Daily Reminder Promos Serve No Real Purpose & Are About Pure Luck Of Not Getting Trolls/Flamers

Title.

The problem with promos is that you don't feel accomplishment when you win them, you feel relief that you didn't get a troll or flamer. This is NOT OK because in a game like league whenever you move upward the latter you should feel accomplished not relieved that you didn't fall short and get a troll or flamer on your team.

Winning promos is a relief, not an accomplishment

This is the number one problem. When I win my promos I don't feel like I improved or accomplished anything, I feel like I got purely lucky.

The problem is that you don't improve or don't try to improve. Every game you should be focusing on improving. Focus on what I could've done better than on what my teammate is doing wrong. You can use every game to improve, and if you aren't, that is on you not Riot.

Ok so I have to improve on not having trolls in my following 2 games? Yep ok.

Yes! Dodge is a great option when used in tandem with third party resources like op.gg. This is how to improve your odds and combat the luck factor.

It counts as a "loss" but its not a ranked loss. Give the links I've provided in this thread a read! You shall find the answers you seek mate! GL on the Rift!

Let me paint a picture for you:

You are in promos for gold 5! Your current MMR is slightly higher than the division average and you've been getting +30 LP for wins. You also won 2 in a row to get to the promos, but the promos get trolled and you dodge. -3 LP. You queue up again and book a win and get back into promos. Promos get trolled again, you dodge again, you book another win and come right back. This happens 3 more times and you are cursing your luck. But, now you are on a 6 game win streak. COOL! This time after dodging and getting -x LP and booking win number 7 in a row (that's 5 games after initially getting to the promos, hmmm, HHHHMMMMMMMM) you get a pop up message a lot like the ones that tell you that you've earned a promotional series. Only this time, it tells you you have been promoted to gold 5! You still played the promo series really, you played and won all 5 actually! The system just didn't officially recognize you as being "in" promos, but did recognize that you deserved to advance and you instead skipped right past all those troll lobbies straight on up to gold 5. Happens all the time mate.

Except you would have to have Plat 5 MMR for that skip currently.

7 Wins in a row =/= Plat 5 MMR from S1......

If you dodged every single promo game and won games there after you wouldn't move up for about 30+ games. IF THAT. The chances of hitting a 30 game win streak? Pretty much 0.

Not to mention the time it takes in between those dodges, and the fact that gold and under do not have long queue times. It's a massive tax to expect the player to pay with a 30 min wait timer to not play with a troll, that you may or may not know is going to troll you until you get into the game.

Your painted picture is an extremely poor example.

But I'm just a guy who finds the current ranked system pretty bad considering it doesn't really have anything to account for personal play and all the stats that Riot has now to actually track that. Relying on your team to "not feed" and being light enough to carry is pretty shitty for a "competitive game". It's why I much prefer to just go take my spot in the FGC since I can only rely on myself and that is accurately reflected in my ranking and standing. (Before your next tirade, yes, I understand that over the course of time your own play shows through based on fact A.....yada, yada.....you have to at least admit that any ranked system that recommends playing 100+ games for an accurate rank is pretty bad....)

I am currently performing an experiment that will address and at least partially debunk your statements here. I can definitively prove my hypothesis and confirm the "picture I painted". It will take some more time to do so, although the skip part I may be able to share today, provided I win these next few games. I will get back to you when I have accomplished this.

Honestly, It won't change a thing for me.

It doesn't matter if a D1 player can do it, Realistically the question is can a Gold player do it, someone who lacks the skills of Platinum but is better than silver. The real answer is no.

The real answer is actually yes! If you understand the system, your ability to utilize it to your own advantage is significant.

Solumindra2 votes

Except it isn't lol. No one who should be in Gold 3 could ever win 30+ games in a row, while dodging all promo games and get into Gold 5 without winning the promo. Someone who belongs in Gold 3 is going to start having trouble winning games about 10 games into the MMR inflation you are trying to emulate and will eventually lose multiple games if they even manage to emulate and start playing win G2 level players while chilling in S1.

