Leona? Ha just hook the adc or her. Flay will also keep your adc safe.

Braum? Ha even if he w's to the adc, you still open up the target late game and you bring more utility with dark passage. (Really saves lives unlike jumping in to save them)

Lulu? Hmmm can ult the adc I guess but squishier too

Soraka? Heals and all but brings little cc except for E

Janna? Okay gives thresh a run for his money in utility but squishy

I feel thresh is good in ANY situation if you are good with him. Against equally skilled opponents thresh should win due to his tankiness especially late game, peel for the adc is huge, and his freaking lantern to protect anyone caught. Thresh also doesn't fall off and blitz just got nerfed soooo

Thresh is jack of all trades, almost like lee. He's got pretty good peel, and pretty good disengage, and pretty good trade potential. However, he's not the STRONGEST in any of these roles. Leo's got better engage, Janna's got better disengage, Soraka or Sona make trading hard on the enemy team. So he'll always be a safe pick because of his kit, but wont exceed in anything ONE thing, which keeps him from dominating at any part of the game. And keeps riot from nerfing him :/

Sure, those are all things that could in theory beat Thresh.

The thesis is that Thresh crowds out other supports by being so good. I don't agree. I've never felt impotent when going against a Thresh. For instance, because Thresh can flay a Leona it doesn't mean she can't be played against a Thresh. If you're constantly in fear of Leona's E then the lane will go even and Leona can still use her ult to all in targets during team fights. Which is, in my opinion, better than Thresh's engage.

Also, you can't have it both way, you can't have Thresh defending against E's and actively seeking out landing hooks.

How about Zyra. She can block hooks with plants. She can harass the ADC from behind the minion wave. She can block lanterns with her plants. And if Thresh ever does go in she can burst him down super fast.

Sure, those are all ways to beat Thresh. For instance though, you can't have it both ways vs Leona. You can't defend against Zenith Blade and actively look for hooks. By picking Thresh it also doesn't invalidate her all in potential with R.

In any event, I don't think his current iteration is so overbearing that it invalidates picking certain supports. I don't think he's overbearing at all. For the sake of shits and giggles though, how about Zyra? She completely invalidates Thresh. She can block hooks with her plants, block lanterns with her plants, harass the ADC from behind minion waves, has a disengage you can't counter in the form of a huge aoe knockup, and if Thresh ever does want to all in Zyra will out burst him and provide just as much cc.

Yep. He does. You could remove any one of Thresh's abilities, and he would still be played just as much. He's that overloaded.

Then why does Riot not nerf him all around SLIGHTLY (maybe duration of q grab time). His damage is inconsequential it's the utility.

Yup, he does. But Riot would probably nerf Sona again before they nerf Thresh. Heck, even Blitz got nerfed before him (not saying he didn't need a slight nerf, though.).

The last patch notes for Sona nerfs was along the lines of: "well Sona isn't crowding other supports and has her fair share of counters, but when she doesn't face a counter she does well" Like, bruh.

Leona is better for an all-in engage comp, and she can fill in as a second front-liner if you are doing an AP top laner. Annie is better for an all-in engage comp as well, actually maybe the best support for that role. Morgana is better for poke comps. Also she provides the best anti-cc shield in the game and that's not something you can ignore when comparing the two. Lulu has her niche where she's better than Thresh when paired up with a hyper carry like KogMaw and he's tanking the world from the front line. Janna peels better and you see her a lot for that reason. Thresh can't disengage a team fight, he can only rescue one person with the lantern.
