Make Honor level progress visible?

Eternal Torment··82 votes·4,250 views

I Love the new honor system, it offers more choice and it feels Kind of nicer in my opinion, BUT something i really feel like lacks is the overview of the Progress between 2 Honor Levels.

For example, if i am Honor Level 2, how do i know when i can ascend to Honor Level 3? where can i see how close i am to fall back into Honor 1?

It would be a lot easier if we had some Kind of Progress Bar showing, for example, you have a bar with 5 lines, being the honor Levels. If the Indicator moves towards the left, you are closer to Honor Level 5, if it goes right, you are closer to Honor Level 1, and each one of the 5 lines being said Honor Levels so you can not only see where you are with the Honor Level, but how far you have progressed in said Honor Level.

If there is no Progress-overview, i would very much welcome it if there was one.

And if there is one, and i am simply missing it, forgive my stupiditiy and i'd welcome it if anyone told me how to view it.

Cheers and have a nice game.

There are millions of people playing league, not one person has posted about getting honor 3. Some people play all day everyday as their job (streamers) and still play more for fun, and they don't have it. It's a myth atm. It doesn't exist yet in the game. They'll probably do some data analysis based how honor is being awarded to determine the optimal rate at which you should progress or increase in honor given that it's an entirely new system. Not too quickly so you reach 5 honor and stop caring, not too slowly so you it's unattainable for anyone one but those without lives, and also in way that makes people who act more honorably overall get higher honor than those who just play a shit ton and happen to get more honor because of number of games played.

ON PBE not live. No one has it live as far as I know

I know.... I'm saying it exists, tho it may not be live..... I.E. riot has figured some sort of path out for it already...

Riot said that the progress would be much faster on pbe than on live servers for testing purposes

I'm just saying there is a system in place.

It's most likely time-gated, like chests. You can play 1k games in a month, and it doesn't mean shit. If you play 100 over 6 months, you probably get the same progress. The fact that everything about honor is hidden from the players tells me that it's a bullshit system, and it's got limiters in place.

NiceTryVi2 votes

This is especially a problem when you realize that you don't get your end of season rewards unless you're at least honor 3, either...

RavenMagus1 votes

At this point I am relatively certain that being awarded honor at the endgame lobby does not actually matter at all as far as progress towards the next honor level goes. It's simply too likely that people give out honor for things that have little to do with being honorable. (Carrying a game and being in a premade are both more likely to get you honor than actually being honorable.) It's what's needed for the loading screen borders once people are at Honor 3, of course, but I don't think you need to collect end of game honors to get there - simply spend a lot of time without being reported.

At least, that's how I believe it works.

One thing's for sure: achieving level 3+ is a matter of time, and we haven't even had the honor system out long enough to achieve it.

aspects11 votes

people got 5 on pbe somehow, so idk exactly how it works

korg0231 votes

The reason we dont see progress is that there is no progress, it doesent matter how many honors you get or how many games you play you just level up when its time if you havent been punished. That is why honor is irrelevant at the moment and i really stopped to care :)

Riot said somewhere I think that they don't want people to grind for it like it's IP.

Although a little "You're halfway there, keep it up!" message would be nice.

MrryZ3 votes

They have indicators that you're making progress with the random key shard gifting but yeah other than that you're right Riot has officially released why they don't want to make progress visible at this moment and it makes sense.

I genuinely don't understand why people are so adamant that they need to see their progress.

Spice POWAH1 votes

The key shards, I believe, aren't an indication of progress, they just appear because you're not honor rank one.

MrryZ1 votes

Source on this? I'm pretty sure it's an indicator that you're still earning honor as it doesn't really make sense if someone is honor level 2 but gets reported every game to still be earning shards.

"Honour explained" video pretty much said that. Key frag drops regardless of whether or not you win now, they kinda just drop as long as you're playing the game. Though atm the key frag drop is changed so that it behaves a bit strangely, sometimes it will go at long periods without drops and suddenly give you 3-4 shards in 1 go, or frags would occasionally just appear in the loots without any notification; however typically key frags drop when you log-in and the game will make sure you know you've been a good boy recently by blocking the screen to tell you that.

That said, as stated, "getting key frags is not an indication of progress, they just appear because you're not honor rank one." Key shard drops is only tied to the Honour system in that its drop rate is connected with it, but otherwise the 2 are separate systems; one does NOT need to get honoured in order to receive keys, they are still dropping at random with a cap just like before.

