I'm honestly amazed that there are still "Buff Mordekaiser" threads

Malicious Metal··116 votes·10,074 views

Every now and then I see a thread advocating Mordekaiser buffs or people calling him garbage whenever someone asks for advice for playing Morde.

And I can't help but sit here, chuckle to myself and shake my head.

So, let me make something crystal clear.

#Mordekaiser doesn't need, nor deserve any kind of Buffs right now.

Want to know why?

First of all; He's been sitting on a 52% win rate for the longest time now, with mains having win rates upwards of 60-70%, higher than your average Juggernaut main. His win rate as a bot laner in particular already has a 66% win rate on its own.

We got a significant bug fix recently, eliminating the most annoying one of his bugs, meaning that the remaining ones are just trivial stuff that might as well just be kept until they trash all his coding when he gets his VGU.

But most importantly of all: #Mordekaiser is a huge Bitch to fight and makes the game HELL for whoever has the misfortune to go up against him. To Quote the Akali I fought a few days ago: "I'd rather contract Aids than ever lane against Mordekaiser again."

Mordekaiser is almost old poppy levels of oppressive design, yet Riot has been so kind to let us Mordekaiser players enjoy this cancerous champion. I know this sounds really weird but I thoroughly enjoy watching the enemy suffer whenever they TRY to fight me and just can't. Yet this is in no way healthy right now as Mordekaiser has basically no counter play besides simply out ranging him or having the Jungler camp his ass.

So please. Stop bloody asking for Mordekaiser buffs. The ol' Tin can is in a good spot until Riot tackles the fundamental flaws of his kit. http://apollo-na-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/1441132488/me.png

I do feel a bit bad that Swain made it before 'ole Morde for the VGU. It's kind of criminal.

I mean, it's good for me, don't get me wrong. But it just feels like it's not fair when champs like Morde (or even worse, Nunu) are waiting.

Malicious Metal9 votes

Well, I'd rather wait for Riot to have a direction for him that's Heavy and Metal enough for his VGU to be just as much of a success as Pentakill's Mortal Reminder Music video.

ModKnightsKemplar9 votes

Yes, definitely.

It's no one's fault. It's whoever they have a good direction for, as others have stated. I just feel like if the world was fair, it would be Morde and not Swain :)

Karfuss7 votes

Have to agree with that. Swain, at least to me, feels healthy enough already. He's not bad, he's not great and his kit is relatively fine. Just dated.

And then you get champions like Swain and Evelynn (not complaining like) getting VGUs over the likes of Morde, Malphite and Rammus (I'd even include Malzahar in there), who are significantly more oppressive. Morde, at least, being a hidden OP pocket pick who unlike Poppy and Galio has yet to be thrown into mainstream.

reav3 has stated numerous times they only go through a VGU if they find a solid idea to go ahead with. Someone like Urgot, which has been on the VGU list since S3, has been very high priority, but we only got him now 3-4 years later because they finally got an idea for him.

As roster updates have shown, doing a rework for the sake of it has not netted great results in the past.

A recurring, and saddening trend on the Boards is that a lot of players tend to evaluate champions purely on the basis of their balance, and pay no mind to their design and what limitations that might impose. When a champion feels unfair, many players simply jump to the conclusion that they need a permanent nerf, without realizing that the better long-term solution would be to update their design, and the reverse applies too.

Champions like Azir, Kassadin, Mordekaiser, etc. all generally have their performance kept under tight control because, if allowed to be too strong, they feel awful to deal with, and it feels like the same thing is happening to Caitlyn more recently. Even if those asking for Morde buffs may be coming from a good place, enacting that would be catastrophic as long as he retains his current gameplay, so that kind of suggestion is, in the end, not all that helpful, and certainly not to dedicated Morde players.

Malicious Metal10 votes

I think this problem is acerbated by Mordekaiser having a really low pick rate. Nobody sees him in game and frequently has to play against him.

Caitlyn, Azir and Kassadin are common sights and people usually have very strong feelings about them when playing against these champions. I assure you, if Mordekaiser was a common pick this board would be flooded with "Nerf Mordekaiser" threads.

