Terminology tends to help reinforce ideas, so should we call bot/top lane different things?

Example: DotA has "Dire hard" and "Dire safe" lanes due to the length of the lanes from towers. League lanes have the same length but the topology of the jungle top and bot are different. It is much easier to be ganked top purple and bot blue because of Tri.

I did fancy the idea that, if they ever gave us the ability to rotate purple team's view, they could maybe add flowers or some kind of colored plants along the top and bot lane with top lane having one color and bot having another since top for one side would be bot for the other. So you could have "orange" lane and "green" lane or something.

the big problem with ever having a view rotation is that skill shots would go completely wrong unless you played at 0 ping.

With League having both side lanes with an identical length that does not depend on which side you're on I think top and bot are fine as names. If you need to get into specific locations the bushes and the general jungle layout, along with either top or bot, is typically fine.

Perhaps a better example where a new naming convention would be useful is in pro games when they do a lane swap. All of a sudden, one team's "top" is fighting against the other teams "bot", but they're both in the same lane.

I think you'd be hard pressed to change the terminology used, but I do think it'd be better all in all if it could be done.

That is a fair point I suppose. I guess my argument would be that the map isn't the problem here, but instead the role names need to be more specific.

The classic bot lane duo and the classic top laner, with the map not being uses statically anymore, would be better suited for new names.

Playing top purple side is more dangerous than top blue side because of that tri bush. Even if it is warded, it allows an avenue for the enemy to flank you more easily. Where blue side would have to be past equilibrium to be ganked reliably, purple can be AT equilibrium and still be ganked effectively due to the tribush. The reverse is true for bot lane.

You should be playing differently on blue/purple because your "Safe point" is at different parts of the lane. Blue side can be very aggressive without as much thought as purple which can be ganked unless pushed under their tower.

I agree with a need for new terminology, but I haven't come up with anything any time I try.

It's not the length of the lane but the distance from the tower where creep equilibrium is. Also where the jungle is more favorable. The Safe lane has the equilibrium closer to their tower, their jungle on their back, and the pullable creep camp to help side farm and control creep waves.

I think dota would also use top/bott etc if our lanes were symetrical. Easier to say top or bot, but since dire top isn't the same as radiant top, its annoying...easier for us to say safe and off lane.

We do have a problem discussing lane swaps in competitive play. When your Tristana/Janna go top, and your Ryze goes bot, Ryze is called your "top laner". Then if Janna goes bot, leaving Tristana to solo top, nobody has any idea what to call the Ryze/ Janna duo lane. Certainly it's not a bot lane, but it's not a top lane either.

Awkward.
