An Active Players Plea To RIOT: AFKs Should be Kept Away

Seeing as there doesn't seem to be a clear board for this topic, and it does have to do with gameplay and balance between teams, I'll post it here.

I'm 110% certain that everyone who has ever played league for more than a day has run into an AFK, in fact most of us are probably in the high double-digits or even in the low triple-digits. Be it ranked or unranked, AFKs are running more rampant than ever lately and show up in seemingly every game we play, on one team or the other (if not both). AFKs leave a sense of impending doom upon the team left with a disadvantage, leading to a much less enjoyable experience, and often one that negatively affects our opinions of the game and the other team.

AFKs happen for a myriad of reasons, including server problems, local internet bandwidth, and many more arguably understandable reasons. However there are also those who AFK simply because they find out they're bad at their current champion, are having a bad match, or are just straight up assholes. Nobody wants to play with those people. Ever. They just negatively impact the League experience as a whole. Unfortunately it's often impossible to tell, as another player, if someones reason for being AFK is reasonable or not. Even more unfortunately, the result is still the same: the disadvantaged team gets a sense of impending defeat that ruins the usually great experience of playing League.

Therefore, what should you do to get rid of the AFK problem? That's a tricky answer, and one I'm sure RIOT has looked for many times before. There's the Tribunal, which can punish AFK players individually and with a margin of error (and also with very little-to-no effect on them at all), but as we can all see the Tribunal isn't working to deter or reduce the number of AFKs we encounter on a nearly every game basis. So obviously we need something broader and more effective, and that's where my idea comes in. Punish all AFKs equally.

"But what about those with bad internet?" is what I'm sure many of you want to yell at me right now, and I have an answer for you although it may not be what you want to hear. My answer is "that may not be your fault, but that sucks for you". Now I'm sure a lot of you are absolutely outraged about how I could even consider holding someone accountable for what could be beyond their control, but hear me out. When you go AFK for any reason, be it bad internet, ragequitting, or any other possible reason, you're ruining the game for the the other 4 people on your team, and likely also anybody on the other team who wanted a fun and fair game too. That's 9 people. Now I'm not talking about those of us who don't connect right away and finally pop on around the time Minions show up in lanes, I'm talking about those who leave for 10 minutes at a time or even entire games.

**Now here's the actual idea I'd like to suggest to RIOT for eliminating the AFK menace:**
Have the server track who gets disconnected, for how long, and how many times. While it's doing that have it keep track of those instances separately for when the system is undergoing maintenance or is otherwise unstable. Then use that data to auto-punish those who excessively AFK.

For example, if someone was AFK for an entire match twice in a day, give them a one-day ban. If it happens a few more times, make it a three-day ban, and so on. Nobody enjoys playing with an AFK anyway.

But if someone is AFK for 10 minutes during a match several times in a day just don't let them join any games for an hour. If it continues, make it 3 hours, and so on. It should be making sense now.

If someone disconnects a large number of times in a match, say 4, (even if it's only for a minute each time) then give them the same punishment as someone who was AFK for part of the match (Which is exactly what I said in the above sentence).

And because the server would be tracking times of instability and marking them down separately, people can't whine about it being the "stupid RIOT servers", which I find absolutely BS by the way as I've had issues maybe once or twice with RIOT servers in all my time playing.

While that would be my master plan for fixing the AFK issue, there's also another much less severe (but also much less effective) thing RIOT could try.

When someone on your team is AFK, and only while they're AFK, your team all gets a small buff to make up for the missing person! This really just evens out the game again and gets rid of some of that feeling of impending defeat people always feel.

This would be more of a band-aid than the major surgery we need. It would make having an AFK a bit more bearable, but wouldn't stop AFKs from happening at all.

I would love to hear from RIOT if they have any plans for combating the ever-growing surge AFK players we are all having to deal with.

Let me put it this way - at least from an ARAM perspective.

I had a couple of 4v5's the other day. We compensated here and here.

AFKers occur a lot, it's true, but when you face the game with an attitude of 'doom' you're setting yourself for failure. Just take what you have and play defensively as possible. That doesn't solve the issue, but it's at least a bit of helpful inspiration to what might otherwise be certain death to some.