Not played =/= weak by any means Just take a look at someone like Skarner.

Sraeg20133 votes

Azir a common pick? Where?

Malicious Metal2 votes

He's got a higher pick rate and he's a more recent champion.

Sraeg20135 votes

Higher =/= high.

Pickrate of <2.3% is the opposite of "common".

Azir WAS a common sight, but pretty much nobody plays him anymore.

Mostly because why bother?

He had to be brought in line to other champs so he wouldn't box basically everyone out when it came to the mid-lane role. Now he can be scary, but multitudes of things can go wrong on him just in the course of a game and there's so much micro-managing to a very meager increase in pay-off if you play him optimally.

Basically, if I could get the same results out of an Orianna or Annie for a fraction of the effort, the question would be why put in far more effort than I'd ever care to want or need?

Ahristocats2 votes

2.5% pick rate, morde has 1.2% or something like that

Sraeg20135 votes

Global: Azir-------1,9% Morde--1,8%

Plat+: Azir--------2,3% Morde--1,8%

This was interestingly also the case with pre-rework Poppy, then she got one niche counterpick in LCS

PhearBunny10 votes

I think Mordekaisers main issue is that, I can counterpick him so easily and he will never ever ever be useful if I do so.

I don't mind him as a last pick tho, assuming he isn't counterpicking himself.

Malicious Metal23 votes

Out of curiosity. Who do you think is a counter to Mordekaiser?

PhearBunny11 votes

Top lane, Lissandra, Renekton, Riven(good riven), Wukong. Jungle, Jax, Leona, Wukong, Maokai, Anything with a gap close and CC really.

He doesn't really lose lanes just on his own, its jungler+top lane combos that just send him into a feeding spiral that his kit cant do anything about. Hes so much more susceptible to ganks than anything else. When I see a Morde I almost always force him to go 0-5 in lane phase, because theres nothing he can do about getting ganked if u pick a jungler that can combo with the top laner well.

I haven't seen him bot lane in like a year so I cant really comment on that.

Malicious Metal23 votes

See, all the ones you listed, besides Maybe Wukong with ignite are what I consider Easy matchups for Mordekaiser. Riven especially is my favorite matchup as I just trash them due to her kit forcing her to fight me on my own terms.

CC in iteself is the counter to a lot of champions but Morde doesn't struggle more so than other Juggernauts. He can take a beating. What really counters him is strong sustained DPS like Jax but that's about it. Currently there's not a lot of counters being played so I'm really happy.

PhearBunny7 votes

He cant even touch Lissandra! its literally impossible! And hes a guaranteed kill anytime jungler shows up with Liss's ult ready to go. lol

Malicious Metal19 votes

I can out sustain her mana bar and with Stomraider's and Rylais I can actually manage to stick to her. I laugh at her wimpy attempts at poking me.

Lissandra is far from being a tough matchup.

kargish1 votes

To be fair I actually consider this guy Garen to be a good counterpick to Mordekaiser. Even though he's trash tier, his silence prevents Morde from doing anything relevant, and he can outtrade Morde by absorbing all of his burst with his W. Not to mention Garen can easily catch up to Morde pre-item 3116

Malicious Metal2 votes

Garen is easy. He's too telegraphed to ever do anything and if I see him charging me with Q I can still use W and Q in preparation.

kargish1 votes

That I'd like to see

Morde winning against Garen in lane? Not gonna happen.

Malicious Metal4 votes

It's gonna happen. Because Mordekaiser beats Garen really easily.

Backup4now11 votes

[Keep in mind, i'm also against buffing Mordekaiser as a Mordekaiser main, i just want bug fixes]

Riven forces herself to fight on your terms Mordekaiser can take a beating Not a lot of counters

Are we even talking about the same character? Riven can bait your Q and W, jump out of range with a single q, wait for them to time out, and then jump back in to chunk you. A good Riven DOES beat Morde, just like any other hyper-mobile dps burst character can.

Mordekaiser is literally amongst the squishiest characters in the game. Unless you can perfectly stack your shield against their whole minion wave (good player won't let you), you are quite literally the squishiest character in the game, having extremely subpar early health, armor, and health regen, while also being an immobile melee with minimum movement speed (which dramatically increases how often you're subject to getting outmaneuvered and poked).

