Demotion Question?

So we've all been there, 0 LP and about to be demoted.

How do you know if you lose your next game you will get demoted though?

I was at 0 LP lost 4 games at 0 LP and still didn't get demoted, winning my 5th and gaining 18lp.

And on the other side, I've been at 18 LP lost a game got to 0 LP, lost one more and got instantly demoted?

Could someone explain this without using explanations that run in circles with no actual proof?

I believe if you go to the "Leagues" section, if you're on the bottom of the list for your league, you're about to get demoted. If you've been losing games but you're still not lowest on the list, you won't be demoted yet. I'm PRETTY sure that's how it was explained to me when I had the same question but I haven't looked at it in a while.

All I know is its based on your MMR and the avg MMR for that league. So lets say youre Gold5 and your at 0 LP and your MMR drops to Silver1 range you'll demote at your next loss