Once again, Of course that wouldn't be a problem for someone who has a main in D1. But it is going to be much more of an issue for someone who belongs in G3-G5.

Also shame on you for using an alt and destroying the integrity of the ranked system you are trying to defend....like, hypocritical much?

There's a problem with the ranked system in general, and it's how dependant it is on luck, specially in the lowest division, regarding AFKs, trolls and so on.

You being a good player can shift those odds, but how many games until those odds manifest in real numbers?.

Food for thought:

In an experiment as simple as a coin-toss, the odds of each event happening are 50/50 (ofc), but for you to sum all events and actually see an actual 50/50 frequency of events, it would take an average of 400 tries. Which is to say, for the "true" odds of an event to manifest as such, it takes 400 hundred repetitions, and this is with a -simple- experiment, now imagine how much dumber it gets with a lot of variables.

Since we established that, for you to reflect your odds of winning based on skill, on three particular random-sampled games, that's ridiculous, pure luck.

The MMR system has it's flaws, and Blizzard has stated that for them (which uses a similar system to LoL) to accurately calculate the MMR of a player, that player must play at least 100 ranked games (which is ridiculous, of course).

So in short, if you -don't- have the skill, you can get lucky but over time, with more games played, you will migrate to your proper division.

If you -have- the skill, you -must- get lucky, but even if you don't, over time, with more games played, you will migrate to your proper division.

Ranked depends not purely on skill, but also on luck, and then on playing a LOT to nullify the luck factor.

playing alot does nothing to to address the luck as your rank is a rolling function not an average. I was plat 3 a few months ago random match maker shit on me for 3 weeks straight went like 37 losses in 40 games drop straight to gold 5, back up back down, gold 1 last week gold 5 today, I PLAY ALOT. All that matters is when you "stop" playing. I can play 4000 matches be diamond 5, and then go on a 50 game losing streak and drop to gold 5 yet have played 4050 matches matches at that point and been diamond 5 for 4000 of them 4050 matches. the following week go on a 50 game win streak shoot up diamond 5 again. Yet if i stopped the week before i was gold 5.

Again rank means nothing unless you are d1 or bronze everything in between is a huge crap shoot i played vs silver who play better than diamonds i played with diamonds who play worse than a silver. system has too much luck and easy ways to manipulate the rankings. I'll give you perfect example, my friend account was diamond 4 oh i forgot to mention that he doesnt play much so his buddy who is a diamond player uses it "mostly" but everyone one in a while my friend who placed each season in high bronze jumps on to shit the bed for a few matches in diamond and in between then the diamon guy jumps on to play a few, he mostly plays after the rank has dropped though because he likes to get shorter que times and stomp his lane opponent.

THIS IS VERY COMMON NOT RARE and is just one of many exploits that makes the rank system meaningless.

Troll for Trump4 votes

Then there is the beginning of the season... So most games you lose arent much. No big deal right, you can regain the lost lp you can retry the promos. But what about the placement? Boom you had an afk, suddenly you drop from gold 5 to silver 1 for your starting rank.

Orangesilk2 votes

To be entirely honest, a 37/40 losing streak does seem to fit into the "Seeping down to your proper rank" thing. You were probably WAY above the rank you should be via luck, and started seeping down appropiately. (Which, I may say, it's easy for us to notice when we lost a game due to someone in particular, but it's much harder to tell when we -won- a game due to someone in particular on the other team being a douche).

To recognize the system is luck is also to recognize that a lot of your hard-earned-wins were luck too.

It's a rolling function, but it averages out over time with the MMR system. MMR crashing sucks, but your skill level should adjust it appropiately over time.

"Should"

I have no issues playing in non-promo's. I've had to do the bronze 2 to bronze 1 promo's four times, I didn't lose many matches (if any) while getting back into promos, but in promo's I kept losing.

I am climbing, but ridiculously slowly. It has gotten to the point where I can play with a brand-new champ for me, carry the game, and win. First time with a champ.....

Saying that I'm a bronze scrub etc. doesn't excuse the fact that matchmaking is broken for promo's.