Off of that point and onto the main topic - I see AFK's infrequently. They can occur in a double wombo like on that day, or they can occur every 10 games or so. For your concept of punishment, I greatly agree - but I'd like it to also take into account the attempted times to reconnect to the match. My personal experience with internet within the past couple of months has been pure shite (Verizon sucks man) and my internet is far from the most stable creature around. Most of the time I'm fine and can play well enough, but once the crap starts I can't do much of anything but try and apologize to the team and stay as connected as possible.

Anywho, there's my few cents.

Cheers!

You're right, I should've mentioned that it should take into account how many times it tries to reconnect, because at least then the person is attempting to get back into the game. When I had written this I had just come out of a game with three AFKs after a whole day of AFKs in literally all of the games I played, save one or two. While I also agree that you shouldn't face an AFK situation with an "attitude of doom", that's not always possible. It really depends on who you're playing with and what position has gone AFK. Doom is infectious, once one of your teammates mentions it it seeps into the other 4 over time and further disadvantages the team as a whole.

Also, yeah Verizon sucks eggs, I tried it for a free month... had to pay them to get it out of my house after a week.

Thanks for the feedback, it's appreciated.

You're aware that they do exactly what you suggested already, right?

They're doing something similar, not exactly like I suggested, and obviously it's not working to the extent it should be. Depends on which game mode you play too I suppose.

To clarify, they do what you quoted, but not what I suggested** after the quote** in the original post.

Thank you for the feedback, it's appreciated.

LeaverBuster works exactly like that already.

For example, if someone was AFK for an entire match twice in a day, give them a one-day ban. If it happens a few more times, make it a three-day ban, and so on. Nobody enjoys playing with an AFK anyway.

The thresholds are based on games played rather than "incidents in the same day" (which would be abusable by trolls), but it basically works like that. LeaverBuster bans escalate exactly like that already.

But if someone is AFK for 10 minutes during a match several times in a day just don't let them join any games for an hour. If it continues, make it 3 hours, and so on. It should be making sense now.

Currently the penalties start at the 1-day level and scale up from there. They're looking at making changes, though, so maybe they will experiment with very short bans like this. But a "three hour" or even "one hour" ban could effectively be 24 hours for a lot of players -- if you only have a few hours to play, a ban of that length is likely to take you out until the next day. For kids who can spam games for 16 hours on a weekend day it might be effective, but I don't know. Riot would have better numbers to look at things like this on a large scale.

If someone disconnects a large number of times in a match, say 4, (even if it's only for a minute each time) then give them the same punishment as someone who was AFK for part of the match (Which is exactly what I said in the above sentence).

LeaverBuster works exactly like that already.

And you didn't mention this, but it's also harsher in Ranked play.

...obviously it's not working to the extent it should be...

It works really well on players who actually DC/AFK all the time. They quickly work their way up to getting 3- or 7-day bans for every incident, and then they are forced to resolve their issues -- either technical or attitude-based.

The problem is people who DC/AFK occasionally, which -- much like with verbal toxicity -- is actually the majority of the DCs/AFKs you see.

If they make the current system much stricter and hand out bans for just one or two incidents, the additional people you end up punishing are mostly ones who had some temporary glitch with their ISP, or a random power outage, or some one-time RL emergency. Granted, you'd punish more infrequent rage-quitters, but you'd hit a lot more people who had something happen that was out of their control.

That's why they are trying to detect and crack down on ragequits/rage-AFKs much harder than other disconnects, because that's something players can actually avoid doing.

I guess the other thing you're talking about (there are no "quotes" in your OP?) is this:

When someone on your team is AFK, and only while they're AFK, your team all gets a small buff to make up for the missing person! This really just evens out the game again and gets rid of some of that feeling of impending defeat people always feel.

Been suggested many times before.

The problem is that if the buff is "small" it probably won't compensate, and if it's too strong then there could be cases where it's actually advantageous to have a poorly-performing player quit. Very, very hard to balance, especially for competitive play. Maybe you could do it in Normals.