Also, getting reported will not drop the Honour level, but getting punished will (low priority queue is an exception to that rule I think, as in it's not counted as a punishment by the Honour system). Key frag drop rate is I think halved in Honour level 1 and crushed into none when at Honour level 0.

Honour will be earned as long as you play, getting honoured only means you'll level faster than just playing. Also if everyone in the same team honours somebody after the game, then everyone receives extra bonus to their Honour progression, it's pretty much done so as a "honour everybody after a very good match" (though this is still not stopping people from asking "where's the option to honour more than 1 person or everybody after the match?").

What is wrong with grinding it? How can i impact badly my games with being nice and honorable? JESUS!

Karfuss11 votes

Not having any indication of progress, in a progression system, is developer code for terrible calculation and limiters put in place.

It's very probable, by Riot suggesting that it would take a great deal of time, that there are time gates in place to encourage continued playing. Streamers who play every day for weeks on end do not have Honor 3 yet, famous ones being honored by randoms every game.

If someone had it, we'd know it. So I suspect someone playing 100 games over 12 months would have Honor 3 in this system, and someone playing 1000 games in a month would not.

Scary Door3 votes

Exactly this.

The only reason you would ever keep a reward system hidden is because it is designed to not truly be "progressive" and is instead a time-sink element.

For example: Let's say there is 1000 'points' needed to achieve the next level of honor. You receive 1 'point' every time you are honored up to a maximum of 30 per week, you receive 2.5 points every week if you haven't been legitimately reported beyond a specific threshold and/or you engage in positive or neutral play, if you receive a certain amount of honors in a given 30 day period you receive 5 bonus points... etc. There is always a hard cap to the number of points you can earn per week/month so that even if you are honored by all of your teammates every single game many times a day you will not achieve the next honor level any faster than another player per se.

What I showed above is an example, but I am guessing that's actually kind of close to reality, because if there wasn't some type of cap---similar to what there is with chests, then someone would have hit honor level 3 by now... particularly those that stream and receive 3-4 honors per game, times 15 games per day.

BOTTOM LINE: It's actually a pretty poor design. Why? Because if players aren't seeing regular progress they will become less engaged in the system and overtime the incentive for good behavior becomes less appealing, particularly when they see their favorite streamer playing 15 games per day and getting multiple honors yet not progressing.

Obviously those that designed the system are great at math and programming, but never took a social science course in their life and most certainly didn't have a social science specialist, psychologist or sociologist help in the basic architecture of the system.

Douglas Funnie1 votes

Riot specifically said there is no cap on how much honor a player earns per day....

ntbcool1 votes

honors is different from scary door's theoretical honor points.

Karn Bishop5 votes

People are already avoiding giving out honours in part because it feels like doing so is worthless.

korg0231 votes

Same, i used to be very excited for Honor but now when i dont even see progress it feels just bad and worthless i really dont care anymore if im honored or not. Riot is going to miss great oportunity with this system if they dont change something real fast.

Hey, this is a good question, but we actually very intentionally did not include any sort of progress indicator for Honor levels. Here are a few reasons why:

  1. We didn't want to anchor people on the "grind" to honor levels. By not having progress indicators, we wanted to root the reinforcement for being sportsmanlike on the feedback you get from other players (the honors), not any artificial motivation from being "close to the next level".
  2. Our behind-the-scenes systems which determine honor level ups aren't simple. The types of calculations we do to determine if a player is ready to level up take into account their holistic behavior across many games, and don't lend themselves well to being surfaced in an "XP bar"-style system. Anything we surface here could also warp behavior around trying to "minmax" the most honor points, which really refocuses it away from the point of the Honor system - play good games and you'll make progress.
  3. We wanted to have a few discrete levels in Honor, since bloating the number would make each feel less meaningful. However, we wanted players to progress over the course of a season or half-season, which means that progress to the next level would necessarily be fairly slow. We didn't think it would be a great experience to reinforce this through some progress indicator.

For example, if i am Honor Level 2, how do i know when i can ascend to Honor Level 3? where can i see how close i am to fall back into Honor 1?

You can't see how close you are to progressing as there isn't a perfect calculation for that. They also didn't want it to feel like a Grind or have people begging for honor.

You don't fall unless you get reported...

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

Either way, it feels like a fruitless grind to even attempt to get to Honor 3 and let the rest of us know how long it takes to get it. I don't think people are going to beg for honor that often, probably the vocal minority that will ask for it.

