Dynamic Que - Variance is a btch

IAmWoralo··119 votes·4,905 views

There is a saying in poker statistics that goes 'Variance is a bitch'. What is variance and how does it affect LOL. Variance is the fluctuation in expected value of a certain probability factor. For instance when you flip a coin with equal sides and equal weight distribution the odds of it landing on one side is exactly 50%, but when flipping this coin 10 or 100 times they will not land on each side exactly 5 or 50 times. The result might actually be 3/7 or 40/60. Increasing the amount of tosses will decrease the variance factor. If you toss the coin long enough you will eventually get a 50% Probability of the coin landing on either side.

So how does this affect league of legends? Let's say you are a very skilled player who never feeds, never tilts and had a perfect connection so you are never disconnected either. This alone will give you an edge in the game and it will actually make you climb, because there is a 4/5 chance that your team has feed/tilt/dc and there is a 5/5 chance the enemy team will have one of these 'symptoms'. But people keep saying they only have feeders and AFK on their team and that's the reason they lose. This can be possible due to variance. If you play 10 games or even 100 the odds of being struck by variance are pretty high because of the small amount of games. Yes 100 games is pretty much but in raw data 100 games is a small number and it's highly likely to be influenced by variance.

Okay now we know what that is, but what's so different with this season and dynamic que. I myself have noticed that my winning and losing sprees seem to be much longer. Where last season I lost 4 or 5 games in a row, I can now easily lose or win 10 to 12 in a row without any apparent reason. This is where variance comes in again, because the variance factor has changed due to dynamic que.

Former solo que In the past you had a maximum of 2 players co-op in ranked solo que and when you played with a premade you always(not sure if it's 100%) got a premade on the other team as well. This also created a small variance fluctuation due to role differences in premade match ups. For instance when your premade is a duo bot the odds of them winning a game is higher when the enemy premade is for instance a support / top duo. (not saying that this is fact, but hypothetically certain premade teams work better than others). Eventually the odds even out. You will play as much games with a premade bot as the enemy team will, but the amount of time/games will increase before these odds to even out.

Dyanmic que This is where things get messy. The major increase in variance comes from the amount of premade possibilities. Let's talk hypotheticalls, not wanting to make false assumptions I am just going to speculate. Let's say a 3 man premade plays Junge / Mid / ADC against a Top / Mid / Support 3 man premade. Now I would speculate that the first group has an edge if they communicate through Skype or whatever. I think that most premades will have a slight edge when they have a jungler in their team and I think most premades have a slight disadvantage when they have a support in their premade. Again just speculating, I don't know the actual numbers. As said before, in the long run your odds of having a good premade is just as likely as your enemy having it, but the likelyhood of it happening on short term decreases and so variance increases by a lot. All these different possibilities of premade compositions makes dyanmic que a lot more susceptive for variance and thus increasing the possible lenght of winning or losing sprees and ofcourse almost none of us are as perfect as we want to be so this variance in itself also increases the likelyhood of us tilting / raging etc.

This also explains why people that were former gold / plat are now in silver and former silver players are now all of the sudden in gold. This can all happen because in this season barely anyone has reached enough games yet to be able to even out the odds. But this is where I think Riot is dropping the ball for players that cannot play 1000 games per season, this means that if you do not play dedicated your rank is just simply a presentation of luck and a little bit of skill. Yes a diamond player will still crush silver and low gold games, but when it comes to single tier differences, the game is more prone to luck than we would want it to be.

Consider your role I would love to see the numbers but all I can relate to are my own statistics which are not enough to make any good assumption, but I will speculate again. Last season I strugled as support to maintain a positive winrate, on my best support champions I was around 55% winrate, but on my other lanes (jungle / mid) I got roughly 60%+ winrate with my main champions. This season things seem to be a bit different. unless I just found a magical way to increase my support skills over night, something else must be going on, because right now almost all of my support champions are easily getting a 60%+ winrate. So that got me thinking. Maybe it's because I play 90% solo and when I play support and I am teamed up with premades, my role works effecient enough with them for us to win games, but when I pick jungle and they enemy team has a jungle premade, they have the edge when ganking etc.

