Can mages get another armour item? Please?

Call Me Nana··84 votes·17,822 views

We have a whopping one item that gives armour. item 3157

if you're not going to give us anything else, can we at least get the hexdrinker passive (but for AD) built into seekers armguard?

UNIQUE – LIFELINE: If you would take physical damage that would reduce maximum health below 30%, you first gain a shield that absorbs 110 - 280 (based on level) physical damage for 5 seconds (90 second cooldown)

Are you out of your god damn mind? Did you just propose to add an item that will make mages have a decent chance deal with assassins (especially ad ones)?! SHAME ON YOU.

But in all seriousness, riot will never do it unless they properly address the problem that ap items have. That they are being shared by all mages. Under NO circumstances should a vlad and xerath be able to buy the same items to be viable. One is a mage that sacrifice mobility and tankness for range and damage, while the other one is a mage that sacrifices range for damage and drain tanking capabilities. They shouldnt share the same items.

And to those that are going to mention " BUT MAGES ONLY CARE FOR BIG NUMBERS (ap specifically) HERP DERP", well riot can avoid this by making INTERESTING PASSIVES. By making us CHOOSE what items we want to build not like the lost chapter shitfest that we currently have (you go seraphs if you are anivia, ryze, cass, signed or ez. You should always never pick glp because its pure garbage UNLESS you really need the extra mana and you cant wait for seraphs.. And you pick ludens when you cant buy seraphs).

Here's an example, if you hit someone that is close to you with one of your spells , you gain (lets say in our case) a stack that increases your armour by y (max stacks being x). The item would also have generally stats that increase mostly the survivability. As such champs that want to deal dmg wont want to buy it most of the times. And in order to avoid (or at least deter) tanks from buying it, they could make it to have a limitation of some sort. Like warmongs. Like, in order for the passive to work, you need to have 150 ap at least or something like that.

wildfox998 votes

something like the old AP item 3001

just melee or low range mages would get it since the aura had a limited range

kinda like now item 3102 is better on ranged champions since they won't get hit often so its passive will be up more often

adding some item with some INTeresting passive/actives wouldn't be too bad, especially when some AD items like item 3147 have a wall of text only for describing their 2/3 passives

Hey, not trying to be rude, but i have a question.

Why do you believe mages should be favored in matchups vs assassins? Or maybe another way, why mages should be able to survive full assassin combo only with item purchases?

Warlord Rhinark20 votes

item 3170 add this to SR.

Ahpe13 votes

Just give mages their equivalent to a item 3053 or item 3155 item 3156.

EDIT: Nvm I'm dumbass, bad idea.

Terozu1 votes

Its called item 3102

what

No it's not lmao

If you are hurting that bad for armor why not build a item 3110 ?

With the Trancendance rune it makes the item give you 40 AP once you over cap CDR so you are only sacrificing a bit of early game to make it functional.

if you think building god damn frozen heart on a mage equals even one ad/defensive item assassins get to build i fail to see how you dont see this isnt ok.........

Selegun4 votes

The OP asked for an armor item with AP. Can you please point out where that had to be equivalent in his post?

Considering you can plan ahead for frozen heart you could cap out at even 52 AP from the item with an Archangel Staff.

your suggesting a mage to buy an item that grants armor, mana and a passive that reduces AS, but no AP at all unless you are running a specific rune that will only kick in later than a mage would like, while AD champions have two options that give them both AD and MR at the same time, one of them grants a magic shield too while the other breaks CC which many mages not only have but sometimes need to lock down an assassin before they die

Selegun3 votes

Yes, that is what I'm suggesting. Having so much trouble that you need more armor should be enough of a clue that you are not ment to be winning the early game anyway. Most mages are far better suited to dispachting minions anyway so taking the time to keep your tower healthy and the assassin from getting an easier kill will keep your team in an over all better spot.

He never said that was as good as the ad options, but it is still a half decent option compared to anything else you can buy as a mage, the mana from that item can be weaponized by seraph`s embrace not to mention the cdr being great aswell….

3x4 (400 mana, 3% mana conversion to ap) = 12 ap from mana

12 + 40 (provided that you have full cdr already) = 52 ap total

That's not bad for an item that gives 100 armor and even if you don't have full cdr , frozen heart will make up for it and fill that stat for you...

Selegun6 votes

That is what I was thinking. As long as you are willing to plan around needing that much armor in the short term it doesn't cripple you nearly as much as refusing to adapt and waiting for a patch that has no real reason to have an item catered to you.

LordGeovanni2 votes

Except that by refusing to adapt riot will then say lower winrate we can buff them not that mages have a particularly low winrate versus a class that is supposed to counter squishy ranged champions which is exactly what mages are classified as even though they have more hp than anyone else on average.

Selegun2 votes

So you are advocating a demonstration of intentional lack of skill in the hopes it makes mages easier to play? Holy balls I hope I'm reading that wrong.

LordGeovanni2 votes

Not advocating it But rather that This is what damage carry classes do cry that they die to fast refuse to drop damage to get defense they want more defense without dropping damage or want other champions nerfed because they die more quickly than they like when they want to. They want to live longer without dropping damage despite their classes (adcs, Assassins, and mages) specifically being labled as squishy.

Bjørnetjenesten3 votes

100 armor used to be good, now its worthless trash stat since everyone has true dmg.

Beatrice falls14 votes

Why don't you build item 3065 on an adc or assassin

TheKingOfBiches4 votes

Because that dosnt give you ad?

Rathar Dashing7 votes

Selegun2 votes

lol, I actually forgot about him since I've yet to pick him up. As a side question, does Titanic Hydra count his HP or does his passive prevent that?