Osmigos16 votes

I'm afraid of promos. They stress me out; they don't excite me.

Personwithhat4 votes

Actually the problem lies not in the promo's themselves, but in the matchmaking system that accompanies them.

If I lose my promo's, it's more like I "lost" the same amount of games. More often than not, I'm still only 10 lp or so away from them again, so I'm cool with redoing it.

However, the most ridiculously broken part of the experience are the people you get matched with.

I just recently attempted to promote to silver. I won 4 matches in a row (my usual lately), and 2 of them in promo's.

Guess what? I failed. I lost three matches in a row after that because I got trolls, idiots, and AFK's.

In one of them a irelia got fed 10 kills by 10 minutes. In mid. AP irelia mid. How can you feed that as Malzahar.

I was support. Guess what? We lost the game. Sigh......

The main issue is after asking, the Irelia was on her way UP (in promo's), while the people she was fighting were on their way DOWN(close to demotion).

You should only have to play promo's with people who are promoting as well. As it is now, more often than not, I'm paired with people who are about to get demoted, versus people two ranks higher or going up themselves.

Basically, it's MUCH , MUCH, harder to win a promo than it is to win a regular game, because you're being paired (typically) with people who are on their way down. Obviously, the best of say, bronze 1 will meet the worst of silver 5, but then it just degenerates into a goddamn luck fest.

Either you face more noob silver 5's, or you have more of them. That's the thing that decides the entire match. It degenerates into a "who gets fed more" fest.

Trolls, flamers, most of those I guarantee are NOT the people who are in their promo's, but the ones who are about to be demoted.

Since EVERYONE cares about their promo's , make it so that ONLY people who are in their promo's are matched together.

It might make the promotions harder, since everyone is giving their all, but I'd MUCH prefer losing legitimately rather than losing due to the following:

1)Trolls/Derankers....."Top or feed" as last pick -> "K" goes riven support..... 2) Flamers/Morons

Final example: "Yo I'm galio. kass, can I have blue? You don't need it with your nether blade" "STFU the blue is in MY jungle. So hell no." "WTF? Dude, you obviously aren't a good jungler if you don't know what sharing blue with mid means." "Stupid bronze scrub. I need blue more than you, Galio doesn't need it at all." "Yes I do....." "Get chalice then lol" ".................."

10 minutes into game: "OMFG GALIO WHY YOU FEED BRAND" "I didn't have blue , so he out-poked me and I wasted it on shield so less CS. And their jungler ganked me 6 times. Six....you ganked 0. I only died three times and I---" "!@#$ Idiot. No blue for you, you'll lose it anyway." "Dude that doesnt help just gank my lane" "Lol report galio for feeding" "Wtf?" Jinx in bot lane: "Yea, stupid galio" "Jinx your KDR is 1/6/0" "I have more kills than you moron" "But you have three more deaths" "Idiot" "......."

Nearly end game: Me: 13/8/8 (Ult rampage) Kass: 1/0/2 (ganked....not at all..) Jinx: 3/10/1 (Skilled feeds....)

End game: Kass gets 6 more kills, each one a rift-walk KS from me....so his final kdr is "good"

Post-loss: "Fucking galio fed brand GG report unskilled" Brand was 8/10/4 (I managed to win lane back after he overextended)

Hm, no surprise that I got a tad aggravated after this happens not once, but several times in a row, and ONLY IN PROMO'S?

I have never seen as many trolls, flamers, and complete morons as I have in promo's. Even normals have people who play better when they're just screwing around.

Just fix the matchmaking. IDGAF if I do promo's or not, just if you keep them make it make more SENSE.

(Did I mention that with a high enough mmr you're with noobs vs people, say, silver 2? GL with that.....)

Sorry? I went galio, 12/2/20, while bot was feeding the !@#$ out of the enemy team.

Me and an amumu carried ,and won.

Do you understand that I can easily "stomp" my elo?

