"Stop penalizing us for dodging in ARAM"

rework trundle··163 votes·5,602 views

Stop dodging arams, period. The point of ARAM (All Random All Mid) is, as the name suggest, to play a random champ. About a week ago, 7 champ selects in a row were dodged. It took me 20 mins to get into the game. Guess what? The game lasted 15 mins. Stop dodging! Trade with others, rerolls, but for god's sake, don't dodge. It's so frustrating.

Honestly. The whole point of ARAM is to figure out a strategy to make your champion to work. It's not "all mages all mid" It's not "dodge every time you get a poor champion all mid"

Just suck it up and make morde/panth/riven/etc work.

rework trundle15 votes

Riven isn't that bad, I go full cdr/tank (BC 1st so I don't miss too much damage) and become a support-ish cc bot. I played around 1.5k arams so I got a lot of "mini-strategies" like that.

SzGamer2272 votes

Off topic, but do you have a mini-strat for Darius? He's extremely susceptible to cc being immobile and out in the open, and go-to strat is just to take summoner 32 and hope for the best...

rework trundle4 votes

He's really weak in aram so there's not much to do, but being bad at Darius I just go full tank (no Cleaver) utility style.

Assuming the enemy team's damage is 50/50, I would build one item that provides armor, one that provides mr. SV/Adaptive for mr, RO/DMP/Thorn for armor.

After, I'd get Locket, then Gargoyle or Warmog's (GS if you teamfight a lot, WA if you skirmish more).

Knight's Vow is a pretty good item too if you have a mid/late game carry (Ziggs Lux Jayce Jinx Caitlyn for example)

Colossus, Mark/Flash, full tank, you should be fine. Just hope you have someone to peel because you won't win the game by yourself.

SH Azykan10 votes

summoner 32 + summoner 1:summoner 6 is definitely the way to go on darius and get extremely tanky. your kill pressure is based on initiating, not getting cc locked, and hoping that your team follows up and you can get your bleed stacks on as many champs as possible. ks a kill with your ult after a snowball if you have to, to get going. Darius has really good base hp regen so if you get items like visage, or others with hp regen on them, you can sustain pretty freely just standing there early on. the longer the lane gets and the tankier you get the scarier you become, as darius is extremely good at running people down with his team.

Your title sends a somewhat different message then the actual post......

Whatever, I hope it's clickbaity enough for people to check the preview :^)

Really? The quotation marks made it quite clear to me.

PaladinNO3 votes

Nah, not really.

I read

"Stop penalizing us for dodging in ARAM"

...as either sarcastic or irony, suggesting he wants harder punishments for ARAM dodgers. Which, as one with 6500+ ARAM games played, I agree with.

Reading the actual post, I got what I came here for, and was not surprised.

True, he doesn't specifically speak on the subject of which the title suggested, but merely took the gentleman approach, and described what the essence of ARAM is and how to make the ARAM queue more fun for everyone instead.

If it was up to me, I'd set harder penalties. Read the following more as a rant, and less as an actual opinion.

-1 dodge, fine. Shit happens. -A second dodge that month, no more ARAM that week. 1 month of dodge-free ARAM, and another free "dodge-token" is obtained.

Also, full refill of rolls for those who didn't dodge. Getting Sona with 0 rerolls is fine - having someone dodge and get stuck with Riven and 0 rolls promotes toxicity.

And I'd introduce a 3rd reroll, as we don't have only 100 champions anymore.

Serika Zero3 votes

I only agree if the free dodge is once per day or at least per week. Monthly is absurd.

Why I'm saying this? Therr are cases where you were rolled an absolute trash pick in your eyes. A hero that you either don't want to play or don't have fun playing. And you got no way to get rid of it.

Another thing that can happen is: stuff irl which you choose to prioritise over a simple game of lol (there's a lot of stuff more important). And it might come up during champ select.

And another thing that can happen are things beyond your control like a power break, a bug with rito's client, your wifi dying etc. Which will cause you to dodge.

And i am pretty sure you prefer someone dodging than having an int feeder or an afk player in your team ;)

PaladinNO6 votes

There are cases where you were rolled an absolute trash pick in your eyes. A hero that you either don't want to play or don't have fun playing. And you got no way to get rid of it.

