PETITION Make 'First Win of the Day' Daily

Dr Poro··575 votes·19,085 views

Currently, the First win of the day (FWOTD) bonus goes on a 22 hour cooldown after you've won a game.

I suggest to change it to a daily reset where it resets for everyone at the same time (e.g. at 3 AM or 7 AM). This means you have 24 hours to get that win and it doesn't matter whether you do it in the morning or in the evening.

Why?

  • First of all, the current FWOTD doesn't feel natural. It's not actually your first win of that day. You can have won 3 games already before the bonus becomes available again. FWOTD is a bonus that's supposed to stimulate people to play every day. I sometimes don't feel like playing when I see "2:03:11 left" because I think "if I play now, I probably won't feel like playing again in 2 hours." (or I simply don't have the time as I still have work to do). This has actually limited my playtime in some occasions.

  • With the current system, you have 2 options, and I find both frustrating. Either you try to get your FWOTD as soon as possible by playing a Co Op vs AI (which takes less than 10 minutes in dominion). This is frustrating because I don't actually like playing against bots and I feel like I'm wasting time grinding for IP instead of having fun. OR you try to get it in normals/rankeds by playing like you would otherwise but then you risk losing time for your next FWOTD. You see, the longer it takes you to get that win, the later your next FWOTD bonus will become available. I've often had 5 losses in a row with FWOTD and it felt terrible. I basically wasted half a day bonus because my bonus rest time shifted from afternoon to late evening. This is a huge problem, because once your bonus reset is in the late evening, you only have a limited amount of attempts to get that bonus before having to go to bed (to stay fresh for work/school next day of course) or you have to go back to option one with the issues already explained there. On top of delaying your FWOTD because a losing streak, it can also be delayed because you didn't have time to play when it just came off cooldown. People don't play this game at the same time of the day everyday. Sometimes you have time in the afternoon, sometimes you can only play in the evening. If you play in the evening one day, getting FWOTD, you can't get your FWOTD the next day if you only have time in the afternoon. This is FRUSTRATING.

Yes, it's a bonus and not obligatory, but getting IP for champions and runes already takes long enough and 150 IP is a big chunk. Missing out on this multiple times a week feels really bad (for me) because it delays your next purchase significantly.

A few discussion points: "But for people from a different time zone the reset would be in the middle of the day. That doesn't feel natural either." There are League servers across the world. I think most people can find a server with a time zone close to theirs. If it shifts 4 hours (from 3 AM to 7 AM) it's still not that big of a deal. If you're even further away from the server, I think the high ping will be a bigger issue for you than this. I think that this being unnatural for a few people is not an excuse to not make it feel better for the majority.

"But if it resets on the same time for everyone, won't it cause an activity spike right after the reset?" Why would it? You would have 24 hours to get that win. You don't need to get it right after the reset. On top of that, the reset would be somewhere during the night which is usually the least active period of the day.

"But won't this make getting IP easier and faster?" Theoretically, you can get IP faster with the current system as you can jump 2 hours per day. However, I think very few players do this and imo this is unhealthy to stimulate this kind of grind. Globally, yes, it would increase the IP most people get. Is this a problem? I see constant complaints on the boards about runes, etc. being too expensive. Riot is already testing to double the Exp gain to make 1-30 less grindy. I think they wouldn't care to much to allow people getting a little bit more IP on average. (Otherwise, why are they making all these IP bonus weekends?)

"People who play during the night or in another timezone could get an unfair advantage over others by getting this bonus twice in a row when they play around the reset time." It's true that they can pull this off, but...

  1. I think it's a minority of the people that would do this.
  2. They'd still get this bonus only once every day. Even though they got it twice in a row, they can only pull this off once every 2 days. You don't actually get any extra reward, you just get it a few hours faster.
  3. I think that the majority of the players who actually care about this already play this game every day. Doing this "trick" would only matter if you're not playing the next day.
  4. Playing for your FWOTD at the END of the day is pretty risky. If you don't win in time, you might lose out on it. Something people could do is getting their first win like usually, but keep playing during the night till the next FWOTD as early as possible. Does this matter? In my opinion, it's exactly the same as getting that next FWOTD after your first win next day.

