn some regen that AD would get 10 times more anyway from lifestealing creeps.

At max stacks, RoA gains a new passive: "On kills and assists, regenerate 5% of your max HP and 5% of your Max MP over 10 seconds. Does not stack, subsequent kills and/or assists refresh the duration."

A fully charged RoA should have you at around 2k hp, healing about 100hp, almost as much as a red pot. Prevents you from hyper killing after one kill by giving you back resources over time, but gives you just enough to scrap up stragglers if you're in a tight spot.

AsphodelNext1 votes

Um, what champion builds RoA and only has 2k hp? It gives 650 by itself at max stacks. Even ADC's who don't build any health can get to about 2k. I'd say more reasonable is like 3k or 4k at fully stacked.

Gavran2 votes

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_champions%27_health

There is not one champion that would get to 3k with only RoA as a health item. Though there isn't one that would be under 2k either. You're way off with 4k though. It's hard to get health that high. I just played an ARAM as double RoA + Rylai's Karthus and wasn't that high over 3k.

I think 2.3-2.6k is probably a fair health estimate for champions that build RoA. Maybe 3k for the ones that are primary tanks (Singed primarily comes to mind.) Your Swains and Karthii don't get the luxury of lots of health items.

AsphodelNext2 votes

Okay, fair enough, for 4k I was thinking of Cho'gath, who I run RoA on all the time, and based it off what I normally have with him, forgetting he has Feast stacks. Since I always get a health/MR item(SV/Veil/Aegis), I typically end games with 4k+ HP, almost 5k sometimes. But other tanky casters without health steroids should definitely be able to get to around 3k. 2k is just unreasonably low, though.

The only thing is, RoA is already SO gold efficient, buffing it in any way is pretty unnecessary. The base stats are already gold efficient when you purchase it right off the bat, and then it scales into one of the very most gold efficient items in the game.

ProfDrDeath6 votes

Not really necessary.

From its stats alone, a fully leveled RoA is worth 4773 gold, or 170.5% of its cost. For the relative worth, it is only second to Muramana, and has absolutely the highest amount of stats/slot.

And most other items have like up to 135% gold efficiency on their stats alone.

SouL1ess5 votes

Good thing

Will support and purchase in-game

Hayaishi5 votes

Oh yes we definitely need to buff AP itemization and have Maokai go from impossible to kill to god mode.

Rebonack5 votes

Do we really want Tree, Pudge, and Ryze to get an item buff?

AbodyHUN6662 votes

I don't remember Pudge throwing barrels :D

AetherKingdom5 votes

I'd accept the restore health on kills/assist having like a 20/30 second cooldown, increased effects over 10 seconds, and no more AP. I'd rather not have Rod having large buffs, but QOL like this is fine.

AtheosisX5 votes

I don't really see the need for this. RoA is already quite good and is purchased regularly on many champs.

ModCaptainMårvelous4 votes

I like the idea, although I'm worried about the power of the passive considering even though RoA's passive is useless at level 18, it's still a VERY GOOD ITEM if you get it early.

650 HP/Mana and 80 AP is an amazing item, honestly.

Luckmaker4 votes

Drop the 20ap and I agree with you.

ofart4 votes

With the Nexus turrets even hitting like wet-noodles and all these insane buffs for pushing from Dragon and Baron, games tend to be a lot shorter in my experience. The snowballing nature of dragon stacks guarantees this.

Shorter games make RoA weaker because it delays your powerspike and thus game influence but you now have less time to make use of it when it's stacked. A small buff of some kind certainly makes sense.

GreenLore3 votes

I think letting it restore some mana or health upon kill could be good(I don't think it should get more ap),but it shouldn't be too much, because like many here already point out,it does give you already a lot.

Migrañaboy3 votes

Nah, would become the FoTM item.

From wikia calculations: The base stats are 121.6% gold efficient, without the passive. The item is 170.5% gold efficient at max stacks.

