Yet the champions that we often see in competitive never stay far off the spotlight. Champions that get dominant that don't fit the high playerbase, big plays, "high skillcap" are often butchered out if they ever come in competitive.

Champions like the big "playmakers" have pretty much always been viable, sometimes on the spotlight for entire years. Before they get "nerfed", which ends up being a powershift making them broken in another aspect.

When a somewhat braindead champion goes too strong, better destroy him? Weedwick op cause devourer/feral flare and weak/average as a laner? Better make 3 nerfs on him and then nerf the problematic item ! Anivia/Karthus dare risk coming back? Better nerf them, especially Karthus wall, everyone is complaining about Karthus right now.

Meanwhile, oneshoots? Let's make their kit slightly different so that...they destroy everyone as melee trinity bruisers... When they got surprised champs like didn't get picked so much anymore, hey let's buff them ! We can't just let them in the shadow for a little while, like all the champions we don't want in the spotlight, right?

(Ofc it is true these champions are mechanically challenging and get usually better at a very high level of play. Still...)
