Riot please, why are you so money grinding?

Why do you force us to pay monthly membership to keep playing LoL? Why do you force us to buy runes and items with real money that can't be bought with ingame money just so we can stay competitive? Why do you force us to pay for updates every season?

Oh wait... It's just cosmetics that cost money. This game is completely free to play.

It doesn't make them not greedy and money grubbing.

Rinky Dinky3 votes

Literally does.

If it wasn't, you would have to pay for a subscription to get into ranked games and to buy certain champions. Champions obtainable without real money would be kept purposely weak, and money costing champs would be xin release op compared to "freebies"

If you wanna go cry at a company for being money grubbing you have EA, Ubisoft, Valve, and a shit ton of others.

If you think Riot is money grubbing on a company scale, then you've only ever played league.

And you're new to the world, born yesterday, and living in a literal and social bubble. On the grand scale of corporate corruption and money-grubbing, even EA, Capcom and Team Bondi are amateurs compared to the real monsters out there.

Come back when Riot crashes the global economy and kills a few ten thousand people for a nickel.

Which gaming company did this?

Did you not read the previous sentence?

Talking on the scale of all corporations, not just gaming ones.

Doesn't change the fact that paying customers feel slighted by Riot's lazy bullshit.

their real money costs are reasonable

the only thing about Riot that gets on my nerve is the IP cost for rune pages we start out with only 2, if their gonna charge us 6300IP per page, then at least give us an extra pair of pages free at lvl20 & 30 or make the first 3 pages cost half their price

you forgot one thing why do they focus on making cosmetics instead of making stuff like a testing grounds for ballance changes so our game wont explode every patch

its cosmetics that costs money ... you are right, but riot is focused on making cosmetics instead of improving the game all their ballance changes are showing it -what became op gets hammered down into oblivion -what is unpopular is untouched -some champions are set as standard picks and they wont be nerfed just to keep a certain pool playable, or they will recieve the slightest nerfs possible

its a realy simple method of keeping the game fresh without pushing it forward in any way or upping its quality every season we get some rather simplle changes like some items just to avoid stagnation, those items are as poorly ballanced as the rest -reworks fail being either insanely op or up -new champions are gamebreaking, sometimes even bugged as fk -lore got killed to not demand such creativity from designers and allow them to put whatever they want here (i consider this a good thing, but its still negative on their list)

this game is still the best moba on the market, but i get the feeling that it slowly loses its qualiity ... still gonna play it for some time, but i feel its burning out ... and the focus on "cosmetics" is probably the one to blame

Idk. You seem to think that big changes are good. I think Leauge of Legends is in a pretty good state and I love it that Riot doesn't completely change it every season to make it a completely new game. The chances that you like the new game more than the old one that you already like are lower than the chance that the update just ruins it for you.

I doubt that the cosmetics they create reduces the amount of effort they put into the game balance.

  1. You need money to hire staff. Without cosmetics to charge for, they get less money. Now, it's not guaranteed that the money is spent on employees (we don't know how much the CEO puts in his own pocket) but it's probably correlated with investments.
  2. There are different people/themes working on cosmetics and gamebalance. You could argue that they should hire less artists and more game balancers, though.
  3. Spending more money on gamebalance probably doesn't grant that much more results. At some point, you just reach a roof where it's hard to do better even when putting twice as many men on the task. The results are often based on the quality of each game balancer rather than on the amount of game balancers hired.

Yes, these arguments can be debated about, I'm not saying that you're necessarily wrong. You have some strong truths in what you said, but I personally disagree on the main part.

I think that Riot does pretty well balance-wise. They are reworking a lot of old champions (although the result isn't always that great Ryze Zilean but sometimes it is Sion) and they try to make champions balanced but still different by creating clear strengths and weaknesses rather than just nerfing the strengths.

Of course, there are a bunch of examples where you can show Riot went wrong, but it's always easier to critzise what someone else does than it is to do it yourself. There are a lot of things they do pretty damn well that are taken for granted but shouldn't be.

Because a lot of players like that kind of thing? And it doesn't cost a ton of money. It isn't "either/or".

its cosmetics that costs money ... you are right, but riot is focused on making cosmetics instead of improving the game all their ballance changes are showing it -what became op gets hammered down into oblivion

LIES! Recent changes are that OP champions do not get hammered out. They get a series of small nerfs until they become balanced (See Hec/Cass). The examples that go against this (e.g. Azir) got re-buffed in the next few patches.

