What if Ranged and Melee items were separate?

So, I was looking at a thing about the item 3147 and people saying it should be melee only. I have trouble with some of these items because there are some that are melee only some that are ranged only... they don't say which is which and it doesn't make sense.

Someone with a sword can't shoot bolts but someone with a bow can somehow use a sword at range. I get it: items need to be balanced to fit multiple groups. Why can't we do a Ranged/Melee classification and each champ can only see the items that they can use. Want to do something like item 3031 on Tristana (like I normally do) then copy it to the Infinity Bow or Infinity SwordBow or something. This way there's still the item 3031 but also has a version for ranged. The items wouldn't even really need to be changed unless there is a balancing problem, any item that doesn't need to be balanced only need to be duplicated.

Also, I am hoping the update to the client includes something on the Item Sets tab that we can filter items better. (lacking any filter option for Armor Pen or Magic Pen, as well as limiting maps or items able to be used to champs (or not - any item set can have Viktor's items added, even if they can't be seen or used).

Edit: By this I'm saying there should be 2 classifications as champs: Melee or Ranged (mages would fall into ranged or unable to use melee/ranged items). Then have 3 classifications of items: Neutral, Melee, and Ranged. Melee champs have access to neutral + melee items and ranged champs have access to neutral + ranged items. Could even be done with an extra category of items for Mages.

Majority of items would still fit as neutral, but we could keep things like item 3147 as a melee only item, while ranged champs have ranged items that actually fit them better.

If Riot wants the champs to be more unique, why can't we have their item selection be even remotely unique?

i couldn't care less about if it's a sword or a bow.

It's about balance and that's why item 3142 item 3147 anditem 3025 should be meele-only.

The point isn't whether it's a sword or a bow, but rather that it would be a way to differentiate between an item for ranged champs and an item for melee champs.

All Items shouldn't be meele OR ranged.

Some Items are fine working on both and that's why we don't need new textures so that bows are ranged and swords meele only.

item 3031 for example can also be build on MasterYi and Yasuo for example.

umm there should be SOME specific items for ranged and melee like item 3077 and maybe a range only item.

but withNidalee as my main and with other champs such asJayce Elise (and I'm sure i am missing more)

i dont really think you can split the ENTIRE pool of items. nor do i even like the idea

I'm not saying split the entire pool.

If there's an item that fits both ranged and melee then there should be two copies of it - one melee only and one ranged only, and each one has it's own category. A ranged champ has access to all neutral + ranged items while a melee champ has access to all neutral + melee items.

yeah but there arn't really THAT many items that are an issue on ranged like shadow said.. item 3147 item 3142 item 3025 and i would also add item 3155 and item 3156 to the list.

but those are the only items i would consider adding to the "melee only" list

There is no reason Hexdrinker should be melee only. It is a good defensive item for ADCs against burst assasins. I think to LeBlanc specifically. If there isn't Hexdrinker, there's no way to stop LB from one shotting you. With it, there's still a chance of it (say it's on cooldown or she gets enough magic pen) but it provides counter play. Honestly I don't know why yall are so butthurt about any of those items but I definitely think Hexdrinker is good as an item for both rsnged and melee.

What kind of sense does that make? if there's two copies of an item, then what is literally the point of splitting them if both categories still have access to said item?

Consistency. All weapons that make sense as melee are melee weapons, all weapons that make sense as range are ranged. Items right now really make no sense - they are just shit that you buy because it feels good. Except for item 3085 that is ranged only. But it doesn't say that on there, you just can't buy it on a melee champ. And then there is item 3074 that has 2 abilities that only work on melee champs - but it also doesn't say that.

I think it'd be great for all players to be able to easily understand the weapons that they should be using. How many times have you seen new players with completely wrong items? Yea they will learn but they shouldn't be so confused that they are buying AP items on an AD champ. There should be some consistency in the items somewhere and this would do that.

It also allows tweaks based on whether an item is better for ranged or for melee. If an item starts becoming overpowered by the ranged ADC users, but works perfect on melee champs then they can tweak only that side of it easily. There's already things like this in place where a single item has several effect times based on how damage is dealt by it. Some items could easily be changed from weapons to charms to make them neutral as well (something wearable rather than a weapon).

This could allow a lot more variety in the items and could easily keep champs in line with how they are designed. People breaking champs by using builds they aren't designed for is a big part of where the nerfs come from: the champs scale in unexpected and unintended ways. It's easily arguable we don't need a shit ton of new items but splitting categories of items up more and duplicating some if needed to keep up on logical build path themes. (not needed but would be cool)
