Could the problem with turrets be that they deal ONLY physical damage?

If you look at the boards you will see countless complaints about how weak turrets are right now.

Maybe the problem is that champions who stack armor can tank towers all day with nothing to worry about.

What if instead of dealing only physical damage they also dealt magic damage?

You obviously can't just add magic damage on top of the physical damage, so the physical damage would need to be reduced some and I would leave the exact balance ratios up to Riot to figure out through testing.

I also think it might be wise for all towers to deal a much smaller amount of their damage as true damage, making them always relevant, even against monster tanks. Possibly even make this figure scale on some really small percentage of the target's % total health.

I wouldn't say so. An issue is always discrepancies formed from expectations and experiences versus the game. Turret dives have basically always happened, even low level dives.

Something that has changes in regards to turret dives is the amount of damage available, from one source or another. If you increase the amount of damage, that changes the amount of turret dives that are successful versus the amount that are thwarted, which in turn changes what is and is not a defensible position for a player.

They have 30% armor penetration which was added a long time ago to mitigate this issue.

I think the real problem is that some items have a side effect of being better against turrets even though it's not their main purpose. This problem exists even if you only compare armor items. For example, Frozen Heart has the highest armor so that makes it good against turrets compared to other armor items. This is not the main purpose of the item, but it is a side effect of the fact that the passives on other armor items don't work against turrets.

I think turrets should deal a special damage type that you can only mitigate with special passives or a special stat. Then items can have a separate defense stat that is specific to turrets and it would allow more fine tuning of items. Like you could give that stat to all tank items, and maybe make a specialized diver item that conditionally gives this stat in some way.

Turrets seem to be weaker because of armor-less champions diving them without being punished and not so much with tanks soaking up turret shots while beating you to death.

I suppose you could slightly decrease damage of champions struck by turret shots...

No, the problem is how big there is a delay between each attack, compared to the amount of damage in the game

I've always thought turrets need to deal true damage personally. It doesn't have to be AS MUCH damage as it is now, but at least true damage can't be mitigated and the only way to counter it is through HP. You should never be able to stand under a turret for nearly 30 shots, even as a tank. 10 is even going a little too far.

I'd love to see a post analyzing this on GP+

Cause I think this is an interesting idea.

I completely agree. Lets turn a game into who stands under their turret longer & outscales wins.