Is this 100% fair? No, but in the current system it's also not 100% fair. People who play every day at the same time have an 'advantage' over others because they get to do their FWOTD every day. People who play in the afternoon one day and the late evening the next day don't get to do their FWOTD every day, even when they played every day and won every day. This actually causes a significant gap in IP income over time, unlike with the suggested mechanic (where the only advantage they get is not having to spread their games as much). This suggested mechanic allows certain players to gain an advantage of not having to play for a day if they plan it out well, but does that really bother others? Everyone would get the same bonus as long as they get one win every 24 hours. With the current system, those who don't try their best getting that FWOTD (the majority of the people) as fast as possible will get less.

If you agree, upvote. If you disagree, downvote. If you have anything to say, whether it's to support my points or counter them, please do.

tl;dr change the FWOTD reset from a 22 hour cooldown to a reset on a fixed time. The main reason for this change is to **reduce the frustration **caused when you can't win a game immediately whether by losing them or not having time when the FWOTD resets. In the current system, every minute you wait is a minute lost for the next day. With the new one, you have 24 hours to win and it doesn't matter whether you win immediately or after a few hours: you get the bonus and the reset will be at the same time.

Agree 100%. What we have now is so stupid.

Dr Poro8 votes

Luckily it's 22h rather than 24h, but it's still frustrating. I really HATE it when I lose normals when FWOTD is available. Also, when I'm losing hard, I keep spamming surrender votes because I want to play another game to get FWOTD ASAP. I know this is annoying for my team, but stretching a game for 10 minutes even though your chance to win is 2% just takes too much time away for my next bonus, especially if it happens 5 times in a row.

Sona Ping3 votes

I can probably name something even more frustrating: Completely losing out on a First Win bonus because you couldn't win a few normal games and the server's clock ticked past a certain time.

Dr Poro4 votes

True, but I think it would happen a lot less often as you have a full 24 hour cycle to get it. If you waited till last minute to do so, then it's your risk.

And even if you did miss out on it, but won your next game, it would just be 2-3 hours longer than with the current one not a whole day extra.

The thing is. Right now you don't 'completely lose a FWOTD' as much, but you lose parts of it. And losing one substantial part of it, leading to an unnatural reset hour, will likely lead to a whole day loss.

I can see your point but this kind of seems a little... I don't know, out of the blue. Its a buff, I'll give you that but it does little to actually help with the IP problem I see and hear new players have. No new player is going to get on the Boards and say that they are having a issue because how could they? They would just get down votes from long time players that have a lot of IP and no real use for it other than to hope for new champs. I've always wondered two things:

  • Why is it that early games that are beat within a certain amount of time don't have higher rewards to the winning team?
  • Why is it that we only have 1 bonus per day? (And why is it that its almost impossible to even gain the amount in a single match?)

I've always thought that wins before the 20 minute marks should be quadrupled and the player should receive 50 bonus for the early win. (So a win at 10 minutes would be 90 IP and a win at 15 would be 110 IP, all the way to 19 which can give 124 IP). It's a bonus because the team was really good and should deserve the IP because at 20 minutes the enemy would be able to surrender. After 20 minutes, the bonus IP is gone and the win gives 6 times the amount, as when you get to 30 it will give 4 times and remain that way for the rest of the game. Surrender's should give the enemy a bonus 50 IP to the winners and up to 10 bonus for the losers (-2 if one player that says no). If you are down 1 player, you gain up to +20 IP for the surrender (-4 if one says no), +30 if its only 3 (-6 if one says no), +40 if its only 2, and +50 if its just the one person. This way, 70 minute games can give a better sum than just 150 as its rare to have them now and even if we don't buff surrender, they will still happen. The sum would be raised to 280 IP if you win, and 140 for the losers (as losing teams should gain half what the winner receives unless its before 20 minutes, then they receive three-forths).

