Bringing back old champions before their rework

I think we should bring back old champions. Call it "legacy" or something, like legacy Aatrox and allow players to actually play these old un-reworked champions. It was said that champions get changed to keep the game constantly fresh and new like patches, but it was also announced that certain champions have been abandoned on their balance, like Ryze and Azir for some time. I believe we should allow these un-reworked champions back in the game, and not balance them just like Ryze and Azir. In any case they do get out of hand from item changes or anything like that, they can always be quickly patched.

I believe this is the best choice, bringing players back who enjoyed these champions with their old memories, and ultimately allows more fun for players. It's argued that leaving these champions around could potentially leave unbalanced champions and mechanics around, but if you simply look at the way it is now, there are already numerous champions they require a lot of work to be good. For example, Annie hardly ever sees LCS play, or Azir is not easily balanced for SoloQ. If we can accept that certain champions will be out of balance for a long period of time, then we should also be able to accept that un-reworked champions too can be out of balance for a long time.

My ultimate point here is that if we look at all the champions now as they are, it's clear many champions are ill suited for SoloQ or LCS and need work on them. They will never likely see a lot of play in either of these categories, and we accept that for the most part, so why can't we allow un-reworked champions in the same state?

What are your thoughts?

better yet why not make unreworked champs exist with reworked champs. so we can choose the champ we want. (i dont mean the old veigar ult vs new veigar ult either its more of old irelia vs new irelia)

A better idea is to just stop changing a champion's role upon rework. Good reworks are Warwick, Taric, and Gangplank when they keep their playstyle and their kits stay the same for the most part. Terrible reworks are Galio, Sion, and Aatrox where their gameplay and role on their team isn't even the same after being reworked deleted. Galio went from bursty, tanky, self healing mage who happens to have a melee auto attack to tank who happens to scale off of MR. Sion went from a roaming middle lane burst mage to a tank. Aatrox, the worst rework to date went from being an auto attacker to an ad caster.

I'm not saying any of these champions are bad. Most of the reworked champions are fine. There is a problem when they could have been released as a new champion under a different name and no one would have said a thing about the similarities with their original though.

I loved playing ryze. His very first version. Would be cool playing him again.

Sadly, Ghostcrawler already confirmed in an interview with WIRED that Riot no longer has access to older champions.

Oh man I would play the heck outta old Kat. I played her so much and she was for a long time the only good mid laner I knew how to play (besides Zed but I suck at him now)

Once she was reworked, I couldn't play her at all. It just wasn't the same, even though the concept and kit was similar and had abilities that did the same thing for the most part, yaknow? I know ultimately it was for the best (ex: Fio and Taric/Urgot) but obviously there were people like me who enjoyed playing them for how they were before, OP af or not, and so when they're different now, it just sucks for different reasons but sucks nonetheless. I wish I had played more Ranked and more Kat in Ranked before the change lol.

Honestly I don't see it happening. It'd take a lot of time to get all it all sorted out and done, and they'd have to ensure everything still worked and that the old code still worked and could run in new code/updated system same with the models, I don't know if they'd run in the client we have now. Plus to make the most of all that effort they'd either need to know lots of players would take part, and/or keep it up for a long time. Otherwise is it worth the trouble of all that for like 1-2 weeks of it?

I'm totally down for it in a normal (legacy) mode. Not in ranked though

There’s another big issue with this. They don’t just remake champs to keep the game fresh, but some had kits that had conflicting identities, or had incredibly unhealthy mechanics. Some reworks and champs won’t feel as different, like Nunu Warwick.

An example of the first is Urgot, where he had abilities that wanted him to be a long range shooter, but his ult would suppress himself and put him in the middle of the enemy team, depending on who he ulted. Riot saw this as conflicting, because he’d want the damage to snipe and stay out of enemy range, but the durability to survive wherever his ult placed him. Riot felt Galio and even Sion were similar, as their kits and build paths didn’t always synergize very well. But that one is definitely debatable and has been a hot topic before...except maybe Sion, most consider his rework as good.

examples of the second would be Yorick and Poppy, who had kits that were to the point of them being dumpster and they were not allowed to be on the free champ rotation. Yorick’s old ghoul spam was obnoxious for players to play around, as he would just spawn one and didn’t necessarily need to do anything else. I think I saw Yorick once before his rework, after starting in February 2015.

The Poppy example was of one who was a fighter/tank I believe, but built to assassinate. Why? Because of her ult. It allowed her to ignore the entire enemy team except one. So with this style of play, Riot hit her hard and sought to rebuild her kit in a healthier way.

Perhaps the nature of Aatrox’s and Swain’s kits were in this category, because of either draintanking, especially in Swain’s case who could ult and just stand in the enemy team, or a more binary nature, like old Aatrox, where he either could stomp he enemy team or be absolutely useless.

Most of these reworks, elements of the old kits are there, though perhaps not to the degree old fans enjoyed, and some more than others, like Nunu and Warwick. The other big issue with this idea now is, as a video posted in this thread states, Riot doesn’t have those anymore. Data and code was essentially purged. Sorry.

No. This should bot be a thing. They were reworked for a reason.

Let a legacy client be created but hell no not in the base game. Just lets make that legacy client and let them legacy people use those accounts and play their old shit but there has to be a way for riot to make money so maybe its a monthly fee of $5 to use the legacy client.
