Ezreal Q Awkwardness & Solution

In the next patch, Runeglaive's AoE will only proc. on monsters and the empowered AA will not be converted to magic damage. This means Ezreal's Q will remain an AD skill and he won't have any interest in this item for other reasons either.

Ezreal's R is also getting nerfed pretty heavily from a .9 to a .6 AP ratio. It's not surprising since people hate burst and are unwilling to buy much defense or stand behind minions or tanks. For compensation, his Q's AP ratio is buffed by .1. Assuming you normally hit 2-3 with your ult. in teamfights, it will take A LOT of poke to make up for this and also reduces the engage options for Ezreal's team. Overall, it probably places him in a worse state than before any of the Runeglaive shenanigans.

I would like both styles to remain viable and I think one of the big stumbling blocks is the Q being physical damage. My solution would be for it to become magic damage when Ezreal has more AP than AD. If it turns out to be a little too strong as AP, the ratio can be lowered a little but this would overall lead to a much more consistent and smooth AP Ezreal.

What do you guys think abotu this?

This topic isn't about reflexive nerfs by Riot and I don't even think Runeglaive was abused. Ezreal's performance has been pretty sub-par everywhere despite the high ban rate and he still lacked many key qualities of a good mid-laner (good waveclear, CC, roaming power) in addition to the time he needed to scale. There were many counters like Talon which brought him to under 40% winrate and he also struggled vs teams with tanky frontl-lines like Maoki blocking/reducing most of his damage.

Anyway, the topic is about having the damage type of Q shift to physical when having more bonus AD and to magical when having more bonus AP. I think this is quite elegant and any number tweaking after can iron out potential issues.

I think they're removing his Waveclear item, while also nerfing his Waveclear that was built into his kit. Historically, when we've seen a champion abuse an item who was nerfed while the item they abused was nerfed, it has really negatively impacted on the champion. It looks pretty dire for AP Ezreal.

That said, I am pretty surprised to see a buff to the Q's AP Ratio. It implies that Riot wants him to be about poking enemies down and less about bursting them with his ult.

I think players will transition back to Lich Bane, since it lets them get more AP, more single target scaling late game, and frees up a summoner spell. I just don't think that Runeglave is going to be worth the stat trade-off.

Edit: it's worth pointing out that this might be an attempt to get AP Ezreal's ultimate to do the same damage as AD Ezreal's, compensating for the difference in AP per gold. If that's so, you'll probably want to get a Deathcap ASAP.

Even in Diamond vs an AP Ezreal, you see ADCs STILL delay a defensive item like BV until 4-5 offensive items.
