Each champion/role has a different responsibility in a team fight. The key is to identify what your champion is strongest at and capitalizing on those strengths.
Nautilus, for example, may be used as an initiator, but he is a much better peeler. That's why you see him as a support so often now. He is amazing at protecting his carry, while his intiation lacks any follow up damage to cause any real threat.
Malphite, on the other hand, has elite initiation, but is a below average peeler.
For those reasons, two champions who seem to have similar roles in a team fight are probably better off not performing the same responsibilities.
Similarly, LeBlanc and Veigar both have incredible burst damage to instantly delete 1 character with relative ease. Logically, that would mean that they could both perform the same responsibility of bursting the highest priority enemy. However, LeBlanc has escapes built into her kit to allow her to swoop in, kill a champion and possibly get out. Veigar has no escapes and if he tries to flash + combo the adc, he'll almost assuredly die, even if he ended up with the kill.
Two champions who seem to perform the same type of role, but need to be used completely differently during teamfights.
Team fighting, as well as recognizing your champion's optimal role in a team fight, is what separates good players from great players.
Me too, as soon as a fight breaks out with more than 4 people.. I freak out and I just blast spells everywhere, tank support adc.. I have no idea.
I get FPS drops and just mash buttons until everything is over