-what is unpopular is untouched

Hey, What is that new item that completely changed the meta and made more picks viable? Did it come out recently? DId they try giving some of the champions that might use it small buffs to see if it was necessary? Yes, yes, yes.

-some champions are set as standard picks and they wont be nerfed just to keep a certain pool playable, or they will recieve the slightest nerfs possible

This seems to go against an earlier point:

-what became op gets hammered down into oblivion

So yeah...

its a realy simple method of keeping the game fresh without pushing it forward in any way or upping its quality

It doesn't keep the game fresh. The di-weekly patches and large preseason changes do that. Did you not see how much the game changed at the start of this year?

every season we get some rather simplle changes like some items just to avoid stagnation, those items are as poorly ballanced as the rest

And some complicated changes. And... loads...

-reworks fail being either insanely op or up

Yup... This also happens on new champion release. Know why? Balance is hard.

-new champions are gamebreaking, sometimes even bugged as fk

Bugs happen. Also, you seem to not like the big changes in champions here. I thought you didn't like stagnation. What do you want?

-lore got killed to not demand such creativity from designers and allow them to put whatever they want here (i consider this a good thing, but its still negative on their list)

The new lore is actually more creative than the old lore. Most people just want more of it.

Knight SoIaire 1 votes

Also, you seem to not like the big changes in champions here.

actualy i love them, old champions get updated and get more unique what i hate is that riot always misses with numbers etc and new stuff is either useless or op or gamebreaking in any way

thats why i listed the proving grounds for ballance changes as something riot should spend their time one instead of grinding money off us

Balance is hard.

its not that ballance is hard ... ballance is preety simple ... the thing is that ballance cant be predicted by some math mixed with a couple of games at riots office and the opinions of some guys at riot's office

they cant ballance anything untill they see it in action handled by players and they have no way of doing so, and there is no indication they want to get such a tool

also pbe is not used for that purpose (rioter said), pbe is used just to identify gamebreaking bugs and gamebreaking opness, not simple ballance

The new lore is actually more creative than the old lore. Most people just want more of it.

thats why i consider it a good thing, riot can basicaly put everything in our game and we can see examples already -rek sai -azir -new ekko -bard -gnar -vel koz

those guys arent the type that would just come to the institute of war (or what was it), and ask politely to join up .... some cant even speak the rest has no real reason to do so by removing that constrain riot got freedom but at the same time the lenght got reduced from one page, to 3 maybe 5 lines of text thats just a description (rek sai's lore is basicaly "hurr durr big monster, hunts people, verryyyyyy scurrryyyyyy, also digs tunnels")

so its a good change, but rioters got lazy and people who liked lore hate them for that

Does no one know that the game balance department and the art department are two different entities, or that a company can focus on more than one thing at a time?

Knight SoIaire 1 votes

does no one know that the skinns department grows ? we have ward skinns ultimate skinns chroma packs and owerall their pace of work is speeding up to release more and betterquality skinns for one purpose ... getting our$$

meanwhile ballance department just throws some numbers around from time to time to give us the delusion that the game gets ballanced they dont get to expand and increase the quuality of their work because it does not yield $$

Oh Valve, why are you so money grinding?

Why do you force us to pay monthly membership to keep playing Dota 2? Why do you force us to buy an in game replay system? Why do you force us to buy cosmetic items that grant new sounds, particle effects and new icons? Why do you force us to create entirely new accounts when we want to play on different servers? Why do you force us to pay for every new heroes? Why do you force us to alt tab out of the game for guides and info on the game that's up to date? Why do you force us to watch competitive games outside of the client?

OH WAIT! Absolutely nothing costs money in Dota 2, everything is available IN THE INGAME CLIENT, You can even earn cosmetic items for free, and you automatically have every single hero unlocked from the very start. Not to mention Valve gives a special gift box that gives a free courier, free ward, free announcer/megakill pack, and various other cosmetic items.

"But it's free to play tho" is why Freemium gaming got out of hand. Riot's nowhere near that scummy, but just because it's free to walk through the door doesn't mean Riot doesn't do money grubbing.

Case in point: the fact you can change Masteries, which you can make as many pages as you want for free in champ select, but Rune pages, which is set up to be optimally bought with premium currency can not be changed on the fly.