Just that no matter how much you win your lane, you will never be able to do shit versus someone who has 5 + more kills than you

Irelia with 10 kills by 10 minutes, how the fuck do I top that? I didn't play super-risky so I didn't get as many kills.

BTW I sincerely HOPE you've noticed that whenever you're in promos, you're playing vs the tier above you (at least)

WHAT I SAID WAS THAT: The tier above you is so close, you're playing vwith the people who can't do shit, the trolls etc. that are deranking.

You just get caught along with them. It's a question of who has more noobs/trolls, their team, or your team.

At 90lp I'm fighting half-way decent people, typically people on their way up.

At 100lp I'm fighting people in the next tier, who are going DOWN.

Skill difference? Massive. And not in my favor (unless it's them with more noobs, those games are so sadly easy)

Promos are powder to the eyes. The only important thing is improving the MMR. You win more than you lose -> you'll obviously climb. And if you have a good MMR you're gonna be in a situation that you can't have more than 50% winrate at a certain point and lose promos, because :

promos lost = 1 win 2 losses / 2 wins 3 losses 1 win, back in promos : 50% win in the best-case scenario.

LadyRenly4 votes

If you get trolls every promo, doesn't that mean its physically imposible to climb, no matter how good you do otherwise?

A Miss Fortune5 votes

It's not even the trolls I'm worried about, It's the poor players especially in my elo. I was ranked Silver even after only winning 3/10 of my placement matches, which I personally did extremely well in and I've been having a ton of difficulty winning games as my team will never ward, never upgrade their trinkets, will never farm, they will siege for hours on end, never group up, and even when they're behind they won't farm and simply act like the game is a 5v5 team deathmatch.

It feels like I have to either carry my team single handed and 1v5 to victory, or pray to god my team won't feed 20 kills before the 10 minute mark. Sure I'm not the best player and nor do I think I ever will be, but unlike these players I try to see my errors and evaluate them to become a better player. If I die I try to think what I did wrong and what I need to improve on. Whereas they will get caught out a billion times trying to farm without any wards and just say "gg katarina SOO overpowered".

The trolls are just something that seals the deal for me, fortunately I've rarely encountered one though It just makes me think "Why am I even playing Ranked, just to roll a 50/50 chance for my team to not be troll feeders."

Frikgeek2 votes

Well, it's silver. Carrying your team 1v5 shouldn't even be hard considering how bad your enemies are. The only way to lose in silver is to die from cancer mid-game after witnessing silver mechanics.

A Miss Fortune2 votes

I've gotten extremely fed on my own, was the only person warding on my team, and the only person with decent farm, but due to how poor the rest of my team was and because of how hard they all fed the enemy team, it was basically impossible.

Jeanne fan club1 votes

I've lost games while 11-0-10 in silver 1 because of how terrible my teammates have been, hell I've lost a lot of games while legendary because of the trash I get stuck with. Below are my stats with my main. Whenever I get her I roflstomp my lane and press my advantages. When I roam, I let my adc or top laner take a kill here and there to snowball their lane, only to watch them do VERY stupid things and lose lane regardless. You can do your part in a game, but its your teammates doing their parts that you have no control over.

A Miss Fortune1 votes

I TOTALLY understand where you're coming from. We're not like the best players in the world or anything, but we're above the skill level of players in our elo. Though even when we get fed and carry as hard as we possibly ever could, they just feed and carelessly lose the game. Even when you try to help and give your teammates advice, they'll get salty and act as if you're trying to insult them.

Oddly enough i had a match last night i was 4th pick 5th pick was in final game of his promos we needed a mid and a support he says, let me mid please i am in my promos. Well I play mid alot and on another match making bender and my MMR has tanked but i say ok you have mid ill support even though i am most certainly a far better mid than him. Turns out he wasnt very good didnt buy a single magic pen item vs a team that stacked MR and he lost a close game that we most likely would have won had he let me mid :P

Correct, some games are just losses. Janna F kennedy (one of the best 2500 or 2000 players on the server, Master tier and challenger at one point IIRC) once told me back in season 2 something like this, its not verbatim, but its close:

"When you play league, you will automatically lose about 40% of your games due to an enemy player getting fed, a teammate feeding, a teammate throwing, and afk, or other circumstances over which you have no control. Likewise and conversely, you will also automatically win about 40% of your matches for the same reasons, a teammate gets fed, enemy has an afk or throws, etc. The key to your destiny lies in how you approach and perform in the 20% of matches over which you can have a direct impact in the result."