If you only play a certain role, like jungle or support and you always play solo, your odds will never even out, you will always have that (dis)advantage because your team will never have that premade while the enemy team does. So I would say, make use of that information.

Last but not least - keep your head up Ranked can feel pretty random right now. One game you're playing your main awesome and you got 9/0 at the 12 minute mark, the other game you're 0/6 before the 20 minute mark and you just don't understand how it's possible. Don't let it get to you. If you are a solo player remember, when the enemy team has a 3+ player comp it is extremely easy for them to coördinate a gank / dive on you and before you know it things spiral out of control. Even bot lane seems to get picked off more these days, at least that's my experience going from a 6.0 KDA to a 4.0 KDA with Janna form last season to this one.

Just remember that in some situations there is not much you can do. Keep an eye out for your minimap, now more than ever. Things have changed and variance is a bitch.

I wonder what you guys think.

Did you even read it? It came across as "if you premade with the wrong roles you make it more likely that you will lose."

T RexHasTinyArms4 votes

It is also hard to figure out the influence bc they chose to introduce new champ select at the same time as DQ. DQ impacts variance of teams, but so does new champ select. They are confounding variables for each other and probably new champ select should have been introduced first then DQ later but would have meant coding more stuff and not been worth the clarity in riots opinion probably.

IAmWoralo6 votes

That's a very valid point you're making, I haven't considered that, but you do have to realise that both teams have the same champion pool and everyone has (dis)advantages from pick order etc and these things do cause a small factor of variance but this evens out quicker and was pretty much the same in the old champ select. To favour this champion select over the other you could state that people are getting the roles they want to play now so that would mean the overal skill in games goes up and therefor it would mean variance would actually go down.

not sure about this hypothesis but I don't think new champ select is a major factor in this.

T RexHasTinyArms3 votes

Yeah, I was mostly saying new champ select changes variance. I think it is a complex enough variable it is hard to predict if variance goes up or down, and I would hypothesize that it is probably up for some down for others. If you tilt when you're in an off role variance is down. If you refused to learn basics of support or would troll when last pick and given support, variance is down bc you play more consistent and less troll. If you played fill or were good at working with your team to keep the children calm, variance is up bc your influence on the game is less now that no one benefits from you covering a role they don't play as well. It changes dynamics of team interaction, game knowledge needed to play, and the average skill of certain roles, so it should change the environment in a substantial way that is moderating the impact of DQ currently.

IAmWoralo1 votes

I'm not sure I understand what you mean because varience affects everyone and doesn't correspond with playstyle unless your playstyle changes dramaticly for some reason. For instance you tilt more because you have longer losing sprees. It has effect on your winning and losing games, but it has no effect on varience I think.

Simple explenation if you tilt your team has a 5/5 chance of having someone in it that has a probability of tilting if you don't tilt that chance is 4/5, but that has no influence on the game's varience only on your personal elo growth expectation.

The post is about the system not about individual results having an effect on games. At the end of the season most people will probably be where they belong, but I think that proces should be much quicker.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

So I may understand variance wrong from my poker days but my understanding was that it was deviation from expected probability. I think I'm mixing variance and EV actually (expected value for anyone reading this who didn't know). Either way new champ select would affect both, although more on the EV side in things I was thinking of. The variance piece would be that some forms of variance are removed now. Like in the past if you play 3 roles there is some probability that the random assignment of players will be missing someone who mains the last two roles. Now in theory that shouldn't happen. So it removes variance of how close to the expected rate teams are able to cover all roles/not do that (which would be both system and player dependent I believe bc there is some probability of not covering all 5 roles given random players bc even if you play everything you cannot cover more than one role, but also a player who cannot support would have a team missing a role more often than average bc people were more willing to force last pick to support than force them to say ADC).