MrryZ3 votes

Why are you even trying to grind for honor anyway it should be a passive rise not something that you're trying to maximise gains with.

TonyTonyMordecai1 votes

But in that passive sense, how do I know if I'm close to reaching the next level?

Sukishoo4 votes

Since it's passive, you're really not supposed to know. Knowing takes away that passive style and adds more of an aggressive style because you are trying hard to make it there. Where as, in a passive style you play along and just happen to Hit that mark after a certain match, so it feels more like a rewarding surprise.

MrryZ3 votes

Holy shit this needs pinning in every honor progress thread. +1

Sukishoo3 votes

They have mentioned that it should take the average player around 2-3 months or so to reach level 3. So if you are consistently playing then you'll get there in time.

Automated Riven2 votes

getting reported doesnt mean anything. You dont fall unless you get punished, (in other words unless the reports are valid)

judging by my constantly getting keys I am doing ok and I know I have been reported a few times unless my teammates who were saying they were gonna report me didnt actually do it.

Sukishoo1 votes

Well that's more so what I meant, is that if you get reported and punished then it will make you fall to Level 1, and if you have it again while there you drop to Level 0/Dishonorable.

I have been reported a few times unless my teammates who were saying they were gonna report me didnt actually do it.

They might not have. I've run into people a lot that say they will, and, I will admit some times there are a bit of a validness when they say it but I've never been punished once.

Nomad Sol2 votes

And have you realize honor 3 is a myth? Lmao.

DJMason881 votes

It has been said countless times on statements like this that leveling up is supposed to take a long time (2-3 months). It is supposed to be season-long.

rtbf2256182412 votes

Just to clarify: You can't gradually progress backwards. The only way is by getting hit with a punishment and that's supposted to drop you by 1 level.

As far as i understand at least.

DRAGOON Burst2 votes

I've said before in a previous post when it came out. They should have a popup notification that gives you encouragement and that you're insert progression there.

Boop Daddy 1 votes

Key frag gifting?

Players honoring you?

Lol.

ntbcool1 votes

key fragments aren't given as you progress, they are just given randomly if you are atleast X honor level.

Player honors happen every game, but it still doesn't even give a vague idea of how close you are to your next level.

Lol.

Boop Daddy 1 votes

Both are signs of honorable behavior.

Honorable behavior increases honor.

But is there a need for the bar? like for all we know there is only an honor lvl 2 and the other are fake...we were just trolled it's not like anyone managed to get to lvl 3 or even 1 on live servers or will

Stephen The G1 votes

yep riot will just set a date then honor 3 will be unlock then after some more timne the others and on and on

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

I actually have a sneaking suspicion that there's a significant time component. I think they don't want you to be able to grind honor, so it's probably largely based on how long irl you go without reports and things. It might be awhile before we see level ups with honor, as a result.

SSG Elmo1 votes

Someone mentioned this when the QnA for the new Honor system came out and they said they purposely left out the honor system level progress so that people don't grind extremely hard for lvl 3,4,5 and beg for honors, the honor system is a season long leveling system, as long as you dont get punished you'll get leveled up to 3/4/5 whenever riot decides to do it

iDemacia1 votes

They've already said they don't plan to show the honor system progress at all in regards to levels. I should be able to find the red post if you want

FilDaFunk1 votes

Rito did an FAQ when releasing the honour system. One such question was if there could be a visible progress bar. They said the system isn't as simple as gaining points towards higher honours, that the system is more complex.

korg0231 votes

I was very excited with new honor system but after a while when i cant even see my progress i care less and less with each day. If this continues i will totally ignore honor system and just skip voting since i dont see it does anything but waste my time even if that time is like 2 seconds.

Ztoka1 votes

I'm going out on a limb and will say this. I think the reason we aren't allowed to see a progression bar w/ honor because it moves so darn slow, if people saw how slow it moved, they would feel the system wasn't worth it and the normal troll behavior would resume. Shut, I think that will happen sooner than later anyhow but w/e. It's something that is supposed to be a back burner bonus. Not like mastery where you can "grind" it out.

BlueBilberry1 votes

To be honest, I think Riot is still working on the honor idea behind the scenes and is trying to determine what the "ideal" should be for each honor level. Unfortunately, and our Western education systems know this, people do like to have a sense that they are working towards something.