You would need to compensate.

voozers3 votes

I agree the stat boost is unnecessary but changing the healing passive would be nice to something that can be useful for a level 18 champion. The healing after a kill/ assist sounds pretty modest.

Kinkou Order3 votes

Does not need to happen for any reason.

it is more then cost effective for what it offers by nearly 2K gold when fully stacked

1733 gold value for 650 health 1300 gold value for 650 mana 1740 gold value for 80 AP

You are getting 4773 gold value in stats from one item slot for 2800 gold.

If anything this item needs to be nerfed.

juaumzitus2 votes

I'm against the extra ap because Rylais just got changed because of how it resembled ROA, but the kill/assist is very good, since it will have to be the same healing and over the same duration.

kDrakari2 votes

Rod of Ages already pretty much transitions from an early game sustain item from the catalyst passive to an efficient tanky-mage item through the stacking passive, but if you wanted a name change at full stacks I don't see why not (or necessarily why, but I don't have a problem with it). It would need a nerf if you intended to add any beneficial passive to the transformed version, but I wouldn't mind it too much. Again, I don't think it's necessary and think any big change to it would likely ruin some champions' standard builds while potentially creating new ones, but with reduced raw stats exchanged for some better late-game regen I think it could still be fine.

Cindikle2 votes

It's already insanely efficient.

Giving it buffs anywhere would just make it need nerfs down the road.

Artilleryfrost2 votes

well roa is already one of the most gold efficent items in the game when fully stacked i dont think it should be buffed.

Yes, we totally need to buff one of the most powerful items for Tanky AP characters. Hell, I heard that somebody once tried to play a non-AP melee character top! What a noob, amirite?

Items turning into other items usually means they gain an ability of some sort. Seeker's Armguard doesn't turn into a bigger armguard-y item just because it hits mx stats. Rengar's necklace changes icon when it reaches certain points and gains additional abilities. Since RoA doesn't really change at max stats, it just has... well, max stats, there's not need for it to become a new item.

If it gained a new effect to replace the hp/mana gains upon leveling up, sure, a new item would communicate this quite well. But at max stats, it's already 170% gold efficient, so there's really no need to add anything to it.

That's a horrible comparison. SA doesn't gain stats or stacks over time or through any means possible. A better comparison would be Archangel's Staff/Seraph's Embrace, which is what I'm pretty sure OP was basing their idea off of. The passive is 100% useless after you hit level 18, which is why they want it to change once you hit level 18 and max stacks.

Unique: Killing a unit grants 0.5 bonus armor and ability power. This bonus stacks up to 30 times.

The Mages don't need more buffs. Maybe a temporary shield upon a kill. That's a nice reward for a good play, makes pentakills more possible.

Rod of ages as many people have pointed out in the thread is one of the most gold efficient items. The changes you suggest does not change the power of RoA too much until late game, where on AP tanks it would at like a large boost as the health gain increases the total damage they can endure during a teamfight. Now depending on the % restore it would either be so small that it did almost nothing or at the point where it makes RoA to strong. An idea is to keep the catalyst protector passive but allow you to trigger it on some sort of cooldown once you hit level 18 but this too I feel would make RoA far to strong an item.

Zondervain1 votes

A Karthus buff....?

Yes please!

scotticorn1 votes

Maybe giving health/mana regen after hitting level 18 would be nice as a passive. I think it falls off late game personally--even if it's considered cost-efficient. Most RoA champs build tear as well giving the item an extra 20 AP in stats. This gives the same amount of damage as Rylais but with +250HP (1 AA from an ADC). Giving the extra regen will make it synergize well with AP tank itemization.

Esdeath Desu1 votes

A lot of the champions who build ROA don't really need buffs... I mean, Morgana? Seriously? She's already incredibly strong. This would be an indirect buff to her, and Annie, and Gragas... And it would also be core on almost everyone in ARAM. Not saying we should balance around ARAM but still.