There is only 1 bonus per day. We may get IP weekends ever 2-4 times out of a whole year but that's kind of it. We're on our own here and I wish the IP boost gave 200 rather than 150. Getting a champion should be a accomplishment but you shouldn't have to work for over a year to gain even half of them. As of now, there are 42 6300 champions (or 264,600 IP needed right there). If I were to gain 100 from a win and win 5 times a day, I'd have 500 + 150 = 650 per day. If I even want these guys (and just them) I'd have to play over 400 days worth. If we just raised the IP boost by 50 points, it'd take off almost 50 days worth of me needing to play. Which makes getting all the 6300 champions easier in a year and also means that getting other champs should be also easier.

Dr Poro2 votes

Well, this is not about getting more IP, it's about reducing the amount of frustration getting the current IP should cause.

The reason why short games gives less IP is simply to prevent IP farming. Riot is (justly) afraid that even in matchmade games teams could trade wins, especially during the low traffic hours where you meet the same people multiple times or in extremely high/low MMRs.

Rew7111 votes

That doesn't seem fair. Preventing people from farming IP. With just that, new players will never make up the difference older ones have. Just try making a new account and getting at least half the champs, you will see its not easy and you will have to skip getting runes to get that many champs within the year. With just the total amount for just champions closing in on 800,000 IP and you only get 250 per one win a day and at most 800 per day, it means that you must play for 1000 days at most. If you get a free champ or IP weekend that doubles your intake per day (so at most 1600 per day) it only takes off for those days and its usually only on weekends. It does make it less than 1000 days, maybe even less than 900 days but its still over 2 years worth of playing. I for one have been playing for 2 years and still have 42 champs left. Its nice to know its not 127 but its sad to know the amount is still going to grow and by now, I might have only 35 to get (or less) even if new champs didn't continue. Its not like when players got on here years ago and there were only 90 to get. There was a lot less IP needed no matter how you look at it and they were/are given plenty of time to keep getting more to spend on new champs. Its not fair that they can't just give it away, especially to those who would like every champ because having a full roster is much more fun than half of one. Earning champs is nice but I don't think many people want to spend years getting all of them, it makes the game less fun and as of right now, I'm starting to lose heart and interest in this game. There are those times I want to play Brand and yet I still don't have him. There are times when I wish I had Thresh Nami or Lulu but I don't have them. There are even times where I'd like to learn Ahri or Cassiopeia but I don't have them and have yet to try them (trying is nice but its nicer to get the mastery points as well).

Dr Poro2 votes

I agree that it's really hard to get a decent champion pool, especially since runes are so important to buy. I think mayor changes are needed to improve new player experience, but this thread isn't to fix it all, just to fix a small frustrating issue that doesn't have that much to do with improving new player experience, but rather just less frustration for all. If Riot wants, they could double the IP you get from FWOTD, I'd love that. But they probably want to keep the IP income low so some people will buy champs with RP.

Rew7111 votes

That's no excuse. Buying a champ with RP is better than buying a skin but its at the same token that all skins (which still out way the number of champions) cost actual money. Why would it be okay to even try and do this? Its more of the older players that will pay money for content. Not saying new ones will not pay, but it just doesn't seem right.

Doubling the win you get (which is 300 in total) would mean getting champions faster.

Dr Poro2 votes

Riot is a company. They just want as much money as possible. Whether or not it's unethical is not what I'm talking about here. Maybe it's better if you start your own thread about it to fight their policy. I think you may have some success, tbh. (I would support you)

For the sake of keeping it tidy, I'd this board to focus just on the FWOTD suggestion. I think it's better to have many discussions where each one is about one thing than to have one discussion about many things.

Phoenix Kotori 9 votes

Riot commented on this before and the main reason there against it is because allows and encourages people in certain play windows to double up on it, something people playing at other times can't get which isn't really fair at all. This was back on the forums though so I can't really find the source sorry.

How is it unfair? They don't get to double and get 2 first wins in 1-2 hrs. They just get once like everyone else for playing everyday; which is fair compared to some getting 2x in that time span and then not worrying about playing for 2 days and repeat.

Additional resets means riot has to plan for their to be extra server load just before and after the reset because of people who want to double up, rather than more even load from current system.

