"We've nerf'd Sona to oblivion, other supports outclass her now and no one is playing her"

"...So let's release a ultimate skin for her"
you know, in the past Riot was critiqued for releasing skins and then nerfing champions afterwards. so wouldn't this be the better way of doing it? relax.
the art team has always said they operate without any knowledge of future balance or design changes. these things dont go hand in hand.

You really can't say that when it comes to reworks. If champions need new abilities, then the Art team needs to design the particle effects.
I also Recall that Riot decided to fix the Timing on Pantheon's ult pending the Dragon slayer skin. (which was effectively a nerf.)
That's one of the nastier instances of Riot supposedly waiting to nerf a champion in order to sell more skins first. They're making a distinct effort to avoid that accusation this time, and attempting to pre-balance Sona before her playrate skyrockets.
Except she was already balanced. They could've released this skin with her pre-4.13-nerfs kit and avoided these past 6 months of backlash and the profits they're bleeding because. Honestly, Riot needs a refresher course on business ethics.
Her rework wasn't a nerf, she was nerfed after her rework. Yes the art team made new particles for her rework, but they didn't know Riot was going to nerf her multiple times afterwards. Not to mention that pieces of this were released onto PBE in december as files which means that they had been working on it probably since the rework (they hired 6 different artists to make her tracks and they made 3 models for her I'm sure they started before her nerfs) on top of the fact that the first mention of DJ Sona was actually in May 2013 which was a whole year before her rework. DJ Sona has been a community idea since before May of 2013 in which IronStylus stated
I'm very pro-DJ Sona
I wish the quote was longer but he was talking about Popstar (at the time community named Kpop) Ahri and DJ Sona and how he liked Sona but not the Ahri idea.
Essentially though there was at least one person at Riot interested in making the skin happen a year before her rework. For all we know they came up with a concept, sent out her rework (because her rework came with a new TU and such) and then gave it to the art team to make before they started nerfing her.
Because her initial rework was a buff and not a nerf. It might have had longer cooldowns but she overall did more damage (because of the AA enhancement after her Q) and she provided more overall for her team.
Her rework wasn't a nerf,
Her rework was most assuredly a nerf. How about we count them up, shall we?
That's only Patch 4.13 alone. Obviously some were far more severe than others, but it's going to take me a lot longer to calculate all of the numbers, considering it was 22 total simultaneous nerfs.
51.6% Win rate "Unplayable" "Nerfed to oblivion"
51.6% Win rate "Unplayable" "Nerfed to oblivion"
The only way to take sona out of her spot as one of the highest utility supports is to litterally just take off her auras.
Highest utility? She has 1 damage, 1 defense (heal), and 3 utilities. Two of them are soft utility (E/powerE and powerW) while the other is her ultimate and her only hard CC?
I mean, she has many things in her kit. She might be overleaded with everything. But she actually doesn't have a lot of utility for a support. See : Janna, Alistar, Thresh, Braum, Zyra. I'd say even leona has similar/more utility considering her ult is long ranged and has aoe in it.
You are both arguing poorly, and often blatantly over or understating what the skills actually do. Sona has passives that give utility, and her E. If you aren't considering CC "utility" then her ult doesn't even count.
Secondly, Why would you ever play Sona over Nami? Better heal, Better CC, great movespeed buff. They've got very similar utility, only Nami's is flat out better.
Not gonna argue about nami. On the first point, I'll admit that was hastily written. About your question, I'd define utility as "everything that isn't about directly making hp bars go up or down faster or slower". That means everything accept Damage, Heals and Shield and damage amplification (And posssibly damage buff). I guess you could argue about a gapcloser... But that's irevelent for now.
Anyway, what I meant is that Q/powerQ and W are basically straight skills. powerW I'm not sure, it's not damage/heal, but It's straight defense (or damage reduction in this case). Mostly non intereactive and unidimentionnal. I'm not sure. E and R are a ms buff and soft-CC and a CC. They have no other uses (other than damage). All those, I'd call utility. You mention I'm understating what her skills do, but now that I've explained myself, do I still understate what they do?
About the "soft vs hard" utility. It was me improvising words. I was drawing a parrallel between a soft CC and hard CC. A soft CC is one that leaves some possibilities to the opponent while a hard just completely nullifies teh opponent. The same way, a soft utility would be one that doesn't completely changes the game (ms buff, the smallish wall of thresh's ult) while a hard utility would be one that radically changes the playing field (walls, dashes, grabs, complete zone control (like Azir's ult or tower)). I'll admit I made this distinction on the spot, I know it's totally unofficial.
added : In leona's case, I considered her very long range ult as "utility" since she can do it from really far outside the fight basically making pseudo-global range a form of utility. Now that I reread it, I'm not quite sure it makes sense.