Darius sticks to morde and does not die in one combo, he chases you until you die. Riven outmaneuvers you. Hell, even Yasuo can outplay Mordekaiser, by baiting q and hit-and-running, even though he's still an easy matchup. A good renekton will not counter, but will easily stay even with and even out trade mordekaiser on occasion. Lissandra will never die to morde, and will zone him, because lissandra actually does enough sustained poke to beat his shield (that much is already a counter) and will lock him down for an easy gank kill. Any ranged character forces Morde to just shove and be prone to ganks, most meta tanks can survive his combo and just extend the trade during his insane early cooldowns.

Mordekaiser dies in one CC, even early game (assuming it's more than .5 seconds), so this notion that he doesn't struggle against it is absurd. A single Morgana binding completely removes him from the fight late game, and building to counter that means you won't do your JOB of DEALING DAMAGE, because even his DAMAGE isn't much to brag about (full ap = 3.5k-4.5k~damage rotation late game over 3 auto attacks, while many mage characters like Brand and Ahri can do comparable amounts of destruction in an AoE or with mobility or cc to back it up) and building defense means you can't kill a squishy in one combo means you get soloed by them probably before you even reach their face because inhales

Anyways, yeah, I feel like you're playing a different game. If you thought DnD was like playing rocket tag, League fights end even faster; god forbid you get ganked.

What Is Smite4 votes

Darius and Riven are both easy match-ups for Morde, Darius pulls you in to start the fight? Ok punish him by dropping all 3 Q's on him, most of them expect you to run after being pulled so they immediately que up their Q, Riven is just poke her down with E and force her to use her abilities to just CS, she trys to all-in you? Drop W on a minion and let her blow both forms of CC like they all do then just heal it back up. Yasuo is a simple match as well the moment he dashes in towards you without his 3rd Q he takes a chunk from 2 Q's considering the time it takes for his dash to come up again. A majority of Morde players get their leads early and shove it down the enemy teams throats, you CAN NOT deal with him 1v1 or 2v1 and depending on how fed the Morde is 3v1's are out of the question.

Backup4now9 votes

Responding to you and anyone else who justifies the matchups: relying on enemy stupidity stops working higher up. Explaining how you just wait for them to walk into you mindlessly and beat their asses is not useful information. Against a good player who knows what Mordekaiser does, you will never get more than a single q and tick of w off before your opponent leaves, or tanks all your damage and keeps smacking you while your 10 second cooldowns are up (to death). You are not guaranteed to be fed, and you will most likely feed when you wait for people to crash upon you instead of taking initiative yourself.

How do you fair against yorick? Just a farm fest? who out scales who?

Barcid7 votes

How do you fair against yorick? Just a farm fest? who out scales who?

Yorick's shield food...

E/W on his ghosts. Generally they die very, very quickly, and Yorick's little bomb toss is pretty bleh as far as heavy damage goes.

For as much of a bully as Yorick is, Morde's something that you'd call "melee cancer".

Ahristocats3 votes

Lissandra is not a counterpick to Morde Lissandra is a "i will not die against morde" pick, but she doesn't counter morde

Morde wil just push the lane and shield himself and heal while poking her with E and DFT (if he takes it) Morde will not die

everyone else including riven and renekton is a match up in favor of Morde, Picking Renekton into Morde is suicide

The only Melee that counters Morde is jax

BoilTheOil3 votes

renekton fucks morde idk what your saying

he goes in stuns you with fury Qs you then he dashes out you can't do anything against that besides E him for a little bit of damage

Ahristocats6 votes

whoever stands in front of mordekaiser is doomed to lose

he can go and stun you it doesn't matter, the moment he dashes your W is already on with one proc of Q because you cannot stop morde Q animation, half of his damage will go through shield as you build shield on minions

he dashes out? you follow him with stormraider, destroys the shit out of him and steal hp with W then, morde goes on monsters in the jungle and heal on them with W

people are literally apes while playing morde, he cannot lose against melee champions unless it's jax

i don't even know why you talk about morde vs renek when you don't main morde

BoilTheOil3 votes

Renekton stun last 1.5 seconds if you have fury which is enough time for him to q and get out sure mordekaiser can maybe get one Q and E onto him will it proc stormraiders? No it won't unless its glass cannon renekton

AFK Push5 votes

Saying that Renekton fucks Mordekaiser is like saying he fucks champs like TahmKench Illaoi. They love it when you're up in their face, and they aren't squishy. You have to play very smart to win matchups like this.