WarlockLaw6 votes

If the reset time is the middle of the night then it can't possibly effect server load in a negative manner as the few ppl who can attempt to "double up" would be the only ones on. Meanwhile everyone else is asleep like a normal person. Also if you are trying to "double up" you can only do so every other night. Additionally if the person is going to play at some point during the day then there is no need to stay up late just to get two first wins really fast.

Kubox4 votes

I don't get the "double up" argument.

You still have to play at least 2 games. Whether you chain them or not there's not a single difference. no one has an advantage. If guy A plays a game right before the reset then plays a second as soon as he resets, while guy B plays one game a day, they both play the same amount of time.

If anything, being able to chain both wins could actually be a good side : say you got something and can't play one day. If it fits your time schedule you can get your 2 wins so that you don't have to worry about losing your First Win on that day.

And don't go "this isn't fair to people who can't do it". You know what some people can't do? Play every single day at the same time. The current system isn't fair. League isn't a job. It's not a 8-to-5 shift were we always come at the same time. Some days we feel like playing in the morning. Others during the day. And some times at night. The current First Win makes this extremely hard to do, because playing at a different time means either giving up on it for that day or having to play again.

tl;dr Getting 2 wins in 1 sitting of 60 minutes vs 2 wins in 2 sittings of 30 minutes is the exact same thing. There's no such thing as an unfair advantage here.

Dr Poro12 votes

I don't really see why this is such a big deal. Yes, they can get it twice by winning twice in a row, but they'll still get it only once each day. I understand that it goes against the principle of playing atleast once each day. If they want to tackle it, they could add something like a 3 hour restriction incase you grabbed your bonus right at the end of one day before you can grab it the next day.

Terchio4 votes

Just make the switch at about 4 AM EST. Playing at that time is punishment enough.

Dr Poro1 votes

Well, you have to take into account that east and west coast are different. But yeah, it should be somewhere around that. On the other hand, Riot probably doesn't want to encourage playing during the night. Still, I don't think this is enough reason to do so as you can litterally get the same bonus after you wake up. If anything, the current system does, since it's required to sneak in an extra FWOTD (by getting it 1-2 hours earlier every day for half a month).

xReadyPlayerOnex1 votes

This is the real reason RIOT doesn't want a set time as they've proven they can't handle this kind of thing and would rather lie to us.. It could overload their servers IF EVERYONE logged at the same time for the bonus. However this could easily be done by staggering the reset by something as simple as the name of your character or which 3 champs you play the most. And it probably won't happen anyway.

Dr Poro3 votes

Do you think that everyone would suddenly play at 4 AM just to get their bonus early, even when they could just as well do it in the next 24 hours? Other than psychological delusion (aka. people thinking that it matters), there's no reason to stay up till 4 AM. Most other games have dailies that reset this way, I've never seen problems with them.

xReadyPlayerOnex4 votes

It's not doubling up. It's getting the bonus from one day and then getting it the next day... If you get it at 4 pm one day and 4 pm the next; it's the EXACT same thing if I got it at 11:59 PM and 12:20 AM. There's no merit to this counterpoint at all and RIOT's stupid for even suggesting it.

The bonus exists to encourage people to play DAILY not 2 games one day then 2 more 2 days later.

My opinion why we need this: Imagine a person gets his first win at 8pm? (bad with these pm/am things. I mean in the evening) Next day he can get his first win only from 6pm (?) but he has to go to work (etc), so he misses a whole day. This can and is happening very often.

Zoe Raviloli2 votes

That doesn't make since though, if he has time to play at 20:00, how would he not have time to play at 18:00 the next day.

pripustas4 votes

Have you heard of a job where you work night shifts one week and day shifts the other? Also there are lots of jobs where you work 14hours a day, and then have more days free. I had such a job, I would work for 14 hours 2 days straight and then have 3 days free. If you want to keep getting those bonuses, you have to keep schedule on your first win bonus, and if you cannot maintain it for one day, it's all ruined.

Durzaka4 votes

Take my plus 1.

Ive posted about this before, but didnt get any responses.

