Lets talk sion
Lets talk sion. This champion is currently a weird topic of debate as there are 2 different kinds of people. There are the people that think the new sion is useless and there are people that think hes op. As a old sion main i do believe that i am able to talk for both points. If there is any biases in this please point them out and i will change it if i see the bias as well. I also don't know a lot about the new sion (the 4 sion skins i bought for my love of the champion are pretty much useless) so if i leave something out please do inform me.
First lets talk new sion. This should be an easy thing to start out with as I'm sure many people will agree. New sion is strong. Now when I'm saying hes strong I'm not saying that hes stronger then old sion by any means. That's debate-able.
New sion is based around the idea of being a mega tank and in reality it is in accordance to the current meta. Riot did incredibly well on this front. Sion is a super tank with a ton of cc and mobility. As debate-able as the mobility is. He has the ability to tank harder then a 5 warmog Mundo in season 2. He is also able to be useful in lane phase with his damage on his e. Meanwhile with all this he still is a very linear champion whether you like it or not. You don't really have many options other then building tankiness on him. You can build hydra if you are ahead and dorans rings in the early game for lane harass but in the end of the day you are a tank. A sad little tank. Or you build nothing but ad and 1 shot a splitpushing squishy. I would like to leave it at this as the pros can tell you the rest.
Now lets talk old sion. Meanwhile not fitting the idea that riot had in mind for sion which ultimately lead to his dimize he had his own personality. He was like the pyro from team fortress 2 (Copyright. © 2013 Valve Corporation. As i respect ownership). He was murderous on the outside but with his tone of voice and the things he was speaking you could just tell he was haveing a wonderful time. You cant tell me that if you mained sion some of it doesnt rub off on you.
Old sion was a loved champion to many players. You Usually never Saw a sion main in bronze as sion was a champion that had a massive learning curve but was easy enough to play that you could play it once and think you had it mastered. But im sorry to tell you this if you arent a sion main. You suck at old sion. You really do and i know that you think your god at him but you really suck at him. If you compared one of my games or one of soultrans games to your games you would understand. Hell soultran was so badass he made it into a youtube video with 300k veiws. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpDkUH-zy5c . As a champion that had very little to no mobility in a teamfight if you moved a little bit out of position you could lose a teamfight.
Heres a visual for people that arent understanding this. X is sion O is pretty much anybody you are trying to kill
if you are fighting someone it would be something like this when you are hitting them O X if you were to move up and to the right in a diagonal direction you would be able to stay alive in a teamfight. With 100% lifesteal you could easily get 500 health with an autoattack. That is an insane fight turner in high elo and can make or break a teamfight a visual would be Ox But if you would be to move a little bit to the right insted of moveing foward while moveing to the side you could pretty much screw your entire team and throw a teamfight. visual O
X
I would also like to point out that while it is true that sion doesnt have a skillshot that if the only difficult point about a champion like syndra was the fact that she has to aim a little. is she really that hard?
Now i would like to get to the main point. Why are people so split about sion? Some people say the new sion sucks (this comeing from a person actually impacted by the change; HE DOESNT.) Some people main this new champion reguardless of just being a meatsheild for freelo. The reason this debate exist is simple. The sion rework wasnt done right. Nor was it needed. Lets use an example to start this point off. One of the reasons why urgot isnt played is because hes ugly. Meanwhile his kit isnt good (its better but you need to allow urgots q to apply on hit effects for him to be right where he needs to be) but if it was some hot girl every horny 13 year old would find a way to make it viable. The same problem was with sion. He was in dire need of a visual update. It was a ugly champion with a clanky walking animation and no feet. But this isnt even the only problem that was holding back sion. Remember how i said that sion was easy to learn but you still suck with him? Thats for 2 reasons. One is that the gap between mastering sion and learning him was massive. But also because riot was kind of holding back progress on the champion. They actually recommended ap sion which: while you guys are the main reason i think sion was reworked had some merits to it. You might as well reccomend ap gangplank who has 2 ap ratios as well and one that gives him more on his health bar. You should have gotten either me or soultran to fix up the champions build path we could have made it easier on learning sions. You need to have the core items be a hydra and boots of swiftness. Then phantom dancer spirit visage randuins and sightstone with other situational items to swap out. This build allows people to learn sion easier and helps them overcome the massive gap between learned and mastered. I like to call this brood-mother syndrome as it has happened before. brood-mother is a champion on dota that is rather underplayed but in the right hands can be the strongest hero in the game. It is simply being held back by the way it is being taught so players are actually struggleing to learn how to use her properly. Reason i dont call it karma syndrome? (first champion that had this problem but isnt the same case) because valve doesnt do the crap riot does as they understand meta. They know that eventually people will learn how to use a champion well and if given a little buff people will try it out. They also understand that thousands of players use any hero every single week. whether it be only 2k players or 100k players there are still people that love the hero. Im not saying that dota is better. Just that they are doing something right.
But you might be asking me. "that doesnt make sense why wasnt the rework done right?" After you understand the background of sion and the reason he was being held back you also have to understand why riot even reworked him. He was a loved champion. Meanwhile people didnt play him they wanted to. They knew his power and would have liked to take him into ranked. So all you had to do is visually update him and possibly buff his movement speed or something in his kit that isnt his ultimate or his e (100% lifesteal and the ad steroid that gives health) or just make his passive something useful. a boost of movement speed would help. Riot went overboard with the sion rework. They could have just made a brand new champion with the way they made the kit. Its nothing like the old sion even being admitted by them dureing the champion spotlight "the only part of sion that is still in the kit is his w" in fact if you put the old sion into the game he could fit right in with sion without haveing one for all problems. It would be like skarner and hecarim. Similar ideas (tons of mobility and cc) differnt champions (damage to tankiness ratio).
So riot. I have a proposition. Why not take 5 Sion mains and let them teach people how to play sion. And put the old sion back into the game. I will talk about how you can do this in a moment. Let the sion mains made a video to show people the various ways to play sion and some mechanics of him. http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/build/how-to-get-to-gold-with-ad-sion-380242 this was my guide so something like this but prettier would work. Now how would you put him in the game now? Not too hard. Recycle the kit but i would like to rethink sion the way most sion mains think of him. As a loveable crazy bastard. I say when you ult he should start eating his oponents while cutting them. There should be two screens for this. For the person playing sion when he presses ult he should suddenly see champions turn into candy and creeps turn into chocolate. You should be allowed to turn this off if you please but for you people should see rainbows and happiness. Meanwhile the enemys should see blood as you eat them. You are the cannabal. YOU ARE THE MIGHTY CORPSEMAKER. Make the lore pretty much the same but change his position from being a general to being a mass murderer. Make him sound as vicious as possible. Then ingame make him do the same thing but be in a good mood and always positive. "i hope i meet garen today, hes always such a nice guy." "what a beautiful day."