What I was thinking of mostly though was more EV than variance, so thank you for pointing it out. The new select and dynamic que both influence the expected value of skill sets and so introducing them both at the same time makes it harder to tell what and how much they influence. I think that is the weirdest part of the new ranked; not entirely knowing what the influence of the change was.

IAmWoralo1 votes

EV expected value is indeed a term used in chance calculations and a major factor in poker. but EV in poker is usually the outcome based on a single event, for instance the chance of winning a certain hand. Variance is the fluctuation of EV. So your EV might be +1.20 but when you played 10 hands with a +1.20 EV and the numbers outcome is actually more like +1.10, you have a variance or deviation of 0.10.

In poker they say you need about 50.000 to 100.000 hand to be able to make a semi good interpretation of your playstyle, however it's still very much possible that there is a big variance in these 100.000 hands giving a misrepresentation of your actual performance and that's what I mean by the variance in League. For instance Janna has a 53% winrate(just an example I cba to look it up right now) but you might have got 60% due to whatever. If you take away the skill factor and solely base it on statistics and asume you are the most average player off them all that's a variance or 7%.

T RexHasTinyArms1 votes

Yeah I understand the concepts, I just haven't played much poker recently and was confusing them. I played poker to win enough beer money to keep me supplied freshman and sophomore year of college. It wasn't a ton, but I got sober at 20, so it was a consistent habit at the time and I had to understand the game well enough to have a consistent income from it.

The piece I was messing up was that if you increase or decrease EV (say a player is great one trick on a champ that can play mid/top but nothing else, their win rate should have gone up with the new select that lets them only play mid/top) for an individual but the system stays at the same number it doesn't mean variance has changed any, just that enough other players had opposite changes in EV so it didn't change system balance.

Although as a thought question can you check my logic on the following (and explain if I mess it up):

So in poker a table that is mostly loose aggressive players should have a higher variance than a table that is a lot of tight passive players bc more money goes in the pot more often and there is more action in general with the looser table right? So by changing the environment you could in theory change the variance in the short run (bc over a million hands it may balance out, but in the short run playing bigger pots means that going all in with the over pair vs a flush draw that sucks out on the river is a bigger variance bc it is a bigger swing of money) or am I missing something?

IAmWoralo1 votes

No because playstyle is not relevant to the outcome. I am not sure how the likelyhood of someone calling is measurable, maybe it is maybe it's not I never really cared for EV in poker as I prefered to play mostly live games and play with feeling not hard statistics. Anyway I believe that the outcome or EV is just based on the cards and not the players, so whether a player is LAG or TAG doesn't matter much I think, maybe they have some standard EV deviations for these kinds of players but I'm not sure.

The deviation in league for being on tilt is probably very high, but it's also something easily cured: Don't do it :P

T RexHasTinyArms2 votes

Yeah, I like live play best too (psychology background, and my win rate is higher bc my reads live are much better, plus I don't multi table well so doesn't change my hand rate much). I will say though that at least the majority of EV calculations I've seen are either guesses for a line, or more often calculations for specific actions. In terms of calculating lines EV is very much changed by play style, which is actually an interesting analogy for league (although in a very different manner than your original topic).

If I check raise a flop (assuming Texas hold 'em) and I have been a very tight player showing down only the best cards, you probably are only calling with decent cards, and are definitely not betting out on the turn unless you're a very weak player. However, if I've been check raising fairly often, sometimes with weaker hands which I folded a couple times to bets on the turn or river, you might call and bet out against me with something that isn't as good as you would want in the first situation. Therefore, in the long run, if I have the absolute best cards that can happen on the flop and know that you have a good but not perfect hand, the EV of check raise changes based on the type of player I am (or am perceived to be). Similarly, getting first blood on a very aggressive snowball champ in league for a player who is good at dueling and split pushing may have a bigger impact than getting first blood on a utility tank player who is great at reading team fights and protecting carries. Even the same play on the same champ (getting a kill as Lee Sin jungle vs Amumu by invading at the first buff) could have different value based on the type of player who makes it (ie do you use the exp lead and gold lead to invade and pressure more, or do you stick to your own jungle mostly after the first invade?).

