I want a champ that counters divers while possessing high damage, like Yasuo does against Ranged

Hexs Fortune··18 votes·10,370 views

Yasuo is a champ that heavily counters ranged opponents, while also possessing tons of damage.

  • His E makes it difficult to land skill shots against him and quickly closes gaps with enemies

  • His Q allows him to knock up enemies through minions, reducing ranged advantage

  • His W obliterates any ranged ability against himself and any teammates behind the wall.

  • His R teleports him into the melee range of anything knocked up

  • Finally, his passive provides a frequently re-charging shield, specifically designed to reduce poke damage

I want a high damage champ that does this sort of heavy countering against melee AD divers and assassins

You could play Poppy. She counters a lot of divers since the strongest ones are the ones with multiple dashes, but her w works best when the enemy has to use their dashes in quick succession.

Edit: It's because you get a much clearer indication of when they're going to dash, and can easily guarantee you'll interrupt them. Whereas someone with only one dash gives no such indication. You still counter them, just not as hard.

Not really since it only blocks one.

Sometimes that’s all you need to ruin a combo.

She's better against them because you know when they're going to use another dash.

Poppy can only block one dash per enemy, you know.

Then youve basically ruined champs who depend on mobility Irelia Jax Fiora

like yasuo isnt that for ranged lol

Yep. Which is why if you someone with one dash uses it before you W, you don't get the damage and cc from your W. If, however, they have multiple dashes they either have to use in quick succession or don't get to use again, you get a clear indication of when they're going to dash again.

Hence she's very strong against Riven, who has 4 dashes in her combo and must stop it abruptly or take the W hit, Yasuo who tends to dash in and out a lot and can't control the distance, Lee who has to throw out his Q first, etc.

Heimerdinger is the number-one “don’t dive me” champion. That title used to be shared with Irelia, but then she got reworked. Nasus and Renekton are also very difficult to dive.

That being said, I don’t think you’re looking for a top laner here. Mids who handle dives well include Lissandra, Aurelion Sol (learn his combos first), Zyra (theoretically), Cassiopeia, and Malzahar.

Old Malzahar used to counter them. Now he lacks the damage and isn't a tankbuster any more. He can hardly kill anyone 1 vs 1

I recently have picked Malzahar into Yasuo , and done well. I just farm as FAST as possible then step WAY back. As far from him as I can be at all times. I don't feel like I counter him, but AT LEAST I can manage to farm, and not feed.

Old Malz used to have lane presence, trade potential, and roughly 80-0 all in potential with a full combo that couldn't really be avoided that early in a 1 v 1, especially since flash + ult has been a go-to combo for years, so all you need to do is set it up and press two keys after getting within ~1100 range to nearly guarantee a kill if they were just a little bit damaged beforehand. Additionally he had a huge AoE % max HP pool that did up to 8% max HP per second from base damage alone.

You can play annie vs yasuo. Feels great since her last aa range buff (to break his shield). Also, he cant block her w.

Poppy Counter them harder than Yasuo with range.

At least against Yasuo you can outskill him or scale and be more useful/revelant.

Illabethe8 votes

Poppy has far more counters than Yasuo. Anyone who doesn't dash is potentially a Poppy counter when played correctly.

flibitydoo2 votes

actually things that don't have mobility get punished easiest by poppy, speaking as someone who plays a lot of poppy, if you don't have mobility, it becomes very easy to land Q, E and R which are usually avoidable by mobility.

and the counters she has aren't real top laners, they're ranged ones that get outscaled since they set their team behind a tank/frontline.

Poppy becomes weak if the meta/fight becomes less about all ins and more about siege and poke which cripples most non-sustain tanks.

Illabethe1 votes

Depends on who it is that has immobility. Fighters can get dueled, and often beaten. But, sometimes that's a long drawn out duel (Nasus and Poppy have trouble killing each other, Darius generally shreds Poppy about the same rate she shreds him)

And, Mages generally don't get killed by Poppy. If played properly you never get close enough to the mage to actually kill them, or if you do, the CC you into your E, and get away, and keep poking.

I play Zyra , and if I get killed by Poppy, there's something wrong.

flibitydoo1 votes

it's not about the fact that mages can't get killed by poppy

the game isn't laning phase and the game isn't 1 v 1 dueling

if one is playing poppy and must lane top against a mage, the win condition for poppy is to just not die and get whatever farm she can scrounge. Assuming that happens, then walking out of laning phase, poppy's team has a frontline, the mage team doesn't, the typical 5 v 5 teamfights (mid, baron, dragon, the jungle) become really easy since the mage team has no meatshields to stall out anything.