They already removed her auras in patch 4.13, try to keep up. You're 6 months behind in patch notes.
51.6% Win rate "Unplayable" "Nerfed to oblivion"
Brand, Galio, Rumble, and Rammus all hover around a ~51% winrate; they're not exactly enjoying themselves atm, now are they?

Rumble gets banned in so many NA LCS games and not just against C9, I think he's in a pretty good spot ATM.
Let's clear some things up, because this thread has kind of gotten out of hand with people throwing random thoughts with little basis in reality in regards to this champion.
I'm going to use two classes of supports to compare Sona to. AP casters (Annie, Karma, Zyra, Nami, Janna, Lulu, Vel'Koz, Morgana, Soraka, and even Zilean despite the fact nobody plays him anymore anyways), and the rest (Alistar, Blitzcrank, Leona, Thresh, Braum, and Taric). I've excluded niche supports for obvious reasons.
In comparison to ALL other supports: Only Zyra has lower base HP Sona is tied with 4 other supports with 325 (The lowest possible) base movement speed She also has THE weakest heal, base and scaling. The second weakest shield, base and scaling. Only Thresh's is lower base, but that is still an AoE shield, infinitely scaling, with the teammate saving component as well. The LOWEST amount of CC pre level 6. This might be debatable compared to Zilean, but he doesn't require using another part of his kit like Sona does to actually utilize the CC. I'm referring to her passive. Only Annie, Zyra, Vel'Koz, Morgana have lower mobility in terms of skills, and those flaws are supplemented in their insane amounts of CC and AP ratios. There's a reason why you don't see AP Sona mid anymore.
Compared to AP casters: The weakest AP ratios across the board. P 20%, Q 50%/20% for on hit Aura effect, W 20% Heal, 30% max heal, 20% Shield, R 50%. There are some more % per AP ratios on her W and E but those are still rather laughable, considering Sona shouldn't build AP anyways with her other trashy ratios.
Compared to the rest: Yeah try poking these f'ers out of lane. Getting caught by one ability from any of them is almost guaranteed death, and considering her HP and Move speed, getting caught is actually REALLY easy.
To those of you who say that her win rate is still high: Yeah I've actually got nothing. I don't know why her win rate is high. Maybe us Sona mains are just smarter than the rest of you. But that's not true, because we still play her.
Kidding on that last part, but I'm a Sona main. Or at least I was. I haven't played her since this last set of nerfs, which mark the ninth straight set of nerfs for the champion without meaningful buffs. I'm still a sucker for punishment and will be getting this skin, but I won't play her in ranked until she gets some serious changes.
Riot has decided to nerf her strengths in her AP ratios and AoE healing. Having a healing ability that only gets strong when a teammate is dangerously close to death, with a maximum cool down of 6 seconds (W CDR is 10 at all ranks, 6 seconds assumes 40% CDR) is a joke. You literally have to wait until the fight is almost over, compared to Soraka who can literally heal an ADC to 100% 3 times over in the span it takes Sona to to it once, if that.
Her ability CDs are too high for what little effect they have. The only redeeming quality in her kit is her passive. And by that I mean Power Chord W. At base, it is literally half an exhaust.
Tl;dr Read the above paragraph. Sona's in a really bad place right now. I used to consider myself a Sona main. I used to play her AP mid, AP support, Utility support, and even tried her as ADC a couple times. All to much success. With her trash AP ratios, punishing CDR, GARBAGE base stats, and overall mediocre state, I haven't been able to touch her in ranked play. I'm a sucker for punishment and will still get this skin, but I don't accept this 'shiny!' ultimate skin to change how I feel about her.
edit: actual very little basis WTF ENGLISH?
This . So much this.
Compared to Thresh, there is very few reasons to pick Sona besides to maybe enjoy her cool ult animation.
Thresh does everything Sona can do and hope to do, except he does it better.
Why would anyone pick Sona over Thresh? Or Sona over Leona, Annie, Braum, it's a joke.
If you limit the comparisons to champions that are actually strong META picks (Basically exclude Zyra and Zilean), Sona gets outclassed by every single champion in every phase of the game. I honestly think the only reason why her win rate is high is because she's pretty brainless. No actual need to aim anything other than her Ultimate. If you actually hit your Crescendo, it's pretty much a green light for your team to go in and do shit. Like "HERE THEY ARE, ATTACK". This kind of kit requires very delicate balancing, and we've seen how strong Sona can be. In addition to everything else, she's extremely awkward to itemize, often wasting gold potential on overcapped CDR items and any AP if you're thick enough to believe that AP bar. I understand she fits the niche of "brainless champion," but I'd be more than willing to sacrifice some of her ease of play in favor of an actual reason to play her.