Then you suck it up and play anyway. Curse yourself for unlocking that particular champion in the first place (I sure know I have), but you do the best that you can with what you got. Else you got no business in ARAM. Period.

stuff irl which you choose to prioritise over a simple game of lol (there's a lot of stuff more important). And it might come up during champ select.

Poor planning. Emergencies does happen, ofc., I have also left a game for "too long" because I had to, but never due to something merely unexpected. Any random guest can come it, sit down and shut up until the match is over. It's not just a game; it's a commitment made when queueing up with other people in the first place.

And another thing that can happen are things beyond your control like a power break, a bug with rito's client, your wifi dying etc. Which will cause you to dodge.

Blackouts doesn't concern me. I got a UPS on my PC and monitor, and another UPS on every piece of networking equipment. I got 5 minutes on battery by default, but can increase to ~17 minutes if necessary - any longer, and the power would be out for hours anyway, and in those cases I would already have received a notification prior to it as it 9 out of 10 times would be scheduled maintenance. Exceptions would be by bad weather, and I know better than to make online commitments if I KNOW the power may disappear at any time.

Got fully cabled network, so the WiFi is not in use. Router restarts may happen (though I'll blame the game for that - LoL is the only game I have ever encountered which kills internet connections), but my router does that automatically (as it's not some ISP-issued trash).

If my network card or harddrive or any other component decides to spontaneously combust, I will switch to my laptop and can be back ingame in ~5-7 minutes. Exceptions be if the oh-so new and glorious client decides to go wonky, I'll give you that. It's no less spaghetti coded than the old one.

Also, most of this are technical stuff than would happen when already ingame (except the client bugs). You don't just "dodge" because your WiFi dies. The server still has you listed as connected to a game (why else do you think you got the reconnect option?), and any temporary leaves is taken care of by the leaverbuster system anyway.

In all of my 6648 ARAM matches, I have dodged precisely 0 of them by own will.

All this said, as I pointed out in the post above, it was more of a rant than anything else. Yes, I'd like to see what only a monthly free leaver card would do, but a weekly one is likely more realistic. After all, we do want there to be people left to queue up with, right? ^^

Serika Zero6 votes

as i've mentioned before. You want everyone to be kind and respectful. While your desire, your demands and your requirements are by far admirable. They are also not in concord with reality of the human nature.

Few humans will just "suck it up", and do something they don't enjoy, especially in a game.

Poor planning. Emergencies does happen, ofc., I have also left a game for "too long" because I had to, but never due to something merely unexpected. Any random guest can come it, sit down and shut up until the match is over. It's not just a game; it's a commitment made when queueing up with other people in the first place.

Its not poor planing. Especially if you still live with your parents, which, a lot of us choose to still do. And I'm quite sure you got demands from your own (assuming you ever lived with your parents) to DO THIS THING I'M TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blackouts doesn't concern me. I got a UPS on my PC and monitor, and another UPS on every piece of networking equipment.

Not everyone is you, not everyone is as rich as you. If the power goes off in my house, everything goes off. The fridge, the heating, the microwave, the tv, the internet, the electricity (obviously), the lights, etc. The only thing that keeps working is the water. And its not just my house, its usually the entire neighbor. It its night outside with the moon behind clouds, its REALLY REALLY DARK.

I'm living in an 'medium class' or 'low medium class' family. Other people got it better, others got it worse. And your fully cabled network (which again, is not standard for a lot of households) can also fail if something happened to the cable around your area. Like, lets say your IPS is modernizing the infrastructure. They might have to take the internet out of a lot of you for a while. This will happen even if they aren't working right in front of your house. Wi-fi has become more and more of a standards for households as more and more devices use the internet such as: smart tvs, ps4, xbox, smartphones, laptops, pcs, other consoles, etc. Its by far more convenient to have wi-fi internet than cables going all though your house. And this is why, wi-fi connection is to be expected on the majority of lol players.

You also personally got 2 or more devices which can play lol (pcs or laptops), I got 3 for example. But only 1 of them has windows, the other two have linux for obvious reasons.