Illabethe1 votes

:) That's not actually always the case either. Tank supports are far more effective at living than Poppy as a front line, and and there are significant jungler tanks as well.

And..... I'm not talking about laning phase either. If Poppy tries to front line vs Zyra..... Xerath, etc.... she's going to die. If she tries to attack Brand, she's probably going to die.

It doesn't matter if they are support..... top..... or mid.... or even jungler (I Zyra Jungle). If played correctly.... they still shut down Poppy.

But against divers, how many seriously don't have a dash to get into range?

TheSingularity1 votes

Even then it's a pretty easy skill to bait

LeBlanc Rose1 votes

How do you bait it tho? Starting your dash?

TheSingularity1 votes

Nope, just walk at her. She's either going to E me which will do nothing if I position properly, she will W engage/disengage or she'll back off. If she does 1 well then I don't need to gap close and she'll likely immediately W to run If she does 2 I wait it out then go If 3 then I can ward then wait for her to come to me.

The other alternative is a dash that can't be stopped (like vi or sion)

LeBlanc Rose1 votes

Or 4, the frontline tears you apart.

TheSingularity1 votes

If we're goin when she's grouped? Assuming she's doing her job (front lining) and you have a standard comp, pair the advance with ranged CC to scare poppy

Illabethe1 votes

You get close. Instead of using the dash, you tease her into attacking. She will pop the W to attempt to prevent escapes/ offensive dashes. You proceed to only dash after it ends, and avoid walls and her Q.

Orianna? Her ultimate can really do a lot if used well

Pika Fox2 votes

Would be very difficult, as anti divers tend to do so via CC, so damage is difficult to tack on.

Malz, poppy, janna, lulu tend to do well here, of which lulu and malz are the damage ones.

Velk and zyra can fill the role, depending on what is going on (they like people coming towards them but not instantly on them).

Mazikeen the Slave Mistress Same race as Eveilenn

Mid Range AP Ranged champions Resources: Cooldowns

Passive: Mazikeen's abilities are not affected by CDR but instead she gains Bonus Movement speed and AP. Mazikeens auto attacks Do "Lash" damage and gain a bit of her AP as bonus damage.

Q: "Playful Lashing" Mazikeen Lashes her Whip in a narrow line damaging all hit, Targets at the tip of the Lash take extra damage and are bound for a short time.

W: "Warning Crack" Mazikeen Spins and whips her whip around her blocking the next attack against her. If it is a melee attack the attacker is Bound.

"Temptress Kiss" if Mazikeen activates this while a target is bound, the bound target is knocked back and takes damage and is slowed.

E: "Slavers Lash" Mazikeen Spins her whip above her, gaining bonus Range and Damage on her next attack. If her next attack is Playful Lashing lower the CD on all of Mazikeens abilities.

"Mistress Command" If Mazikeen has a bound target she can Pull them to her while she leaps over them and resets the CD on Playful Lashing ad Warning Crack.

R: "Dance for the Mistress" Mazikeen Lashes out with her whip is a flurry of cracks Binding a target and lashing all others around her, spinning and knocking them back, She then leaps off of her bound target in any direction she chooses doing damage to the target and resetting her other abilities.

I've been a RekSai jungle one-trick since April of this year, roughly.

As most people know, she falls off noticeably around the mid game. She doesn't have the tankiness to start fights and have an effect, but also doesn't have the no-context burst (or multiple dashes) to effectively assassinate backline players without sacrificing herself.

With that said, she's a fucking nightmare for divers.

With an attack move while burrowed, your knockup (the unborrow) will auto-activate as soon as something enters AA range.. Which means that attack move hard counters ANY non-unstoppable gap closers used on her. Vi charge, JarvanIV pole combo, Quinn vault, XinZhao charge, Zac E. Shit, if Zed R's you, you can just attack move and knock him up as soon as he re-appears, before he can land ANY abilities.

So, the point? Well, park yourself under your most important back line member.

I've won quite a few games vs fed assassins; particularly Talon Khazix and Leblanc just by parking my ass under our most valuable squishy and spamming attack move. You will invariably CC the encroaching diver / assassin, with a 1 second knock up, before their mobility spell even applies its damage.

The only exception is Hecarim . His E has a GIGANTIC boost to his attack range, so even a manually activated W cannot cancel it from connecting if he clicks on you. But other than that, yeah. Rek'sai is an astonishingly hard counter to divers and assassins, and she's more than capable of putting out near assassin levels of burst onto the offending target herself.

Poppy, galio, any juggernaut, and karthus if you put 3 points in E 1st all do well too