Lets also not forget that Nami does basically what Sona can do, except again in every way better.
They are in many ways the same champion, except Nami synergizes SO FUCKING GOOD with a poke ADC (Cait, Ezreal) and can peel nicely while also having great disengage and engage with her ultimate.
Some of the comparisons of Sona to other champions look biased. Like comparing Sona's healing to Soraka isn't fair because Soraka is all about her healing, but she lacks immediate hard cc and ally ms boost.
Btw, I'm not saying Sona is overpowered/underpowered. Just wanted to say some comparisons aren't very accurate.
It's a very fair point, but let's look at what else Soraka does, just for comparison's sake.
She has an AoE silence, potentially as early as level 1, but realistically at level 6, which also has the potential to stun. She has her incredible passive that also makes her heals on wheels. Her heal is on an incredibly low CDR as well. She is easier to itemize than Sona, considering her skills don't actually need much AP to be good, and thusly can just itemize for the passive support that she needs to be. Her AP ratios are better on literally every single skill, and the only level 1 stat that isn't better than Sona is her move speed, which is the same.
I can continue with the comparisons on literally every champion. Sona's supposed to be a jack-of-all-trades support with damage, peel, sustain, and utility, but is literally outperformed in at least 3 of these by every single other support in the game, and by all 4 on any champion that doesn't have a heal.
I may be biased, but my bias is still based on facts.
The second weakest shield, base and scaling. Only Thresh's is lower base, but that is still an AoE shield, infinitely scaling, with the teammate saving component as well.
Just want to point this out, Sona has the #1 weakest shield, not 2nd.
Sona: 35/55/75/95/115 (+ 20% AP); +10/20/40 at level 6/11/16; 1.5 second duration Thresh: 60/100/140/180/220 (+ 40% AP); 4 second duration
To beat Thresh at level 11, she needs to tag at least 2 other allies to outmatch Thresh's heal, but that's assuming herself and both of them are taking damage within that immediate 1.5 seconds.
They would have been working on this ultimate for at least a year, so this decision wasn't instant.
OK, so flip the order and it still works:
We've designed an ultimate skin for Sona, so lets nerf her into oblivion so the other supports outclass her. That way, when everyone plays her for the ultimate skin, the other supports won't be as jealous.
OK, so flip the order and it still works:
They know the playrate of the champion is going to skyrocket when the Ultimate skin releases, if anything they are being proactive with balance rather than having to mega nerf immediately.
.... You're saying that Riot is nerfing Sona JUST so people won't play her as much?
I...
Yeah that makes no sense.

Yeah that makes no sense.
No, they are making extra sure she is adjusted for all levels of play because of the huge influx of people that will play her
Can you explain a bit more? I seriously don't see how nerfing her makes Sona suitable for bronze --> LCS plays.
Can you explain a bit more? I seriously don't see how nerfing her makes Sona suitable for bronze --> LCS plays.
If the art team is focusing all of their stuff onto Sona why wouldn't the balance team also notice her more?
Off Topic but
he sobs suddenly as Riot focuses on others and leaves him in the gloomy corner.
No. The problem is that with so many more people playing her, Riot is probably scared she is "sleeper op" A bunch of top level players may pick her up because of the skin and possibly realize her potential. Once everyone realizes this specific thing you can do to make her godlike, everyone will play her and she will need nerfs.
Is this scenario actually going to happen? Nope, She's complete shit. Literally the weakest champion in the game. Is it still a smart move? Eehh..Maybe. If they give her some actual goddamn power later after they get their forums destroyed from the influx of people pissed off they bought a 30 dollar skin for the weakest champion in the game.
P.S. by "Weakest" I don't mean "Worst" Her QWE are all complete hot piss, worst support by a mile. However, her ult is still a Game Changer that can win teamfights. So she isn't really unusable. I'd honestly be cool with them changing her ult entirely if it meant we could have a kit that wasn't garbage. Oh, also her passive is somewhat decent if you spend a lot of time dedicated to learning to use it properly.
Regardless of Sona's actual balance/game health...
As someone who has used Sona and Janna pretty exclusively for support since Season 2, I just don't feel like playing Sona much right now. I wasn't a big fan of switching from persistent auras to one-off buffs to begin with. The nerf train she's gotten since then?
I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on a Sona skin right now. Even with the sale it'll still be more than a legendary skin, and I just can't justify paying even that much money on Sona at the moment.
Sorry Riot, but it looks like I won't be buying this ultimate skin either. I'd rather not sink even more money in when I'm this unhappy with your balance and design decisions lately anyway...
High win rate does not mean good. Sona is pretty much nerfed into oblivion except in a few rare cases. So yes she has a good win rate still, but that's because she's only used in very good matchups for her.
lets pretend sona wasnt cancer to lane against when she had 55% win rate
-sona main
Yeah, 10 ranked matches with her over 2 seasons. You sure are a "Sona Main" dude.