The way it works now, you are 100% guaranteed to miss out on at least one FWOTD every few days, because eventually it gets out of sync with your play schedule and you have to skip a day to get it on track.

Prozzak5 votes

You are not 100% guaranteed to miss out on FWOTD every few days unless the timer is > 24 hours. Since it is 22 hours it really isn't that hard to get a win every day even playing only 2-3 games a day. Also if people really wanted that first win so bad every day they could queue up a bot game and end it in <15 minutes themselves.

xReadyPlayerOnex4 votes

Thanks for the book. It is a cohesive and cogent argument that has no holes at all. It should be implemented. Hopefully RIOT will do something more than rework non broke champs and issue skins.

ARequestOfDeath3 votes

and have less ip? nope i disagree seeing how expensive runes are i need all the ip i need!

Dr Poro6 votes

Do you always complete your FWOTD at the exact moment it's on, even when it's 7 AM, next day 5 AM, next day 3 AM? If so, you should know disrupting your sleeping rythm for this is unhealthy and if anything, Riot should disencourage it.

If not, then you wouldn't actually lose any IP with it.

ltmetal3 votes

I have an additional proposed change. Instead of having a "First Win" bonus, have a "First Game" bonus. This will still encourage players to play at least once a day without feeling like they have to grind bot games or go 0-5 wishing they could just get that juicy 150 IP before they lose their mind, inevitably entering games on tilt or feeling disheartened in general.

There are edge cases where players might try to abuse a "First Game" bonus by throwing a game just to get his or her team to surrender at 20, but the advantages to that are partially mitigated by the already suggested change of giving players from midnight to 11:59 to get their bonus. I would also beg Rito to add 50 IP to the first game bonus if you win it, since there's already a long grind to get runes and champs. The system should be changed so you can buy a single tier 3 rune in one day of gameplay (average 2-3 games), so this slight alteration would be very welcome.

It Hertz When IP3 votes

Also want to note that in most every other game I've played that had some kind of daily bonus for logging in/doing something in game, that bonus resets at a certain time, not after a certain period. LoL is the only place I've seen the 22hr reset thing.

ValorAndGlory2 votes

Well most people I know that play league always play the same time everyday and if it doesn't look like they are going to get their first win with in two hours they queue up a bot game so that way the FWOTD comes off cool down around the same time that they started for it. The reason they can do this thanks to the 22 hour rest, they get on around 6 p.m. get the FWOTD by 8p.m. or a little later and the 22 hour rest makes their next First Win be available around 4ish - 6ish depending on when they get it. Besides if you are getting bored with bots start a custom where the point is that you play two matches with people with the sole point of the matches one side pretty much throws the game, the only hook to this is that you need at least 5 friends to play with.

Virgin Ray2 votes

On top of delaying your FWOTD because a losing streak, it can also be delayed because you didn't have time to play when it just came off cooldown

Lol you said cooldown, it's ok we all play LoL a lot

S2C2Xd9KOy2 votes

I really dont see the point. To me it just means that players who dont play much due to boredom or whatever can play 2 games a day and get like 380 ip. Like why fix whats not even broken.

Just seems like a qq post, down voted. Sorry.

Tsugaga2 votes

You also have to think of it from a business perspective. The FWOTD is meant to entice players to play every day, and someone who wants that bonus will likely play again once it's available. If it reset at a globally specific time, then the player could get 2 daily bonuses in the same gaming session and then take a break for 45~ hours and do it again.

Also, with the reset being the same for everyone, there might be a spike of players at that time and then fewer for the rest of the day. Using 10,000 players who only care about that one daily win bonus, they might all play right after the reset, and then all log off. With the reset being personal, those 10,000 players are instead spread out throughout the day, so League has a more steady number of players rather than a big spike for a short time.

I don't see it being changed due to at least these two reasons, then it also just becomes a hassle when you have to consider each server and player time zones.

Personally I agree with it being weird calling it the FWOTD when it could end up not being your first win of that day, but I disagree with it being global because I prefer it to be personalized for me.

Dr Poro1 votes

Have you read my post? I'm repeating myself here.

