Suggestion: add some variety to ability levels

Someone feel free to correct me, but it seems like we have pretty much all champs (maybe 1-3 exceptions) with abilities that max out at 5-5-5-3 for a total of 18.

Wouldn't it make more sense for some champs to allow for any number of abilities that total 18? Set requirements of no ult before level 6 and no closer than every 3 levels (developer rules) so you could do a skill with 6-3-3-4, where you can only level up R at level 6, 9, 12 and 15 but any other abilities can be leveled at any time. Why do this? Simple, some champs have utility abilities that really don't need to be leveled up (and doing so is nearly no benefit). This way we can make a utility ability only 1-3 levels (just enough to activate it) and then the primary abilities could get up to 6-8 levels and have a larger scale range.

Can't think of examples, but I'd love to hear some from people about why this would or would not work. It's a pretty simple suggestion that could open up a lot of options for champions. Yea it can be hard to remember who has how many... not really, there are dots under each ability, it blocks out ones you can't level up and each champ has a different order the abilities should be leveled up in. There's already a lot to remember, this really won't change much other than relearning the order.

also we could have different mechanics added at different skill levels

for example normal q is a nuke but at rank 3 it gains a slow

can make for more interesting skill levelup decisions

mostly its just max the one that gains most power, but if certain abilities had powerspikes at certain ranks then this could make it more interesting in do i max my q or my e or do max all skills equally to get to all the powerpsikes sooner etc etc

That would be cool but would step on Syndra's toes. It also would make it hard to tell what X ability will do to you.

I just don't see why this is necessary.

It isn't necessary, but it's a game. Games are things people do for fun and they sometimes enjoy other non-necessary things being added in to add a little variety to the game.

The champs with a current, non standard skill progression. Elise Jayce Karma Nidalee Ryze Udyr

Of this list, I included Elise, Nid, and Karma only because they get their ult at level one. Yet Jayce, diverges a little, as his basic abilities can level up 6 times, and his ult levels up automatically.

However, messing with the number of levels an ability needs, Would likely skew with a champion's power curve, and make it more difficult to balance. If your core ability had 7 ranks, while a utility ability only had 3. Chances are, you would have a more powerful curve in the mid game.

Likely that would muddle a champion's kit. and it may cause some clarity issues as champion abilities suddenly have new effects. I also don't think it would be as interesting as you think, simply due to balance. Because Riot is basically forced to balance around the most OP option, That option is going to become the only way to go.

However, augmenting basic abilities is nothing new. Gangplank Khazix Viktor all have the ability to augment their skills via aspects of their kit.
