Revamp the Honor-initiative to decrease toxicity and make for a more fun Game-environment

So, it's been months since I've last seen someone with a Honor badge and I haven't been using the system myself, seeing that it doesn't feel really Impactful and doesn't seem to do its job to reward other players for their great attitude or teamplay.

League has had this stigma to it, saying that the community might just be the most toxic in gaming history and sometimes the game environment can feel really hostile, especially to new players. I personally feel in order for the community to grow through interacting in the game itself the Honor initiative has to be revamped.

We already nerd out about Fanart, Cosplay and other stuff, League being a great basis to socialize and express yourself but in game this kinda falls short at times due to the lack of initiative to actually interact with fellow players- "OMG NOOB JUNGLER NO GANKS" Is a lot more common than maybe friendly banter or tips and I feel this could easily be fixed if we were to revamp the Honor initiative to actually reward shining examples of the league community.

Just like Overwatch the end screen should entail some High-End stats and a few medals you could distribute to your team, giving them the usual stuff like "Friendly", "Teamwork" but also "MVP", "Shotcaller" but also funny stuff like "Humorous" or simply "Funky Playstyle" for that one Singed top that made the game look like a frigging circus.

The System is outdated, yes and there needs to be some actual reasons to actually award players. Badges, more Hextech crafting components and more would help people actually want to Honor and give them a reason to socialize and see the other players for what they are: Human beings.

Any other ideas on how to improve this outdated function with so much untapped potential?

I think all we need to do for now is make it visible and see what happens. Right now, honor system is a bit hidden.

At least in the legacy client, you have to actually look for the buttons and you don't get a notification that you've been honor'd until you leave the post-game stats screen. In Overwatch, you get clicks that build anticipation every time you get a stack of commend. Then some nice cheery effects and a voice line from your character at some number of stacks. And it feels pretty damn good.

I think just a little cosmetic touch up that gives instant gratification would help a lot.

Whats more is they GIVE something. Its bonus XP, which in turn means a speedier gain of the next level up, and the chest that come with it. It could have a skin, or a play of the game intro, or some other sweet something in it. Playing well, and earning the upvotes rewards you.

The honor system here.... gives something no one cares about.

If you want something to work, you have to give something for it.... if only we could reward people with something in this game...

I dont know... RP? Not even a lot, just maybe 10 RP for X number of honor votes, say every 50? Also let people know what the votes are worth. People who honer everyone should see the honer they can give out diminish to nothing so they stop doing it. Penalize peoples honor if they honor an opponent player that was punished, i.e. honoring an intent feeder for helping you win. Show the receiver how much honer they get, and the giver how much they give.

Let this role over into a reward. Behavior is affected by carrot and stick methods all the time. People play honorably, they can get a carrot. People who dont get a stick.

Riot is too lazy to update champion's VO while doing a VU.

I don't expect them doing anything like Overwatch has, sadly.

Should be able to buy things with honor point things. Maybe certain champions, or like a screen border or whatever.

Wolfram Oxford13 votes

Then everyone would be offering H4H (honor for honor) and the system would be abused.

BatchBustsMeta13 votes

So whats wrong with that?? People still wont honor someone that pissed them off in game.

Giga Kahuna3 votes

what's the point of the honor system if it's only used for people just to give honor so they can get honor

you're supposed to give honor to players you enjoyed playing with rather than for some form of reward

I challenge you to find ANY way to incentivize the honor system without any chance of it being abusable.

Keep in mind you don't see honors earned until after exiting the post-game lobby. If you do try to initiate an "honor 4 honor" deal, there's nothing to stop me from saying "sure" and not actually honoring.

..the same way op is saying to do it, make the honor system more like overwatch's post-game screen

make it blatant what stats / cool things players did and then put the option to honor them right next to the stat, out of the three you can give allies or honorable opponent to enemies

the honor system doesn't need a reward, it just needs to be more obvious. in both clients the honor button is tiny and you have to really want to hand out an honor to even remember it's there, whereas putting up some score cards that could be champion specific, e.g., "(nautilus / thresh / blitz / playername) landed (x amount / x amount out of amount thrown) hooks" or "(soraka / sona / playername) healed near-death teammates (x amount) times", or just universal stats such as damage done / objectives assisted in / etc, would make it more obvious

instead of thinking "all udyr did was split push the entire game he was useless" you'd get a score card of how many turrets he took and think "what the hell he took out seven turrets??" and the option to honor him would be right next to this stat

Guys you can't honour the same person over and over, I assure you it dosen't work, the honour counts alot less towards ribbions if done twice to the same person.