  1. In the current system, I personally don't feel like playing when my FWOTD isn't available yet. If it's available in 2 hours, I often just play another game until the 2 hours have passed because I'm afraid that I'd get bored of League before the FWOTD is back on.

  2. Do you seriously think that there's going to be a peak at 5 AM if that's the reset point? Yes, not everyone is in the same time zone, but it usually doesn't deviate more than 4 hours. 1-9 AM are not the peak hours. If the reset was at 7 PM, then yes, it would increase the peak. Also, how many people do you think are stupid enough to actually wait for that reset to get it ASAP everyday? Yes stupid, because it wouldn't matter whether you get it in the first hour available or the 15th hour, unlike in the current system where you'd lose 13 hours compared to the previous FWOTD reset.

  2. I have no idea, and I never said that's what I think/know will happen. I'm speculating, stating reasons why your suggestion might not be accepted by Riot.

Your idea is good, yeah, but you have to be open to all perspectives and all opinions, and not ignore people who disagree. When considering changes, Riot might think: Would this, and how would this, affect monetary gain?(Probably not) How much time and money is needed for this change?(Probably relatively little, though still costly) How hard would this be to implement?(Probably not hard at all) What reasons justify spending that time and money?(None really, player opinion) Is this needed?(No) How would this affect the number of players at any given time and over extended times?(Requires player data and analysis) How would this affect server load?(Requires player data and analysis) What the majority of players agree or disagree with this?(Unknown)

Regardless, I've always liked it the way it is now, and prefer to have it personalized. Not a bad idea though.

AbyssionKnight2 votes

In the past when this was suggested their response was that they didn't like encouraging people to play at a certain time of the day. After all, with a fixed time fwotd resets, the most efficient use of your time is to play a game or two before the reset, and a game or two after the reset. Then you get a high burst of ip, and can then choose not to play for an entire day, while still not losing any fwotd bonuses.

Helmight2 votes

I honestly don't understand OP's point. A lot of what's talked about is how much less time the current system gives - but doesn't it give more time to get the FWOTD?

Example: I get on at 7 PM, right when my FWOTD becomes available. I lose my first couple games (we'll average them to 37 minutes apiece), but finally win my third (same duration as the first two). It's now 8:41 PM, which means that my FWOTD tomorrow will become available at 6:41 PM. Assuming I get on League every night at around the same time at 7 PM, I actually have MORE time now to get my FWOTD the next day.

Meanwhile, under the OP's proposed method, my FWTOD would not be available until 8:48 PM the next day. My time is now REDUCED to get my win of the day, since if it takes me three games to get a win again, I'm now looking at a FWOTD that only becomes available at 10:39 PM. It's a cycle that just hurts the player, instead of helps them.

Maybe I'm not fully understanding the OP's point, but doesn't the current system do more the HELP the player than hurt them?

To be honest I would prefer it just had a 12 hour cooldown instead, So you can gain it from 12am -> 12pm and 12pm -> 12am

So what you're saying is... it wouldn't be the first win OF THE DAY? It would be the first win of half of the day...

They don't have to call it the first win of the day..

But its already called the First Win of the Day. Why would we change it? q.q

Free win is every 22 hours. It already is daily. Don't see the point of this suggestion at all. Also, you could play a bot game to get the free win, which reduces the time you get the win by 2 hours.

Please read the post before replying. But I'll repeat for you: By daily I mean that it resets on a 24 hour cycle no matter at what point of the day you achieved your bonus. The 22 hour cooldown is frustrating because if you don't get that win within 2 hours of the reset, your next FWOTD will start at a later time and every minute you drag it out is another minute before the next one will be available. This can happen either by losing a bunch of games in a row or by not having time to play at the time of the reset (people with a busy schedule that is not the same every day).

Bot games is a solution to this, but it's boring to most people. It feels like a grind and a game shouldn't be boring, especially a MOBA.

22 hours is not "Daily", you can, for example, win a match on monday at 00:01 then win another one at 10:01 pm getting the bonus twice a day.

For most people, it would be daily. If you really want to grind out 2 wins per day (with the 7-20 mins. it will take with bots - which is the best chance at a guaranteed victory), then enjoy!
