While it usually is, if you see that the enemy ADC has one item and is 0/5/4 and their "support" Xerath is 10/3/0, please do not focus the ADC. ADCs are usually considered powerhouses for DPS, but if they're extremely behind but another one of their squishy assassin/mage teammates are extremely fed and burst you way harder, please, focus that person instead.
ChaosReyn4 votesI will also add, there are plenty of times where even "focus the tank" is acceptable. If you and your team simply aren't a position to attempt to get at their backline, then you have two safe options, both of which essentially boil down to "pick at the frontliners."
Option 1: continue to kind of just poke/siege the enemy frontline until one team or the other attempts a hard engage
Option 2: attempt to obliterate the enemy frontline (after a bit of Option 1) and get out before the retaliation.
Option 3 (the "bonus"): Attempt to hard engage on the adc without any regard for the game-state, get dumpstered for going out of position like a boosted monkey, and throw the game.
TMek71 votesyeah many times where no one focused a charging Garen because he's a 'tank', even if he built near-full AD I feel like people just believe the hive mind of 'focus the carry' or 'dont focus the tank' because its the common belief, that might've been true back in season 2/3/4 but things are different now, a carry can't really 1v3+ unless theyre already ahead ...expect maybe Riven lol

plus, it feels like a lot of marksmen never fall behind that far. you just dont have the luxurity to ignore them in most cases, since they still deal considerable damage, and they tend to power spike with 2 items already these days.

Just had a game where I went 2/7 as Ashe, but still won. J4, Veigar and Varus tried to focus me down early in fights, but since I was standing at the back, well protected by Alistar, they had to use a considerable amount of resources, and by the time they've reached me, they would've blown all of their escapes, and ended up dying to our fed AF Darius who got a few free hemorrhage stacks on them because they ignored him while trying to kill me.

its a matter of target access imo. yes, generally speaking it would be dumb to spend every resource on your team on the marksman. but if you can take him out quickly without too much efford, its still worthwile.
he will always be a priority target. shutdown gold is a thing. marksmen 2 item power spikes are a thing. he can very quickly get back into the game if you dont focus him down every single time.

Every goddam game...
and that´s one of the great things about playing support. Not only are you behind in lvls and gold but you will also get hunted down like crazy because of this. A lot of engages are inescapable, so your positioning doesn´t really matter ( often you are just expected to put yourself in danger because you are the support and therefore expendable ),
you pop like a balloon, so that even in the rare occasions where your team tries to help you, which almost never happens because everyone is too busy with themselves or the adc, you still die.
Seriously, I have never seen champs like J4 or Vi helping me disengage. They just keep standing right next to me, save their cooldowns, run back, then walk in circles for a few seconds just to then dive the enemy backline while being outnumbered.
And people ask me how I can be frustrated after a won game.