Quinn Kayle Teemo Gnar Swain Kennen I play a lot of Morde and these are generally the ones that give me the most trouble, personally. (And when i say give me trouble I mean send me packing back to base and deny me farm, they don't generally kill me. The only one that kills me usually is swain.)

I generally kill Gnar's a lot, but it's more so them playing bad than me playing well since gnar can be somewhat hard to play.

Teemo CAN be hard if he plays it right, if he let's me get a kill on him though it's all over and I snowball on him. You outscale the crap out of him, just the early game blows balls.

Swain is aids, not much else I can say about that one... I generally just rush a item 3065 and shove him to his turret all game then do krugs to just avoid dealing with him.

For some reason I have trouble with Yorick even though he's kinda bad tbh. I went into the matchup thinking I'll just heal off his ghouls and was doing fine and crushing the lane for a bit, then I saw the errors of my metal ways as he physically abused me after some levels. Maybe I just played it wrong because I don't know the matchup though.

Buff Naw Bug fixes. Yes please

Malicious Metal3 votes

Which Bug would they need to fix anyways? Most of them aren't even worth the effort imho

FlyingRoboticCow3 votes

How can you honestly balance a champion if hes filled with bugs? If you don't care that the champion is filled with bugs how can you honestly have any opinion on if that champion is balanced. I understand that hes oppressive and can be insanely hard to lane against but the same can be said for a multitude of champions at different points in the game.

Malicious Metal10 votes

I MAIN this champion.

These bugs are insignificant.

Most of them are visual bugs and weird W targeting interactions that do not impact negatively in the slightest. He's on the VGU list and he's in a good spot, that's more than old Poppy players could've hoped for.

DarkRitual2 votes

Ahh, memories of wrecking people with old Poppy support because they had no idea what her kit did.

Karfuss4 votes

God I loved Old Poppy. Ult the support and proceed to wreak havoc. All the while, the enemy team had no idea what just happened.

Same with Old Galio and his ult, absolutely monstrous support. Build full tank and still did capable damage, and a good flash ult won fights. Only Udyr, in bear form at the right time, could stop fights becoming a one sided death ball.

KnightOfEloHell2 votes

The only bugs that get to me is when I lose a fight because 3rd Q did no damage because I bonked them the same time w popped.

Also, I can hardly control ghosts anymore, I send like 5 commands with alt and R and they don't do anything but stand still unless I walk over to my target and AA them.

Wind2344 votes

I see a lot of match-up questions in the comments, so now my curiosity is piqued. I can't remember the last time I've faced a Morde in lane, if ever, but since you're a super experienced main, I'll ask; what do you consider to be harder match-ups for Mordekaiser?

Malicious Metal15 votes

Jax This fucker is the bane of Mordekaiser He's by far Morde's hardest matchup.

Apart from that I can win or go even in all other lanes but the toughest, or rather where I have to just be smarter than them are: Kled Gnar Cassiopeia Swain

Bonus RNG points go to Tryndamere

Also Caitlyn is a good one for bot lane cancer.

How does one actually play Morde? Because I have not had success on the champ. Yet he seems my style.

Malicious Metal7 votes

Mordekaiser is one of the easiest champions mechanically speaking but succeeding with him requires a good grasp of your own and the enemy's power. He taught me a ton of macro play and decision making but if someone wants to pick up Mordekaiser they should focus on winning their own lane.

He's a huge lane bully when he's allowed to and really wants to snowball a lead, either through superior CS or just getting fed off the enemy. W->Q->E Max with a bruiser carry build works best. item 3116 item 3151 item 3053 item 3146 item 3135 /item 3143 /item 3065