As support I experience more dives under my turret, possibly by premades. You can chose to bail out and leave your ADC to die for 99% certainty or you can stay and hope you both survive. I leaned more towards option 2 but when I spot a trend I am adapting to option 1.

There there, I decided to climb as fill (support) bronze after inactivity since season 3 for the lels. You'll get there.

All that busted stuff at the start of the season really didn't make it easy for everyone + I have a high chance of screaming internally over the ADC champion choice because I know bronze players are terrible at immobile ADCs.

An interesting post. I agree with you in regards to going vs. pre-mades as a solo support, in lower elo (where I am). I have done well playing supports with heavy peel (how I personally prefer to play) instead of previous seasons where I've had to resort to a dps support in order to climb.

One thing that I do really like about this season is you can focus on improving two rolls very well over maybe focusing on one and being able to half-ass the other four.

For myself, there isn't much better a time in league when I'm support and their jungler ganks bot, their midlaner joins as their top laner ports in. And you and you're adc walk away without dieing (or even better with a kill!).

Well written, bump for visibility. The idea that some players are feeders and some players are Faker is a fallacy. An important fact to remember that wasn't mentioned in the post is that everyone has games where they load a team on their back going 16/2/24 and games where they feed the enemy laner 4 kills in 10 minutes. Even that guy who locked Disco Nunu won a promo sometime in their climb, the fact that he's a troll doesn't mean that he can't occasionally put on his carry pants.

IAmWoralo2 votes

Yes I think we all have games where we 'feed' and most feeders are made out of players that are just like everyone else but they are having a bad matchup or bad day or whatever, just like most flamers and ragers are made out of most of the normal players. And I didn't really leave it out that's why I mentioned that we are all not as perfect as we want ourselves to be.

Serika Zero1 votes

I agree with some things you said, however.

Again just speculating

Assuming you are a premade of 3 or 4. Having a Support as your premade is actually a positive addition. Afterall, most junglers are nothing else but supports as well, support that can survive in the jungle and get more gold. Jungler's role is to "support" their laners by applying pressure on the map. Which can be done by ganking, counter ganking, counter jungling, taking objectives, protecting objectives. Support's initial role is to babysit the adc, the secondary role is to make plays, and third role is to support (peal, protect, empower, etc) the feed member of the team (depending on champion 2nd and 3rd role get reversed).

Now, why its support a much more valuable as a premade than lets say ADC or Mid or Top. Because they can "make plays". Any support, even someone like Nami or Soraka can make plays. Nami can flash stun a target out of position, while Soraka can flash silence the person out of position.

If your support dies with the "play", you can still regroup and protect objectives in 4v5 (Except dragon, usually). But if your mid/adc/top/jungle dies, you lose more. So, support dying, for the team, is an acceptable risk when they can make game winning plays. When you are in a premade of 3 or 4. Its more easy to communicate when you go for such a play, and have your friends follow up (if you don't fuck up). Maybe they can even protect you.

The other reason why support is so important is because supports are the ones building item 2049 item 2045 . Junglers don't get item 3711 as often as they should. So, having vision on the map in crucial areas on the map where you want to play around (like the enemy jungle when you want to do baron) is something that the support usually does. Together with your guys's trinket wards, you should have like 5 wards available, allowing you to light up the area. Something which otherwise you wouldn't be able to do without the support's assistance. This facilitates you doing a risk free baron/dragon/rotation/siege. As well as giving you pick potential on the enemy.

When you are behind, generally you make comebacks by catching people out of position. How you do this? By wards in your jungle. Who has wards that last 3 minutes to facilitates catches? You got it, the support.

