If the game is soo popular why is there Autofilled?

The best Role to carry a game and is mostly played by support main or people who just want to win games. Remember back in the days with team builder there was a pop up that showed "We are currently in need of a support" Queue up as a support for a quicker queue time. I literally lost my game because someone dodged and they put a silver 5 as a mid laner and I was stuck with Guardian jhin bottom lane.

You even advertised Clash Tournament, meanings that you know that there are still people playing your game and have alot of confidence that it could work out. But why is autofilled still a feature?

Proportions.

If everybody in the world played this game, and we had 7.6 Billion Mid Lane mains to only a couple hundred everything elses, Mid Laners would either never be able to play or virtually always be autofilled.

EDIT: Jeez this post looks nothing like what I originally replied to.

there in lies the problem, they dont do anything to make other roles as enjoyable. THere are few support champs as compared to what can be played in mid lane- such as assassins + mages. + they need to make support more enjoyable in some way, that doesnt mean make it easier to get item 3069 item 3401 item 3092 it means make a fun concept that isnt just being a baby sitter. When a kill is had bot lane most say good job to the adc not to support even tho they almost do more than 50% of everything such as defending, initiating, and warding for that one player. Most people wanna be in the spotlight not forced into the sidelines.

Well that runs into another issue. I'm all for Supports being the playmakers bot lane, but all playmaker Supports, Thresh, Blitz, Leona, many Mage Supports, are overwhelmingly hated for having more say in how the lane plays whenever they are stronger than other Supports and Marksmen. We won't be able to see high power playmaking supports with our current playerbase and their tendency to whine the moment a Support locks them down.

There are too much supports that do the same thing which means that some are unplayed more than others. for example if you wanted to be a healer you would most likely choose soraka over nami in that regard, while yes nami has more cc but the skill ceiling is far higher. SHields? would you choose janna or sona? obviously janna. even tho sona is far more versatile in terms on what she offers but you get the point.

Well this is an issue with specialization and generalization in champion design, an argument where I strongly side on the side of specialization. To illustrate my design beliefs, Soraka should be the premier healer and if you are looking specifically for a Healer, you should always pick Soraka, but in that regard if you want to focus on other strengths, you can pick Nami. Actually it's funny you mentioned Nami and Sona since they're both very generalist and really do occupy the exact same niche as each other, but Nami is always better.

Anyway to sum up, Supports (and champions in general) should be designed to exaggerate their differences and their niches so we don't have the exact same copy paste bot lane every game.

It also doesn't help that some folks treat their support negatively. Even on the boards, people claim it's the easiest role and kind of take shots at support mains. Who wants to play Oracle when you can be Batman?

Me personally though I have always been like that, I like support personally but only at higher elo.

I was just saying, I think there is a negative perception of supports. I enjoy playing support every once in a while, and I've seen my ADC freak out when he feeds or I accidentally "KS" (like KS is a thing).

You right.

Why would we ever get to a point where mid laners would "never play"?

Current distribution is about 24% mid laners and top or support being the least popular at 16% depending on elo bracket. That means that if everyone was only given their primary role and there was no autofill, mid laners would play two out of every three games support players play. Queue times translates into [average game time + pre-game lobby and loading]/2.

However, keep in mind that every player is forced to choose 2 roles and not one so all we need is to push 4% of the players from mid to their secondary and a few from other roles into jg/top and queue times would be fine without autofill.

Do realize the scenario I made up is cartoonishly warped to make a point, not to reflect reality.

Which was a poor decision on your part because you warped reality too much that your point fell apart

It illustrates the point pretty clearly if you have the capability of understanding that's it's a made up scenario.

No, it just showed your lack of understanding about autofill and riot's intent when they implemented it into lower tiers.

Here is a graph of queue times for when autofill was added:

https://am-a.akamaihd.net/image?f=https://news-a.akamaihd.net/public/images/articles/2016/june/DQU/graph-queuetime.jpg?v=1

Notice how queue times went UP for the majority of the playerbase when riot extended autofill. This is because autofill in lower ranks was never about decreasing queue times, it was simply an ill-advised attempt by riot to give players their secondary pick less.

Show me a game where supports are most picked

When WoW has 14 million players, supports were least picked role.

FFXIV least played role support

PoE least utilized class support

The list goes on, no one likes playing support

To quote DotA 2's Bastion announcer:

"Nobody likes to play support, yet everyone wants to win."

Because playing support is the best way to gimp your elo if you're solo.