Hmm, I think he was pretend quoting a sona main, not saying he is one.
Let's also pretend she has great defenses against hard engage tanky supports, while we're at it.
She's not totally nerfed into oblivion. She does have more HP than a caster minion now...
The only time I've ever seen Sona effectively be a good support is when the enemy laners are afraid of her.
There's never a good reason to be afraid of her unless you're at 100-200 hp or something.
Pick up the phone
Cause I fucking called it
Riot nerfed
to oblivion because she had a 54-55% win-rate but they didn't nerf
,
, or
when they had practically the same win-rate for all of season 4? While her poke was pretty strong in lane, you could just take any champ with hard engage (
,
,
, and
) and completely destroy her. She wasn't even a top pick/ban in the LCS.
The only reason why she holds her 51-52% win-rate at the moment is because of the type of champ she is. As LemonInYourEyes stated, she is a fairly low skill
champion. All of her abilities bar Crescendo are auto targeted and Crescendo alone is such a strong ability that if you land it it makes up for her otherwise lacking
skills and base stats. Additionally, she maintains an above average win-rate because of her ability to snowball. If a Sona gets ahead and manages to get Lich
Bane she will do high amounts of damage to the opposing ADC with her Q->Power Chord, winning her ADC the trade most of the time. While this damage is less
than what she had before, it's still significant and to prove that she has around a 64% win-rate when she builds Lich Bane. Despite all of this she still has a weak
heal, very little CC pre-6, and is incredibly squishy. She also gets outclassed by
,
,
, and
as a support/mage.
BTW Riot nice job on the skin but too bad Sona's not in an optimal spot thanks to the balance team.
I am not going to deny that Sona's rework has put her into an awful spot, and that she needs huge changes to be healthy for the game.
HOWEVER.
Saying she is not picked is a flat out lie. She is picked ALOT. Specifcally in low elo.
Why? Because scrubs dont know how squishy she is. They take one power cord, and tink "Oh shit wtf that damage so op", and then run away and let her do whatever she wants.
In high elo, Sona is a worse version of Nami, with slightly better teamfights IF she doesnt get nuked from offhand aoe. This is also only true if Sona builds a stupid amount of AP for a supp. You cant build utility on Sona. You NEED AP.
Why does she need AP? She is worse than literally every other supp in the game if she does not build around 250+ AP. Specifcally nami can do literally everything she does better, aside from damage reduction. This means very limited choice in utility items.
The only utility items I would recommend are Banner, Ardent, and MAYBE Frostqueen. The only one I get regularly is Ardents, and that is because usually I have multiple targets who benefit from AS. Banner is only good if the enemy has aoe magic damage, or a fed katarina. You can pray banner stops her from penta'ing your team. It also gives you some good splitpush, so keep that in mind. Frostqueen is self explanatory. If a slow will actually be meaningful, buy it. If not, scrap frostfang as soon as you dont need it anymore.
You can only take 2 at the most to remain relevent/do anything that Nami couldnt do better. Ardent will usually be your best bet, and going full AP after words is kinda mandatory.
Your gonna NEED sightstone, Lich-bane, and mobi-boots. Everything else you buy NEEDS to have AP in some form. You also need cdr.
Riot apparently believes she's only obtained a small nerf.
How can you call her op when she gets nerfed every few patches. I got almost every sona skin but will pass on this on. Slaybell and arcade are my favs
The fact that Sona is absolutely worthless in the face of every other support, now, is simply unacceptable.
She was my main. I loved this chick. But now I'm either CC'd to hell, or completely out poked. If I do manage to get some poke in, I go OOM.
Sona can no longer poke effectively, does not help her lane partner farm, is stupidly easy to gank, and cannot peel, outside of blowing her ult.
Riot, please bring this champ back to viable status.
She needed those nerfs, people who actually played against sona knew she had a lot of damage. Also the nerfs didn't do much to her at all. (I am a support/jungle main)
She needed those nerfs, people who actually played against sona knew she had a lot of damage. Also the nerfs didn't do much to her at all. (I am a support/jungle main)
It's not the issue of needing the nerfs or not. It's the issue that her and certain others are targeted for nerfs when certain others aren't ever nerfed (in a meaningful way, if at all).
Why do people keep saying she's SO nerfed?
I still feel effective both in and out of lane as sona, and next patch she is getting what I would arguable call a buff.
And I know for a fact I'm not even that great of a Sona player. This is ridiculous. And her new skin is so rad
It's the fact they're nerfing her for being unhealthy botlane while champions like
continue to dominate LCS and high elo gameplay.
He also does what she does, but offers more.
