I don't see many people building this item anymore. I don't see it being a bad item for any type of games for mages. I only seen it built (sometimes) on 
. I think if Riot were to revert back

Lich Bane is pretty good on people who have AA's in their kits like 
. Just because it isn't built on everyone like deathcap doesn't mean its a bad item. Just like Essence reaver, just because it isnt built on

The item is fine and it's usage on the champs that build it make it abusable already when you build the full Lich Bane, not to mention how well it scales. There's no point to giving these (rather wide for a niche) champions even more early game power with the components and how much it greatly helps the champions who deal that kind of extra free scaling damage.

Some mages have a hard time auto-attacking. As an example, let's go with 
.
When I played him for the first time, I had a hard enough time actually casting all my skills because he has 3 offensive skills on a super low cooldown. If I threw in an AA I would literally be delaying skill damage because there was no window where everything was on cd.
On someone like however, one of 2 things happens:
One of your skills automatically proc's on-hit effects.
(Akali) Part of your burst is already factored into your autoattacks (her mark) so you HAVE to find time to throw in an AA to do your damage.
Rather not see more TF players.
I really enjoy the item on champs like Ekko, but the item reaches out to such a niche champion pool, AP champs with auto attack abilities. Like Ekkos phase-dive or fizz's urchin strike benefit heavily from Lich bane, compared to champs like Syndra or Anivia who have no need to auto attack during their combos.
Good first item on . Just generally good on champions with low-cooldown burst, especially if on-hit or autoattacking is involved.
Lich bane is my favorite item. It feels pretty versatile, considering it gives mana, cdr, ap, and movement speed. Its great for Mages who have the opportunity to weave AA's between spells (
is actually a really good example, she can proc it about 3 times if you do her combo right) or champs that rely on AA's like Ori, Lux, and Sona.
Lich Bane is fine, it's just low ap and it depends on a champions play pattern. with its cost, its not efficient to buy it if you aren't going to weave in an auto in a combo. so ekko does this automatically. fizz does, kassadin already does. Twisted Fate as well.
but lets say on a champ like Lux. why don't you build it on her? in theory it would be perfect for her? but then you realize later in the game you never want to be in auto attack range on a champ like Lux ever so the item is wasted most of the time.
That said, it has the unique niche of helping ap champs push down towers a bit faster. that is probably its best use in champs who are not going to utilize it so much in team fights. if you are somehow managing to split push as a champ who wouldn't usually build lich bane, then building it might not be a bad idea. I once built Lich Bane on morgana simply because the enemy team was not addressing me as I split push and I was able to take towers noticeably faster because of it.
Haven't seen anyone mention Sona yet (granted I might just be blind),
I usually build this almost every time I play her (I build almost full ap support), it works so well with her powercord and is so much fun to use that it's hard for me not to. Granted, that might just be me and it could be terrible on her, but I think it works for me.

Situational items:
Stomping hard meant Rabbadon or Ludens
Needing more health meant Rylai
Playing safe and getting a lot of assists (but little money) meant Mejai
And some bombshell mage getting fed meant QSS or Banshee
ROA is a maybe in case I need mana but the enemy mid isn't AP and they don't have someone who heals a lot for Morell. CDR is nice on Lux- but not crucial.
Crucial in this idea is that you need to be in AA distance so you can throw on that extra damage- so you need to be durable enough to survive a few hits. Every Illumination proc you get does damage- abuse it- BE THE BATTLE MAGE.
I think the main reason people don't get it is because it forces you to be in short range to auto attack the enemy, so you wouldn't get it on, like Syndra. If the passive activated on ability cast, like Luden's, everyone would buy it.
i imagine no pros want to take the risk of trying to fit in autos for their trading when most azirs/leblancs/cassiopeias will end up doing more consistent or just higher burst damage than a +50%AP bonus only to your autos. i guess at the highest level of play lich bane is like the most..."well-rounded/suitable for the largest....amount of possible optimal build paths...." niche item...?
