I kiiiiiinda feel VGU's get picked based on popularity and the mass appeal nowadays

Don't get me wrong, I'll be the last person to admit that Swain, irelia, Akali, Nunu and Co. wouldn't need VGU's but the latest few picks for these complete overhauls kinda feel like they were made based on how appealing they'd be to the player base.

Most of these recent champions had some factors to them that would definitely make them have larger player bases and in effect, sell more. Swain is one of them that had most of his repulsiveness that some old Swain players, myself included, just stripped away to make him a total badass who looks cool and just has a lot of power fantasies attached to him.

Irelia was also one of those. She's flashy, she's a really attractive woman and already has a theme that'll make a lot of players pick her up.

Now look at the next two champions to get a VGU.

Akali's theme can be boiled down to "Sexy Ninja Chick" that already promises flashy plays, a lot of fan service and other stuff that appeals to a very broad audience. Compared to there champions on the VGU list she performs pretty well and isn't really in a balance limbo, albeit being extremely annoying to fight. Though if Irelia's any indication Akali might be even more of a chore to go up against.

Next is Nunu, which is going to be a cutesy, light-hearted character that'll certainly find his way into the hearts of a lot of Lol players. He'll deliver on the childhood friends, the dynamic duo, the fun-loving pair of mischief makers and he'll definitely have a high play rate.

Now look on the other VGU champions. Most of them "deserve" a VGU a lot more due to extremely outdated looks, balancing issues and overall just having aged really poorly. Nocturne Fiddlesticks DrMundo compared to Nunu, Akali and Irelia though, have very NICHE appeal that won't make them be played nearly as much as these other champions.

I'm not blaming Riot here, seeing that they're already doing more and more VGU's per year, but it feels like compared to other seasons, Riot finally chose to pick VGU's based on A) Appeal/Popularity and B) just more resonant Identities.

Maybe it's just me, but it feels kinda off to me. Just my two cents though.

maybe you should make some more threads about mordekaiser

Yes, exactly! Yesterday reddit's top thread of the day was 6k post about DrMundo and how much obsolete he is, yet not a single comment from Riot. As soon as Riot released Gnar , Ornn and Galio 20+ melee fighters got dumpstered just by having vastly inferior design.

At least for Dr. Mundo there is still the "taking a break from Zaun" explanation, since they already reworked Warwick and Urgot...

But I agree, it feels like appeal is a major deciding point for the slots right now. It's kinda understandable, but they really should mix in a niche appeal champion in from time to time now.

"Taking a break from Zaun" but we get TWO Ionian champions reworked in the same year?

Tbh, it just feels like Riot is a bit biased when it comes to Ionia. There are oftenly years between champ releases from the same region (for example: the last Piltover champ before Camille was Vi in 2012).

Meanwhile we got 3 champions from Ionia last year.... in a row. Xayah Rakan Kayn

And not just two Ionian champions reworked in the same year, but 2 Ionian champion reworks back to back again (Irelia and next VGU after her is Akali).

It is what it is.... I personally really want Dr. Mundo to get his rework asap, but it seems I get disappointed for a while there.

Eh does Kayn count? He's Noxian.

Kayn was born in Noxus, but he is officially an Ionian champion. All his business is in Ionia, as part of Zeds shadow clan.

It's the same like Urgot, who was born in Noxus and lived there a long time, but he is a Zaunite now and counts as a Zaun champion as well. It doesn't really matter where the champion was born, but where their narrative takes place.

Honestly Mundo needed the rework more than Warwick or Urgot, but he got a slight change on his E and they called it a day. Playstyle wise urgot was on a decent spot, the reason he was unpopular was due to preconceived stereotypes (everyone gave as a fact that he was bad) but in reality after his second rework he was on a healthy spot.

I personally think Urgot was in dire need of that rework as well. But Dr. Mundo should be in the top priority list now definitely. He looks more like a cartoon character than a champ in the league of legends.

Or any of the VGUs picked were totally reasonable candidates and this thread was not very good?