Also, winning bot lane. Generally, its something that the support has a very very large impact upon. Personally, I'm a meh adc. But with an amazing support, even our bot lane can win. As its often regarded, supports are support to carry the adcs though the laning phase while the adcs are supposed to "carry" the support though the end game (even though the support does most of the pealing or engaging in late game anyway).

And roaming. When was the last time you saw and ADC roam to another lane and help them? like almost never? Well, supports aren't glued to the bot lane, every now and then they can roam to other lanes and turn the tide of war. I have lost mid lane hard due to a random lv2-3 alistar, nautilius and bard roams a few months ago for not respecting that can happen. And then they can come again later to fuck you harder as if blowing your summoners at lv 2 wasn't enough >.> And what's more, supports can roam together with their jungler to make stuff happen. As such, it was amazingly well if support and jungler are both premades.

Ok, now that I'm done with this. What's left is ADC/Mid/Top. What is better to have a premade out of these 3? The answer is a mid or top laner which has TP. Your goal is to be able to make 4 man gank bot. Assuming your support communicates, we are recalling and we will be back in lane in like 1 minute, going to prepare ward for tp (btw, supports are the ones that usually set wards for tp flanks........ another reason to have support premade). Then as a solo laner, you have enough time to either push your wave hard, start regening mana (if you are low on it), or even recall and make the tp play happen. Its very easy for the adc or even the other solo laner to simply follow up when there's 4 team mates in the lane helping them secure a kill. And maybe take turret + dragon.

Mid should better than Top lane as you can roam together with your jungler much more even without tp. However, this requires you to have mid lane pressure or for the opponent to give you a window for roaming. And since not all mid laners run TP, the impact mid and top can bring is very similar, without a clear winner.

And btw, support is the one that generally protects your team in mid to late game. It doesn't matter that you got an amazing adc, mid and jungler, if your support is unable to engage or peal properly. Your 2 friends will most likely get assassinated or run over by tanks. This happened to me in a solo game recently, was playing Xerath and the ADC was Sivir; in a late game team fight all out team mates jumped forward forgetting us and we got ran down, my by the tank and her by the mid assassin even though we both were feed we were unable to deal with those specific champions and we died and lost team fight.

tl;dr: Support has more value than bot-ADC when you go premades. Especially since you can bring an ADC in other roles.

PS: I'm a mid-top main, played solo and easily climbed back to plat 5 (last season plat4). I'm lucky <3 my general win ratio last season was ~50% for mid and 50% for top. With the exception of Malzahar sitting ~60-70%. This season I have 60% on both of those roles. Oh, also had 80% win ratio on Janna last season over the course of 20 games (can't play other supports than her hehe).

IAmWoralo3 votes

You are missing the point I was trying to make. I was making an example to strengthen my hypothesis. It doesn't matter which premade team is better against which, it just matters that a certain premade is better than another and though this can occur on both teams, the amount of games you need to play before these situations are equaled out takes a long time, thus increasing variance.

SexyGamer1 votes

Hi i am a diamond player and I can say that the "variance factor" is really dumb this season due to dynamic queue. I've made it into diamond 5 but getting back to diamond 3 (I was diamond 3 the past 2 seasons) is MUCH harder this season than previously. Players who are premading with at least 2 other players have a much higher win rate due to the fact that they can coordinate plays better. If you're not in a premade, you'd better be an extremely good player to carry yourself out of your elo.

A couple of tips i can give you guys that are way more relevant this season:

  1. Like the OP said, make sure you're constantly checking your minimap for mias. Be aware of global ults/teleport clds.

  2. Play alot smarter. If you dont have vision of nearby fog of war and theres enemy mias on the map, you better play it safe. Always assume the worst case scenario is happening and that'll make you make less dumb decisions.

  3. Play close attention to champion select. Understand what you're up against and how you need to play your comp against the enemy comp to win. In my opinion, the safest picks right now are teamfight picks or the meta picks with highest winrates. You're dealing with premades and objectives therefore, teamfights are so common. Picking someone like tryndamere/udyr requires you to play these champions with split pushing in mind and you need to play a particular way that may require more effort to succeed.