I would try it if I wouldnt get flamed for trolling [zombie-brand-facepalm]

Flamed for trolling or flamed for inting, that's the no win scenario of why we let Korea think of all our builds.

No just flamed for building item 3110 on a mage. Honestly I would scoff at my own teammate for building something like that on a mage. but then again what do I know.

Selegun1 votes

lol, a difference of values then. I would much rather see a weird/bad build than a double digit death score on my team.

True enough. Practice is always a deciding factor after all.

Rexxiee8 votes

Yes, mages arent totally seeing play bot lane in 2 roles and some mid lane.

We need mages to also take over the rest of the map because the are "so weak".

Nyarlathοtep5 votes

LOL. Meanwhile a total of 3 mages are ones that go bot most of the time and are meta (vlad, swain, heimer) doesnt equal the whole mage roaster.

Crescent Dusk5 votes

And Vlad and Swain go bot to begin with because they perform horribly in mid against both assassins and longer range mages during laning. Vlad's horrendous wave pushing early game is what makes bot lane mitigate the issue far more as you get help from the support in not getting pushed into turret.

Let me present to you the Hextech Magnet-Laucher v2!

Hextech Magnet-Laucher v2

+70 Ability Power +50 Armor +10% Cooldown Reduction (?)

Unique – Cold Steel: When hit by basic attacks, cripples source's attack speed by 15% for 1 second. Unique Active - Magnet Bolt: fires a magnet bolt in a stright line (skillshoot), magent bolt deals 100 - 200 (based on level) (+ 30% AP) (+ 30% Bonus Armor) magic damage to the target hit. Enemy champions hit by magnet bolt are Grounded for 4s. (40 second cooldown, shared with other Hextech items).

Builds from: item 3145 + item 3082 + 800g Total gold cost: 2850g

Bjørnetjenesten4 votes

You should make this into a seperate post, this is really nice, i like the grounded active to counter assassins.

DorkunedAuras3 votes

So, core item on Malphite. The bonus armour ratio alone makes him drool. Along with Rammus and Taric.

Shablagoo2 votes

So op, thats 100 armor with zhonyas and a ridiculous passive, anivia at level 10 has 52 armor, thats 152 armor at level ten with those items, thats pretty much juggernaut armor. Plus with the amount of health mage items give it would be to much. Make it 30.

BLACK REALM GOD5 votes

item 3026 damage + armor item 3157 abilities + armor

these are the only two items that give raw damage or ability power and armor.

then there are armor+ items that give other things alongside armor.

item 3139 damage + magic resist item 3156 damage + magic resist item 3174 abilities + magic resist item 3102 abilities + magic resist

there are other items that grant things that can increase your amount of magic resist and grant you the ability to deal more damage, but raw stats wise these are the only 4.

so it's obvious there are a lot of gaps, but it's not because of there being too few items. it's because the items we do have are super niche for the most part.

Lets not forget Nullifying Orb as well...

Not to mention item 3040 can produce a magic shield and item 3812 gives AD and buys you some time to heal off the physical damage vamp also provided by this one single item.

And if you depend on landing CC, item 3140, item 3222, and summoner 1 also exist...

The only thing that seems equal to both sides is bone plating.

item 3191 cucks item 3134 but I see a lot of mages going item 3802 first instead. [zombie-brand-facepalm] item 3157 Also hardcucks Talon and Zed. Time it right and you deny their ultimates.

There is also item 3027 item 3165 item 3151 item 3116 . That's a lot of health options right there.

A +5 armor buff would be nice though.

Yeah, why mages would want to have mana regeneration to not being forced to go to base every 3 minutes. It's such a mistery. [sg-lulu]

DorkunedAuras3 votes

Well, if you're forced to go to base every 3 minute due to dying in lane...

Hensetsu2 votes

Because you would be dead every time you come into lane.

At least from my experience.

  • you can go double dorans (which I do for the extra HP).

But hey, if you think Lost Chapter is actually a good rush item vs Zed than that's up to you.

Spirt Gun Yuske4 votes

Lol Zonya's single best armor item in the game

OtterlyLost3 votes

Sure, mages can have another armor item when ADCs can have half the number of defensive/offensive items that mages get. It must be hard, as a mage, to get an item that gives you a fat ass shield, tons of mana, CDR, and tons of AP(item 3048) or to have an item that gives you MR, a spell shield, AP, and CDR (item 3102) or to have an item that gives you health, AP, and % health damage(item 3151) or to have an item that gives armor, AP, CDR, and a nifty little statis active to protect against burst(item 3157).

Its very hard to be a mage and survive in this kind of meta with all of these defensive + offensive items. I know.

Rathar Dashing6 votes

Don't pretend like there isn't an AD version of all those items you listed.

Don't pretend like there isn't an AD version of all those items you listed.

There aren't though? GA is not comparable to Zhonya's; its less damage, less defense, and has a far longer CD. Mercurial Scimitar is not comparable to Banshee's; you have to activate it, its less MR, AGAIN a lower CD, and less damage There is nothing AD champions can get that compares to Seraph's; Muramana is only used by Ezreal as he's the only champion capable of using it well. And I'm sorry but do either of the LW items give a shitton of health and % health damage? I think not.

Mages get to literally be off tanks with their builds and that's insane and frustrating to me because they already have abilities in their kits intended for self peel. Why do they also get great defensive+offensive options. This didn't even touch on the large amount of health that are on these items. RoA+Liandry's+Rylai's is 1100 health by themselves with decent amounts of AP. How is this even remotely fair? Why do mages get to end up basically as off tanks?