Well perhaps make the honor system only accessible before joining the end-game chat kinda as a pop-up that you won't re-open (i'm thinking about the way you get notified when you get chest or keys)

the weeaboo2 votes

Just only give players like 6 honors a week or something like in Dota

Bolwinkel1 votes

You realize you're limited on how much you can honor someone right? If you honor so much it prevents you to one honor for every few games.

even just hextech-related stuff would be more than good enough

that was what i was thinking, but if it was flex queue you could just have your friends give you a honor point

TheGr8WhiteD1 votes

Just make it give small amounts of champion or skin essence, or maybe even a key fragment. Nothing crazy like an entire chest, but just a small reward giving the impression that Riot is thanking you for making the community a better place to be a part of.

Maybe a pop up prompter at the end of a game, reminding and encouraging players to honor skill, teamwork, helpfulness, stuff like that. As well as a system that allows players to track their progress. Visible rewards for maintaining a badge.

I suggest that they tie it to the hextech crafting system, maybe it will reduce times on chests or reward with keys or essence when you reach a certain count.

nice idea

I don't know about the most toxic, but I do know that Riot makes a big deal out of anything they see as negative behavior. Even if you are saying stuff like "gg" before 20 minutes you run the risk of getting punished and eventually banned. One thing I do kind of want to see though is a kind of low priority queue not only for dodgers but for toxic players.

ninjaroxas3 votes

Its ggez that makes people upset not just gg

Dolasaur2 votes

People on your team saying "gg = I give up" is pretty negative too.

ninjaroxas1 votes

I guess but it's not as bad imo

Wolfram Oxford2 votes

What about that makes them upset?

ninjaroxas1 votes

Think about it like this. Your team just got rolled and you were laneing against the champion you hate the most and at the end that person says ggez. It really depends on how easy you tilt. It can actually tilt me more some times, i don't report them though because im not stupid

Something with the honor system needs to be done. I remember when it first came out people were actually nice and helpful to others. Some time when League wasn't toxic? I know right?

I remember shortly after they added it they made it harder to get honor ribbons. They could start by reverting that.

Another thing that would help is adding something to the end game lobby next to the leave lobby button saying Honor players? Currently you have to click on a tiny button if you wish to honor a player. Add in no real benefit in doing this and you have no reason to do it. Or perhaps making players have a popup screen once they return to the lobby asking to select a player to receive honor.

If they were to have a end of season reward for being in the top 25% of players with honor rating (honor rating is not based on how many honor you but the % of the time you get honored and have a set minimum of total to get a ribbon) that might also be of use. Say there was a skin offered at the end of the season for most honorable players like there is a victorious skin for all gold and higher players that might promote better behavior.

The real challenge however is making players remember to give honor and making group farming of honor minimally impactful or completely ineffective.

I really like the Overwatch system and I don't even play Overwatch, but I've seen that everyone can be honored for everything from most damage dealt to most healing done to allies and as a supp main I think that's so awesome to have the opportunity for others to see that what you did in the game WAS impactful and not just another disposable role they threw onto summoners rift for shits and giggles because supports are always doing so much more than anyone realizes (if they're a good one, that is). But yeah this is a dope idea, I like this.

didnt even kno OW had a honor system. I guess that's how useless it is.

Whoa what are these badge things?

seriously I'm kinda new and I've never seen these in my life.

SSJTribe2 votes

They're the honor badges, and you get one if you receive enough honors from players not on your friends list. (Blue is Helpful, Red is Honorable Opponent, etc.)

rtbf2256182412 votes

The tricky part is to make it unabusable. I think they have ideas but they don't have the solution against cheating the system because Honoring someone doesn't take system detection in the play.

sangesland2 votes

make the badges visible ingame. between the name and healthbar perhaps? there's already a gap there.

Envoy of Melody1 votes

You have better chances of getting a 'Reported' Badge these days. If anyone cares enough to hover over your name after a game, it's just to be a dickhead and report you for the most ridiculous reasons.

My fix is to give 1RP for every badge you get per game (capped at 5). That is enough incentive for people to start doing it even thou it takes forever to farm a skin (but youc an farm ip boost on aram and other stuff that cost 75rp pretty fast)

If they don't like the idea of giving RP they could give orange essence at a similar rate or mayeb a tad more

Kinjishi2 votes

Getting RP from honor is enough for people to use it without any real reason, but to farm RP. Maybe a different approach that can't be so easily abused?

RogueWill1 votes

Well...you wouldn't give RP to people that wasn't nice to you. So even if for self interest they woudl be somewhat nice

Kinjishi3 votes

Oh, people would be forming clubs/chat rooms just to queue up and farm RP. While I like thinking that people would use it properly (and some would), there are more that would abuse the crap out of it.

RogueWill1 votes

people used to think the same about the free chest and it got fixed with the cap riot put. Maybe give RP the first games and IP the rest and give a min of time the match would need to last (say 30 min). That should reduce the abusers considerably.