I can't stress these 3 points enough. I am an ADC/marksman main and I've faced so many games where the main focus of ganks during laning phase on the enemy team were towards bot lane, which i can only assume is due to a higher likelyhood of premades being on the enemy team.

A point for your premades section. If one of them is a shotcaller for the group, it tends to improve your chances (as long as they aren't bad at it). This can compound the advantage if your jungler in your premade shotcalls, and even if a support can shot call effectively, it tends to negate the "negative" effect of them being in a premade.

So the true intention of DQ the whole time was to secretly make it so more people would play supports, without realizing that playing support was DESIRABLE... Hm...

I mean, they probably KNEW solo supports would have a higher win rate... thus making supports more preferable but without letting people know so they wouldn't be in on the secret and flood the queues with supports. To compensate, they just made the "Fill" role secretly a second "Support" role so people would be tricked into playing support.

Illuminati confirmed.

This alone will give you an edge in the game and it will actually make you climb, because there is a 4/5 chance that your team has feed/tilt/dc and there is a 5/5 chance the enemy team will have one of these 'symptoms'.

The maths are strong in this one.

Well, to be honnest a french boarder created a greasemonkey's addon for the forum telling you how many afkers you had in your games for the last 100 ranked games and in which team they were.

I've seen countless of players posting about how afk ruined their ELO. I've seen only ONE of them having more afk in his team than in the other team, for everybody else the result was either THEY afk a lot, or either the number of afker was greater on the other team.

There are also premades who use voice-communication which is significantly a greater advantage over solo players or premades that don't use voice communication. This is a nightmare for solo players like me. I mean I'll still climb and I'm currently climbing but, this is absolutely hell in the higher elos. As a solo player it almost feels like the work I put in gets absolutely buried and neglected because of the dominant premade that I get paired with. It's literally a coin-toss to see which premade I get paired with and against. Phylol, Dyrus, and Trick2g made a video about this issue as well.

That being said, I also hate being paired with a toxic 4-man premade as a solo player. I would be fine if I got paired with maybe 1 other random and a 3-man, or even 2 other randoms and a duo premade. Having to deal with 4 players in 1 premade is a nightmare usually because they will never see wrong with their reasoning or actions. I had a scenario where one of the members typed racist remarks while tilted. I tried to tell him that racism isn't the answer but, his premade backed him up and tried to justify it. Then after I muted all of them, they nonverbally griefed by going into my lane and intentionally soaking up experience, farm, and running into enemy tower and then afking all 4.

The TL;DR Conclusion: Dynamic Queue has been hell for solo players. It's literally RNG on what premade you get paired with and/or against. Getting paired with a 4-man premade is hell because that's pretty much the hardest coordination to fight against as a solo player with no voice communication, and there is always possibility of the 4-man ganging up on you and bullying both verbally and nonverbally. Not to mention 'Fill' = 100% support, and Secondary Support = You'll rarely ever get the Main role. Also why can't there be a 3 or 4 role check? This would make it even easier for matchmaking to pair up people. We're forced to either choose 2 roles or 5* (Fill = 5, but also = Support)

Imo I feel the premade with a support is best tbh

My main duo partner is a support main (I'm a mid main, jg secondary) and together we coordinate so many good plays. He carries my ass all the time by setting me up for amazing engages or multi-kills.

Dynamic queue for solo players is like poker where the solo player only gets either a 2 hearts and a 7 spades or an ace hearts and an ace spades. Neither hands are likely to change the outcome with the flop, turn and river, the offsuit 2 and 7 almost always loses to the pocket aces. Low ELO ranked currently is like this, solo players hardly have any influence on the outcome of a match because of smurfs trolls afk's dynamic queue players and players who easily give up and start feeding. I'm a support main and can't change shit, lol, it's just tossing a coin.