And yes, you 'dodge' when your wi-fi dies. Wi-fi can die due to multiple reasons such as: the ips stopped giving you internet, the router that gives you wi-fi failed, your machine is infested with viruses and can no longer keep the connection open, radiation (wi-fi singals happen in waves, stuff like microwaves if there's enough of them in the area and cause destabilization, even airplanes).

In all of my 6648 ARAM matches, I have dodged precisely 0 of them by own will.

Which is again, great, amazing, congratulations. You are a great player which cares about his team. HOWEVER, please do not expect everyone to share your mentality and behavior.

Like I said at the start. The idea is admirable, but it goes against human nature. And you'll never be able to win against human nature. As in: not everyone is a good and nice person. There's assholes, there's trash out there and so on.

I'm personally in that category, just for you to get an idea. I would dodge a game if mom or dad need me right that moment, even if they usually know to wait, sometimes they do something that needs help asap. I would dodge a game if I have to play poppy as an example, sometimes even if i have rerolls available. During december, my internet is quite unstable (not just mine, everyone's in the area), so, i might dodge involuntarily as well. If i get a call from a friend that needs my assistance, I'm also dodging (or afk-ing in game if it already started) And so on.

My whole life doesn't resolve around League of Legends. I'm not making every preparation possible to avoid harming my team mates. The problem is, a lot of players are like this. Hence, one per day free dodge would be great as in: Well, you tried to play the game but for whatever reason you couldn't. How about you tend to real life problems today and you might give it a shot tomorrow, what do you think mate? :) Compared to: Well, you tried to play the game and for whatever reason you couldn't. How about you stay the fuck away for 1 month or I'll ban your ass off my previous game, how dare you do that to 4 innocent people, who will give them back that minute?? now go away till I don't decide to ban you for your first dodge!!!

Yes, I've exaggerated. But that's how strict the proposal is. If you fuck up twice in one month while playing a game that's supposed to be for fun, you'll get punished. This is how you alienate people.

Even some of your kind, that doesn't dodge will slowly start to fade away seeing their friends getting hurt for random shit.

PS: there's always more assholes than good people in the world

PaladinNO6 votes

Aye, I hear you, mate. Kudos for Linux btw. No server freak myself, but instead keep everything on/in one computer. Fun fact: I also still live at home. Technically, at least. Renting a 28m² room in the basement. Cheaper than anywhere else (though still no less than it should be), and it's within driving distance of work.

Reasonably arguments for the most part. Though what I got a beef with (though I may have misunderstood you, I'm not quite sure) is when you say "most people aren't like this [putting a video game before real life]", and yet you say (again, if I understood you correctly) that you will dodge if you get Poppy.

I wouldn't. I would swallow the taste of disliking Poppy, and try to make the most of it. Who knows? Maybe I'll even get to like playing her. It's a longshot, I know, but no need to deliberately make things miserable by thinking negative thoughts.

Also:

I would dodge a game if mom or dad need me right that moment

I wouldn't. If it was important, I'd go, yes, but let the countdown go and then tell them in no uncertain terms that I got 1-2 minutes. I will not dodge over it.

I have just made a prior commitment with other humans, and, to me, parents doesn't get the right to claim more importance than other people with which I have made a promise (by staying there with them for however long the match may last).

Not everyone is you, not everyone is as rich as you. If the power goes off in my house, everything goes off.

I wouldn't claim the term "rich". Some would certainly call me such, yes, depending on their own living standard, but in my country, we're, as far as I know, below the average. It's just what I decide to spend my money on. Priorities. I don't drink, I don't smoke, goes to a restaurant once a year, maybe, and don't care for traveling.

Instead, I spend my money on technical stuff; computer hardware, flashlights purchases (some addiction to have, huh), and other utilities. So when the neighbourhood goes dark (where, in winter, the outside is really dark), our computers still work, internet is still up, automated backup lights in the roofs on both floors kick in (makes for going outside a real laugh: All is pitch black around me - except our house ^^). I even have had some come knocking on the door, wondering how the hell we still have power. Priceless! xD

I think we'll round this off now, else we'll stray too far off-topic. I think I've made my points - you at least seem to have understood and accepted them with grace - and I've read yours. And while I can't say I agree with it all, I can understand and appreciate your logic. As you say: Human nature (it's a bitch, ain't it?). Except here's a fun fact to maybe help you understand how I think: I know it's human nature, and that's why I think as I do - I want to beat it! I don't like being controlled, not even by my very instincts.