I have rarely heard anything truer when it comes to league. What it boils down to is: are you gonna shine in those 20%? Will you do everything in your power to make those wins? And since you never know til the game ends which one of these percentages it applies to, will you play hard EVERY time assuming THIS game is one of the 20% you can affect?

JudasX8 Silver2 votes

Damn those words are deep. So if I'm doing the math right 80% of games are a flip of the coin to either side and 20% of games could come down to me? It feels like that's off a little bit because smurfs can win games like nothing every time. I would say that 40% thing is correct but shouldn't stack with the other 40%. If this were the case you have 60% of your games in your own hands.

I really like how they do challenger promotions, although under like high diamond theres not really a practical way to do that in every elo. Someone suggested being promoted at 140LP which is roughly the same as winning 0-100 LP then 2 games after that assuming you gain 20 LP each, which would almost resemble the 2/3 promotion series.

The thing I like more though is, once you hit for example 97 LP, you don't need to win a game after and miss out on like 25 LP that you'd gain from that win, considering it would only take the 3 lp you need to qualify you for a series. So if you were at 97 and got 25 for a win, you'd be at 122, instead of being at 100, losing 23 Leftover LP and being awarded a series that would make you win 2 games, which would in total probably put you around 160 LP anyways which is a higher risk of not making promotion because if the 140 LP promo system were in place, you would've been promoted after the first win (122 LP + 18 LP win =promo).

This seems really confusing now that I'm reading it, so I'll type it in a math-y way?

How it is now : You're at 97 LP for example. Win a game, +23 LP. It would only take 3/23 to give you 100 for your series, wasting the rest. Then your 2 promo wins WOULD have given about 25 each if thats what you average, which would cause you to have to gain about 170 LP total because of the 20 you lost for going from 97-100, then 25 each promo win.

Promotion at 140: You're at 97 LP, you win a game and you're at 120 instead of flat out getting a series. Now all you have to do is gain 20 more LP, and you're promoted. That should be ONE game assuming you win it. With the system we have now, that would have to be TWO wins. The promotion at 140 way basically just eliminates the possibility of wasting a lot of LP and having to win more games than you should for promotion, making it much harder and putting far more pressure on you to win a series since it can so easily be lost.

I really am sorry if its confusing, it was surprisingly hard to attempt to explain it. Everyone has been there though, at like 98 or 99 LP, knowing that you have to win a game for like one or two LP, its such a frustration and waste to put in that effort for like 2 LP.

I still think going from for example Gold 1 - Plat 5 should be either promoted at 180 or remain a best of 5.

This just seems like a thread for people to present anecdotal evidence and complain about their individual experiences. I'm not a big fan of the ways promos work either, but 'everyone' has to go through them, including the people that are above you in rank. So as a metric, it still kind of works.

People should really be using a thread like this to present viable alternatives rather than vent about the bad games they've had that everyone else also experiences. It's just as likely the enemy team has a "z0mg tr0ll" or whatever as it is likely your team has one.

I can completely agree with this. I mean I spent forever trying to get to gold 5 this season, took me more than 6 tries to get through because I would always win 2 then lose the rest, it was ridiculous. I have never hated promos more than this season. I got to g3 last season, and it shouldn't take me 6+ goddamn tries to get back into at least gold

Why not have a counterpart of promotion? Like a.. probation? out of 3 games, losing 2 will demote you. (For divisions. for tiers, best out of 5 ofc) yea it's still luck oriented with trolls but it's better than insta demote after getting trolls

Well technically, they do serve a purpose. Whether or not that purpose is justified or really good at all, is up for speculation and debate. (Not really the purpose they serve is stupid.)