It's impossible for anyone to change unless they are made self-aware of how they think. And even then, they must want to change. And that goes right down to dodging. Someone don't want to not dodge, they'll keep on doing it - unless they're taught not to.

I see I easily could add more here, but I feel that wouldn't contribute to anything, nor make a shred of difference to others, so I'll leave it out.

So as a final word, would it surprise you if I say that I had 1200+ Teamworks honours (RIP)? And that I am a Support main (at heart, I am such in most things - wanting to help)? Rhetorical question, so no need to answer that. ;) I may not have particular skills at the game (high Gold at best), nor do I care for gaining more skill, BUT...I like to be friendly, and engage in conversation as much as teamfights on the Howling Abyss.

As far as I'm concerned, having a good time is much more important than winning. Though ofc. not at the expense of others - and not just because rules (boring), but because that's how I feel it should be.

what are they teaching them?

"good morning" "bye (insert affectionate word)" five pm comes around "hey there" groans from the economy "good night"

parents on average only get 4 and a half hours with their kids a day and that's if they adhere to the standard work schedule. There are people who work 16 hours a day just to pay the bills

if you want another example, $20k is the average annual income in Tennessee

in other states, to be out of poverty, you need to have an income of more than double that

specter4247 votes

There should be a way less punishing dodge penalty at the very least. I don't like rerolling shitdyr, getting garen, rerolling garen and getting shitdyr yet again. On top of that my teammates stick with whatever god awful melee they have and we sit under tower getting poked all day and the game is lost in 10 minutes.

Mark does not compensate for bad team comps. I've seen plenty of aram games with ranged vs melee and the ranged always wins because they can actually push towers.

MysterQ1 votes

Roll Trynd. Dodge Roll Udyr. Dodge. Roll Udyr... reroll Trynd. Enter game with Trynd and Mundo on team.

I tried the Trynd, I just suck at trying to do anything in ARAM with him.

TurquoiseYoshi7 votes

Play Trynd with 45% CDR rush (Cleaver, Visage, Warmog's is solid, or other Kindlegem items can be subbed in) and W max. The AD reduction and slow is really good and you can get it onto about an 8 second CD. It doesn't matter if you're useless, try to make the enemy team useless. Shred their armor with Cleaver. Heal up out of combat with Visage/Warmog's. Spam W off cooldown. It doesn't matter if you get poked in really hard, you'll be annoying.

Sir Fuzzi12 votes

No, you get what you get for dodging. If you don't like the punishment, don't-- wait for it--

Don't bloody dodge.

The rest of us shoulder our picks like adults, why the hell shouldn't you?

EDIT: I would happily play Garen and Udyr. In fact, I would consider both an opportunity.

And people seem to complain far less when they're the ones poking a melee team under tower.

SzGamer22715 votes

You can't play an all random mode and be upset when RNG shafts you. You aren't allowed to waste people's time because of an unfavorable random outcome in a more that is centered around random picks.

If you just want to play All Mid, that's what Legend of the Poro King is for.

There are a single few champions i absolutely refuse to play. I dodge those games, even if i end up getting locked out for an entire hour from all queues. Other than that, i don't have a particular ARAM champion pool nor do i care. I play what i get as most of my champ pool is made up of champions i wanted to play at some point.

I only refuse to play Teemo. Among all my aram games, I probably never even dodged any game because of that. I would only dodge if :

  • he's free and I get him instead of the ~100 other champions I own
  • I have no rr left
  • Nobody wants to trade

These odds are really low.

My favorite are the ones who draw Soraka, have no re-rolls, then flame the shit out of you because you don't want to trade Vayne/Caitlyn/Jinx/Trist for Soraka and then dodge.

It sucks you got a shitty support in essentially the 'team deathmatch' mode, but that is kinda what you sign up for in an all random game mode.
